This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.

VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.

Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.

Who the fuck leaves the lights on anyways? Turning off the 1 13w CFL I have on for an hour is going to do so much...

But, I do have friends that have 3-4x the energy usage that I have in a smaller place. Need to get people to turn shit off and change to more efficient stuff like CFL's then turn off the wasteful shit for 1 hour a year. Reduce daily consumption rather then some token measure.

Seems more like a publicity stunt then anything. I expected more from WWF.

haha, Is it only your lights? Or is it like ALL of your power?

EDIT: and turning off your light is a vote.

If I am home at 8:30 on a Sat night it means I am cooking food. Fuck turning off the lights while cooking. That's dangerous. LOL

I happened to be driving near downtown LA last night at 8:30.

It was pretty weird / cool. Even Staples was dark.

this is a joke. people with hummers in their garage turning their lights off, or corporations that cut down rain forests and exploit animals pretending like they care

Vegas looked crazy last night. You couldn't even see the strip from anywhere in town. It was just dark, and looked like it was never there.

I wanted to go down to the strip and film the lights going on and off, but the crowd down there was ridiculous.

That's weird that staples center shut down for an hour, and then had those skylights and the whole shebang going at full blast at 1am.

Anybody think there is too much purple/and blue lighting from the whole LA live/staples area?

Totally forgot about this.

I was at a party and there was just a bunch of strobe lights and naked chicks.

+1

This isn't about making a huge difference in the world, it's about raising awareness for saving energy and climate change.

I didn't do it because I forgot. But I recycle, use florescents, turn stuff off after I use it, etc. You know all that impossible shit that takes up a lot of my time. Sure does make me less bitter though.

Look at how many legitimate sources out there are saying that this is actually happening, compare them to the ones that say it isn't.

The earth is changing faster than it has ever changed, and we are causing a significant portion of the change. Nobody is really sure how the changes are going to be effecting us, but its probably going to be huge, and soon.

Personally, global warming is nowhere near my main list of concerns. However, at the same time, I admire people with noble intentions.

I thought this was a neat thing, especially since it was worldwide, and it kind of brought people together. Thumbs up to whoever participated.

All that being said, I did not participate. I did not really care to, nor do I consider myself a terrible energy waster. Of course I could conserve more, but I don't leave water running, I turn off lights if no one is in the room, and I don't leave any appliances on unnecessarily, other than my PC. I conserve where I can, as long as it doesn't affect me living comfortably. And to be perfectly honest, I mainly do it for monetary reasons.

Earth Hour was a call out to people to think about their behavior. I know plenty of people who leave all the lights in and around their house turned on, tv's on in every room, and who water their lawn every morning. Hopefully they will take something away from this, although I doubt it, and only the people who already do conserve will try to conserve more, haha.

No one had to participate. I didn't and I can care less who did, but if anyone seriously turned on all their lights just out of spite, that is childish.

this shit is stupid, people want to make a difference but do not want to go to the extremes required to consciously change
