So this is a street car, completely. Insurance, legal plates, full stereo with sub/amp, pump gas, and it'll still pretty much pass a state inspection. So yea, i did have to cut a few corners to make a few things more streetable, but its literally EXACTLY what i wanted and needed. Just a 6pt...for now.

Opinions?

And here is the rough build of it. Because im bored, and feel like posting pictures. It's not built to NHRA spec, but it will pass tech, and be qualified for any racing event i plan on ever doing, drifting, Auto-X, and Drag (i'll never be fast enough to be a better cage). It was done by a close friend of mine, he did all the welding, and the bending of main hoop at his house. I did most of the prep work that i could, grinding, clearing sound deadening, wire-wheeling prep for welding, etc... So for a home-built cage, done and finished, I am unbelievably stoked for how it turned out. I have $180 in materials including tubing, paint, 6x6 steel plates, and under body coating.

In my experience, for a street car, the gutted rear gets reeeaaally annoying after a while. My last S14 had the same set up you've got with the cage and gutted rear and it was road noise GALORE. I heard EVERY piece of gravel, every imperfection on the ground, etc. But hey if you're into it and thats what you wanted, more power to ya. Cage looks good.

Its not that bad. I left most of the sound deadening back there that i could. Im gonna try to fit the door panels back in there, but i didnt have a chance to this week, im gonna have to hack them up a bit to make it work. But yea, lil more road noise, but its not really that bad.

Why do you have a cage in a street car?

Why do you have a cage in a street car?

To do Tandem at events. This is a street car yes, but not street only car. This car sees about 3-4 big track events every year, and 10-12 small drift events every year, and many nights of street sessions. So I wanted it for safety, as well as to be qualified for Tandem competitions are drift events.

Looks good, but I would have personally just gone with a roll cage without the door bars and kept the full interior(or as much of it).

Forget what everyone says. Even if it's a street car, it's a good idea. I would have done a full 6 point if it was me.

Looks cool. You should try to put the entire interior back in.

me likes. this is what im aiming for also. a track/streetable cage setup

hmmm since you have a stock passenger seat with stock seat belts. You should have just keep the harness bar on the driver side. And do the diagonal cross the loop.
Save space and you can still throw junk in the back without having that annoying harness bar getting in the way ALL THE TIME.

03-30-2009, 07:27 AM
that's actually not autoX legal, unless you go up to prepared catagory

from the SCCA rule book stock catagory, which applies to everything up to street modified.

...roll cages be constructed according to the GCR, though they must be bolted (not welded) into the automobile and be contained within the driver/passenger compartment. A roll cage has more than four attachment points to the body or frame, or has bracing both fore and aft of the main hoop...

Side bars look a little low. Look like they will break your arm and rib cage rather then protect you. Picks with you in the drivers seat on the drivers side?

What thickness is the tubing?

BlackZenkiS14
03-30-2009, 07:58 AM
1.75" .095 wall thickness.

I didnt do the main hoop diagonal because i wanted to be able to get tires into the rear of the car. The passenger is going to get a Bride Brix and harness eventually, im picking my takata harness for drivers side in a few weeks.

The door bars are a bit lower than what i would have liked as well, but in order to keep the door panels, and to keep it from being a pain in the ass to get in and out of, seeing as i drive this car like 4 or 5 days a week, i had to put them a bit lower.

Like i said, i had to make sacrifices in a few places to keep the streetability of it.

Cro-Moly right?

You want the upper part of the door bar high so you take the side impact in the shoulder not the ribs. You can put a butt bend lower down on the bar about were your knees are when you sit. The upper point should be shoulder height and the same height as the cross bar. Your biggest issue with a visual is that the mounting points are not at the same height.

I would completely remove the passenger bar or put in a bolt in if you are going to take people for rides at the track.

My only bitch is that the door bars look pretty high up. As long as they don't bother YOUR arms, then it is A-OK with me.

Nice street setup!

Only thing I have to say is that there's no diagonal :( I know you wanted room for tires...

BTW your kouki looks awesome with those wheels =]

Yes sir. Thats teh reason i got this cage done.

And S14BD, thanks for the input. But i was/am fully aware of the door bars not being exactly to spec for some sanctioning bodies, but like i said, i built it this way on purpose, becaue it was exactly what i wanted/needed. And besides, Door bars are easy to remove and redo if i ever wanted to.

looks great man, i'd have done the back half different personally, have you ever seen the kirk racing roll bar? i just bought one because i love the design, you keep rear seats, and interior panels, but still have 2 rear bars and diagonal bar. here's mine.

http://i230.photobucket.com/albums/ee309/ineednewtires/car%20parts/PICT0012.jpg

I'm going to add door bars but different than yours, either going to put them lower, or higher with a kink in em. Looks great though VERY nice for DIY cage. Were you able to paint the outsides of the cage or can you see un-painted roll bar in the rear windows? Prolly shoulda painted that part before installing, weld in, then paint the rest. Great job though man

Pipe bender is sorta home made, but ended up costing 500 finished

Nice street setup!

Haha, the white wheels took a while to grow on me, but i like it too now. Thank you.

And like I said, i wanted to do a diagonal too, but because i wanted to be able to get tires to the track, i had to leave it out for now.

Looks good. but damn 10-12 drift events a year on a street car?! Man I hope you have another DD. I couldn't do that after 2 years of DD my car.
Lol yea, i have a civic EG6 Si hatch for a daily. I daily drove the 240 with doing the events for 3 years though.

nice cage but..... haha i would have left the door bars off.....

But if that is what you want then to hell with it.....

Had to have door bars for tandem events.

And no they dont get in the way of my elbows, my elbows rest perfecly on the door armrest.

I couldn't do that after 2 years of DD my car.he has a gay little civic and honestly the cage only cost him maybe $200 all together. it may not be legal, but its a whole lot safer than a 240 with out a cage. my dad backed into mine and sent the b pillar 2inches in

+1 for DIY cage, looks good and with having a sunroof!

lol I have more into it than that. I paid Omar for the work. Not as much as he deserves, or as much as it would cost anyone else. But I did in fact pay Omar for his hard work. lol I have 180 in materials though :D

People door bars are to protect you during tandem.

He's obviously wanting to tandem.

Its for your safety. Why can't people understand that?

Street car wise you should never have a cage, but you didn't do the front loop and so I guess its somewhat okay.
