i think its finally time for me to purchase some headphones.
i know i can just walk into a store and purchase some, but i want to see what everyone else uses to listen to music.
I'm going on a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnng airplane ride and i need some comfy earphones. Anything is better than the stock ipod ones so yeah.
What do you guys use to listen to whatever you listen to?
There are some sony earphones that i had before and i gave away to a friend for his birthday. dont know if i should just buy em again at Target for $30 bucks or put my money into something better than these sony ones.

As has been said, the V150 is the best bang for the buck, I only had to buy another pair because I got intoxicated one night and they found themselves on my floor, where I would fuck around and step on them causing irreparable damage. This was 2003, and I have had the new ones ever since without issue.
I have had my V600s for about the same amount of time without issue, and I really don't even care about the little ones, as they're only 8 bucks and likely to get fucked up with me sweating into them working out anyway.

I actually really like the iPod headphones. I've never used another pair (in ear) this comfortable. Usually my ears would start killing me after a few mins. The sound is not as loud as I'd like but I can live with that. I guess it all depends on the person's ear though.
I do want some Bose ones but I'm not sure if I'm ready to drop $100 on headphones...

See, the only time I use my iPod is when I am working out, cooking or doing yardwork, so I am more than likely doing a lot of moving and at least some sweating, the iPod phones won't stay in my ear, so they're in the desk drawer, I always use the Sonys.

I'm a bit of a headphone nut.
At home, for listening, I use Grado SR325 cans with a Musical Fidelity X-can V2 tube headphone amplifier. (pictures are from intarwebs, not my own):
http://echohifi.com/images/product/197-large.jpg
http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/image.php?image=710085&is_user=0
I have original SR325's, which are now discontinued. The photo is of SR325i's, which is the new replacement. Mine are all black. I couldn't find a good, big photo of an original set of SR325. My whole rig, including cabling, cost me less than $500, as I got the amp used from the audiogon classifieds.
I've always wanted to listen to this setup, which is the Sennheiser "Orpheus". I don't think it's for sale anymore, but when it was (few years back), it retailed for like $11,500. The sound is apparently comparable to many super expensive (i.e. $100k+) speaker systems (Goldmund Reference, Wilson Audio X1 Grand Slamm, etc):
http://pds12.egloos.com/pds/200901/09/11/d0008611_496748e3a016d.jpg
Headphones are the best way to get super high-end sound for less than high end money. My SR325 setup with the external amp sounds unbelievable, much better than my B&W DM603's in my home rig. High-end cans can lack the imaging of very nice speakers, but the level of fidelity and audio quality is that of much nicer gear. I could never afford speakers/amps that would sound as good as my $500 headphone setup.
Most of what I listen to on the SR325 setup is from analog source (i.e. primarily vinyl), hence the tube amplifier instead of solid-state.
I don't listen to much portable music. I use el-cheapo Sony earbuds for my PSP, etc.

I use my iPod maybe like 11-13 hrs a day. but probably only like 3-4 of those hrs I use my headphones. It's an hour commute on the train to work and an hour back. I also use them at the gym for an hour. They cooperate well with my ears but everybody is different.
So OP, you really just have to keep trying new ones until you find some you like...

I had a pair of these for about 4 years. Worked perfectly, DURABLE and exelent sound for on the go music. I ride bikes a SHIT TON so I needed something that would work and not fall off. They finally took a crap and I bought another pair from best buy, different model. I returned those and got these ones again (special order, took like 2 weeks) and it was totally worth it.

i use three different sets, all sony. for working out, i have a pair of those cheap, like, bud-on-a-headband "sport style" ones. i can't find a pic.
when i use the riding mower, i wear MDR-V150's, as many have listed here. i've owned two pairs of V150's and probably three pairs of V100's before that. they wind up getting replaced when i inevitably tear the earcups. i think the v100's were slightly better quality, but i don't use these with my home stereo anymore and they drown out the lawnmower, so whatever.

Trick is to not buy the from them. They seem to put the MSRP high on their store so it will get you to buy from a dealer.
I liked the Sony headphones for a long time until a girl I knew started raving about the Skullcandy's. I was skeptical about the name till I tried them. Can't beat the bass at half power. Full power will destroy your ears, But nice for listening around your neck or on the table.

