Those are very nice and clear pics - the best I've seen for night pics yet. Beautiful car! The gauges make me salivate............

mmmmmmm..........turbo...........

hint: T R I P O D :D

my Canon S30 allows me to set the shutter speed to whatever I want, so I set it to about 5 seconds for most of those, and just stood back and let the camera do all the work. Yay!

Mmmmm purdy. I'm curious what are you planning to do about the gauge cluster. Try to find a digital sized tach or go to analouge cluster, or just keep it as is.

those are Bosch H4 conversions (from www.pdm-racing.com) with some PIAA Xtreme White bulbs in them.

I know, some of you are thinking "RICER", but as you can see, that's pretty much the only ricey thing on my car. And in my opinion, the light they put out is MUCH whiter. I like it. :p

For now, keep it as is. It's working. Eventually I'll probably source a real JDM Silvia tach that reads the right RPM and is the right shape. But this is fine for now. :)

When you bought the Bosch H4 conversion kit, does it come with lights or did u have to buy them? So in total you spend 120 for lights? My friend suggests that I goto pepboys and get some APC headlights, but Im wondering if Im gonna need other parts. Do i need the water seals and such or can i just pop out the stock head units and pop some new diamond cut APC units in them?

It comes with regular Hella bulbs (at least Don's kit does). They work fine.

But yes, I spent about $120. Ouch, right? Oh well, it's lasted almost 2 years like that. So it was worth it.

The kit comes with everything you need. Just take out the old lights, unplug them, plug the new ones in, and bolt them back in and then aim them again. Voila.

are the dash lights supost to be that bright mine arnt and does the clock light up like that too mine doesn't

and what are you guys talking about tach

A tach, or tachometer, is the gauge that reads RPMs, revolutions per minute. His is the in the middle of the steering wheel, that reads up to 8 in increments of one. I hope thats what you were asking. :)

The lights are brighter than normal due to the way night photography works...and then I brightened it a bit more in Photoshop

The tach he mentioned is like this:

I have a 1989 240...that means I had a SOHC tach. I got a DOHC cluster (with tach) from a 91. The 91 cluster was designed for the analog gauges, not the digital ones like I have. The gauge is a bit too big for my digital trim panel. So, it doesn't fit like factory. And, the lighting behind it isn't as even as it should be.

The Silvia tach I mentioned is designed for the SR20DET and it has an indicated 7500 rpm redline, and it reads to 9000 rpm.

Any other questions? :)

Hey eric, couldnt you just swap the non-digi tach's face out for your old one? I mean use the doch tach with your original platic piece.

Well, yes, I suppose I could do that, but that tach has a 6400 rpm redline (SOHC).

I think I'm just going to not worry about it until I feel the need to buy a JDM tach ;)

128mb also. But I'm getting a 256mb for my European travels this summer. Last time I was there, I did everything with my Canon EOS Elan II SLR, but I'm going to go digital this time. So much smaller and easier. And no processing costs!

pretty spiffy, eh? yeah, it's a decent gimmick. i would never pay more for it, nor would i bother installing one, but since i have it, and it works, it's all good.

uiuc240, you from chicago?

uiuc240
03-17-2003, 11:04 AM
I already have an extra battery...that's a must have. I'll have to check into those memory cards, though...I thought the 256 was OK. In fact, I thought the 512 is OK too. I'll check online and in my owner's manual. Good catch, though. OK,I checked online at numerous sources and it all just says:

"Compatible with CF I, CF II and Microdrive" Should be fine for 256mb...

If you read my location, you'll see that I'm from Champaign (do you watch NCAA basketball?). I'll be moving to Chicago in the summer.

I'm coming up for interviews next week, and then hopefully I'll be moving up there in July or so. Where do you live anyway? City? burbs?

Eric

p.s. Looks like I need to take some more nighttime interior shots...seems like people like those.

here ya go i got a long time secret my friend showed me a long time ago (when i bought my first s13)...
H4 headlamps w/ bulbs (http://www.classicgarage.com/20h4recheadc.html)
way cheaper, and best thing you can put any bulb you want in them. but it does come with a set of bulbs ur choice. i highly reccomend.

yep. you can. just twist the dial on top to "Tv"...that stands for "Time Priority" and it allows you to select the shutter speed. I set it to about 5-10 secs for those outside shots, and 2 secs for the interior shot. Be sure to turn the flash off. The camera will meter the light and figure out the aperture setting for you. Oh, and if the aperture setting is blinking and red on the bottom of the view screen, that means you need to lengthen the time (there's not enough light to expose the shot).

Anyway, all this is in the manual. Crack it open and read it :)

CoasTek...nice call on the cheap H4 conversions. I wish more people would get these. They really are 10 times better than the lights that come stock. The beam spread is awesome, and they are so much brighter. I love driving at night with them...it used to be scary!

Couldn't agree with that statement more. Got my conversion from PDM Racing and it made a HUGE difference. Out of curiosity, do the hyper-white bulbs make that big a difference? I'm using the standard H4 bulbs that came with the set, and I wanna see if its worth it to upgrade them.

uiuc240
03-18-2003, 08:32 AM
I *personally* think the hyper white bulbs that I bought are worth the money. I made sure to get the Xtreme White ones, which have an almost-purple coating on them. They do NOT look blue, just white.

I really enjoy how pure the light is on the ground. Color renditioning is excellent. Worth the money.

However...I will not buy them again. It was a fairly frivolous purchase. If you just want good lighting, stick with nice, bright Hella bulbs. You won't regret it. If you want to spend money, spend money on over-wattage Hellas or something. 80/110 would be nice :D

Could you screw up the housings running high wattage bulbs? Since they will run hotter?

uiuc240
03-19-2003, 08:26 AM
the housings are glass and metal. they will be fine.

the thing i would be most worried about is the wiring. if you want the high-wattage bulbs, i would suggest considering rewiring with a thicker gauge.
