View Full Version : Greddy Oil Filter Relocator Nearly Destroyed My Car

After finally getting my car fixed (tranny problems), I got it out on last saturday! I installed my 3" cat, replaced my EGT probe and uppered the suspension a little (exhaust clearence issues). Then, I went for a drive.

While drive on a small road, I notice my oil light come on. I stop on the side, turn off the car and pop up the hood. One the oil filter relocator lines disconnected. Result: oil all over my engine bay, the street and a pretty ****ed SR owner. I walk to a garage, get 4 pints of oil. I put the oil line back on, put some oil in the engine and start her up. Good. No leaks. I start rolling again and the light comes on AGAIN! The damn hose came off again! Luckily for me, I still had a pint of oil.

I check the fittings and clamps. The clamps that come with the relocator wasn't tighting enough. I look around the engine bay for another clamp. Find one. Replace that one with tie-wraps and put the clamp on the relocator. Start the engine with only 1 pint of oil: no problems. I go to the garage, buy 2 more pints, put them in the car and bring it back in my garage.

Why it broke? Because the Greddy relocator is a 150$ POS. The hoses are slighty too short, the clamps not strong enough. I'm taking the whole thing off and getting longer hoses, better clamps and an oil cooler at the same time... What a day, AGAIN!

Hopefully, this is my LAST problem with the SR.

I highly recommend AGAINST getting it...

I also have some "leaking" issues on the engine bay side of the relocator... not much leaking, but enough to get me mad.

Do you mean you "highly recommend AGAIN-ST getting it? Anyway--I'm glad you stopped immediately after seeing that light come on. Good timing & good job on noticing it right away. I would hate to try to get a new SR out of Greddy if yours would have blown.

Didn't I write "against"? ;)

Yeah.. I was really lucky... You should seen the oil spill... Incredible... and my white valve cover wasn't so white anymore. :p

I can't believe Greddy would make such a cheap product. Each time the engine torques, it puts a stress on the oil lines. 2-3 inches more would've solved the problem...

Is a relocator kit even needed? I was looking at my SR and it looks like it might be a pain to get too, but I'm not sure. What do you recomend, maybe a unversal kit?

The filter is almost inaccessible from top or bottom... It's a real pita to get to. :(

yeah, first oil change I did on my SR, I about crapped myself when I didn't think I could reach the filter. Fortunately for me, I have tiny japanese hands and can just barely squeeze in there to grab it, I think oil relocators will be a must have item for most ppl, it's a PITA.

That's why I got mine... But is it worth blowing my engine for? ;)

Some people have problems with them but alot of people dont. I have yet to personally see one have a problem and have installed quite a few. Seems like there may be a few out there with quality issues and some that are/were installed incorrectly. I have one for my engine and love it. If you do get one I would check it over and when you install it be careful. The oil system is a very important part of your car! LOL From what Halo is saying it may be a good idea to go ahead and use better clamps right from the start?

How did you tighten it on the engine side?? I have a small leak there too... But not enough to consider putting a pint of oil each 60 miles. ;)

Yeah, I was so lucky... I knew I had to expect downtime, problems and debugging but I didn't expect that many when the swap went so nicely. :(