Grado SR60s still rockin' after 4 years, best headphones under $100.
^^
This is absolutely true.
The SR60's are probably the best headphones in the world for use out of a normal headphone jack. They can sometimes suck for portable use because they're open dynamic and so everyone around you can hear whatever you're listening to, but you can't argue with the sound.
SR80 and above sound murky without a separate headphone amplifier. My SR325's sound like garbage out of a normal headphone jack, it just can't drive them very well.
Do these Skullcandy cans actually sound decent? I'd be willing to try out a set of earbuds.
Anyway, this is the best place to buy headphone gear:

To the op... dude, so many variables.
What kind of music do you listen to? What kind of quality are you looking for? Definitely think about how long you'll be using them for... how long is your trip?
There's circumaural, supra-aural, earphones, canalphones, open, closed... lol
Noise cancelling is nice for the airplane, but with active cancelling, the algorithm can mess with the audio quality. Passive, it's pretty much like an ear plug (which I personally like, but then you get microphonics).
Check out head-fi.org, good resource for reviews and recommendations, and pretty newb friendly.

Denon
There's more, but I'm drawing a blank.

Sennheiser

Just a got a pair of these over these denon ahd-5000's over weekend
bass seems a bit over-powering & needs an amp to sound decent.
biggest annoyance is that it picks up a lot of phone signal interference from my i-phone mp3 player.
might have to buy a dedicated mp3 player to work with it (leaning on the zune 120).
sounds pretty good otherwise.
I get the impression i hear a lot more details over my previous mediocre Altec canal heaphones;
great for watching movies on my computer too.
initially intended to buy it for something to use on the plane, work & portable use,
but its prob better suited to listening at home.
can anyone suggest a good amp?

My Skullcandy Full Metal Jacket earphones are pretty nice. I've gone through a shit ton of earphones, they get abused pretty bad, but the FMJ's hold up pretty well. I'm use to having my earphones rip apart when I drop my ipod or blackberry, not with these though.
The sound quality isn't bad either. I'm not expecting amazing quality from earphones, you can only get so much from a speaker so big.
Awesome warranty on them too.

Etymotics ER-6 for budget, ER-4S for baller... got a sweet deal on both sets like 5 yrs ago.
Looks like they got a new one out (HF-5), also $150 but better than the ER-6's... might have to try em out.
Noise isolator headphones are great because instead of turning up the volume on the headphones to hear the nuances of your music, you just tone everything else down - much better on your hearing, especially because most headphones are loudest in our 'most sensitive' frequency range.
I ride my motorcycle with the ER-6's, and don't have any problem hearing other cars/emergency vehicles/etc, plus it kills the wind noise, and I get to dance/pop&lock on the freeway when I'm bored! Win/win/win in my book.

Heh, my friend is a member of that site. He listened to my FMJ's and said it wasn't as bad as it is made out to be on that site. Only complaint he said was that there was just too much bass (might be good for some people). Hell I can't complain about them, I got them as a gift.
It's funny cuz he had a set of Shure's 210 or 310, can't remember, no doubt they sounded phenomenal, but one day he was boarding and he ended up ripping them apart and Shure didn't cover it through warranty because it was abused. He was pretty butthurt about that, I don't think he's ever bought I high-end earphone (mid-end for head-fi users) ever since, LOL.
But yeah head-fi isn't so friendly with the mainstream brand headphones such as Sony, Bose and mainly Skullcandy due to their "trendy" designs.
I doubt the majority of zilvian's cater to the high-end brands of head/earphones that head-fi does. Not only that, but form over function is pretty popular here too...

i think it's pretty difficult to test headphones.
can't really know for sure unless you test something first hand.
even then, it's subject to source variables
if I can't test a given headphone in person,
I'll at least try to read as many reviews (layman, forums, & articles) as possible and look for patterns.
As for 'high-end', i'm more inclined to believe that you don't necessarily need to have high end equipment to have enjoyable headphones.
It does pay off however, to do as much research as possible & find something that fits your criterion.
I've tried $30-ish Senn PX-100's & $100 Denon 1001's before, without any amp, and I was totally happy with them.
Better to spend that $30 on Senn PX-100 than say Apple i-pod replacement earplugs.
There are also some pretty darned economical heaphone amps out there that work decent.
Never tried Skullcandy myself.
I've always been a bit turned off with the flashy designs,
but I'll try to borrow/steal a friend's set and check them out

im on my 2nd pair of jvc gummys.. they are cheap, and having my zune in my pocket, usually throwing the earphones around, keeping a low volume while im at work *in a office*, so they do fine. The first pair only lasted a few weeks tho til the wiring connection must have got weak at the plug since one earphone cut out.

kinda OT, but how's the zune working out for you?
any prior exp with the i-pod/i-phone for comparison's sake.
thinking about getting a 120gig version myself.
can they play WAV files?
I'm also looking into a set of more affordable headphones where I can use in the office
(or any other situation where the sound doesn't leak out and bother ppl).
im leaning towards the Audio Technica M50's
think you can get them on ebay for $110 shipped.

i had a 3rd gen 15gb ipod a few years ago
one of these
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/30/Ipod_backlight.jpg
back than, quality was great/awesome.. software sucked using itunes back than. and i had some problems with win xp and that thing.. im sure the new ones are better overal. That 3rd gen died on me, the screen went out. Itunes on windows= sucked back than, i dunno what its like now. I had used some third party software to sync songs onto it.
2 years ago bought a 30gb zune *the OG*.. awesome.. again software sucked since it lacked.. zunes have their fair share of problems but i suppose all mp3 players do, and if your not having problems, you probably dont use it as much imo. im on my 3rd replacement from microsoft due to problems with it *i think i forgot what hte problems where* but my current one has been great for a year. It originally didnt have games or accessible wifi song purchases, but they added those features to the older ones so it really makes this older model still a great player. Ive put a higher capacity battery in mine, thinking about installing a 80gb hdd in it but i dont think i have that much music to really demand the extra storage *and i got tons of music, you gotta be a file junky or just stupidly large song files to need more imo*.
But there are times when i wish i would have gone with the ipod... but most of the people i know who swear by ipods, tend to have apple computers, so probably really no software issues..
only thing i hate about my zune is sometimes it can feel bulky/huge, esp if like to throw it in your pocket sometimes and if you have loose fitting pants etc.
oh and theres more ipod support out there for stereo car headunits, home recievers etc.
Ipods pretty much own the market in my opinion.

Really does come down to preference in terms of highs and lows. Sony, JVC, Denon... hell Shures are pretty mainstream now, as with Audio Technica, AKG, Beyer. They sell Shures in those ipod vending machines, so I think that's as mainstream as it gets.
As far as price, they bust a nut over some cheap ass KOSS headphones. I've read good things about JVC Marshmallow, which are supposed to be really comfortable, and they cost like 10-20 bucks.
There's so many choices, it's nuts! I'm more of a canal phone guy myself (I like the sound isolation and privacy). Active noise cancellation is nice, but you lose some of the frequencies in the music.
Form over function? Grados look like shit to me, but they're more for the retro peeps anyway. You should see some of the hack shit mods they do over there... surprisingly very effective, much like the stuff you find on Zilvia LOL
Wait till you start getting into custom molds like those hearing aids. Your wallet will love you :P

Not bad for under $120 shipped, and they sound decent without an amp.

Sound insulation and leakage are great.
I can use them almost anywhere without worrying.
Bass is a bit more pronounced than I would like,
but so are my main cans (denon 5000's).
comfort is great.
They are light, fit well, and the earpad vinly/leather isn't irritable.
I can listen to them for 5 hrs straight without discomfort.

I currently have the 7506. I would say after an extended period of time, my ears get sore wear them. But I mainly use the headphones for djing, so its not like I would be having them on constantly. But it would be nice to have headphones that can be used for listening pleasure as well. The padding isn't thick enough and doesn't provide enough sound isolation as well as I wish. They are a bit on the heavy side as well. They do sound good but I need more low frequencies.

i can't think of anything in the $50 range, but if you want a good pair of cheap over ears, get some MDR-V150's. i think there's at least a couple recs for them in this thread, and i've personally gone through around 4 or 5 pairs since i was 13 or so. i use them when i mow the lawn, sometimes when i'm biking, etc.... they don't need a lot of power to push them, they sound good off a PC headphone jack or ipod.
they retail for 20, and you can probably find them for less. if i were you i'd pick these up and then save up a hundred or so for something nice.

they're comfortable over-ear headphones and they're pretty nice compared to any other pair of 20 dollar headphones. i didn't say they were the best thing since sliced fixies, i said they were decent for the price.
