View Full Version : Coilovers with stock (or slighly higher) spring rates?

Are they available? Or are springs w/stock spring rates available that can be put on the commonly available coilovers that are out there?

The reason I ask is because I want ride height adjustability without loss of suspension travel but with a stock like ride (or slightly stiffer, I now have GR2's w/Eibach Prokits and the ride is acceptable for me). I'm not concerned with improving the handling much, it handled just fine for me w/stock parts!

Or, should I be looking into Ground Control parts to make something like this?

Thanks,
Fred

Coilovers don't get their stiffness only in part of the springs.

A lot has to do with the valving inside the coilover on the pistons.

Id recommend KYB AGXs for you.

Buy some blown coilovers and order some 4k springs.
Low and comfortable, your car will just bounce like its on a trampoline.

the lower your car goes, the less your suspension travel.

did you snooze in physics class?

get some flex's or flta1s or flt FAS's

If you've got like 1800 to play with you can do a custom koni coilover set up that will ride 1000 times better then any coilover out there AND outperform any coilover out there.

eibach, swift, hypercoil etc. will sell you a spring with any spring rate + physical dimension you want. but this isn't going to work well if your goal is to go fairly low.

you won't be able to go too low with stock spring rates, even on a dual adjustable coilover set up. even if you use shock length to go low so you retain shock travel, your overall travel will be limited because the spring is so soft... your tire will hit chassis, especially in the front.

there are options available with much stiffer spring rates that ride comparatively comfortably to stock. i would say go that route instead, whether you get integrated or piece together a koni/gc/etc setup.

Tein Flex...spring rate on them is softer than most mainstream coilovers out there...

Ok, thanks for the input guys. I think Tein Flex is my best bet then but the cost isway more than I want to throw down right now, looks like around 1400-1500$ for them.

On the subject of Ground Control, is it possible to put together a decent setup much cheaper by using a different brand of shocks then Koni's (I'm sure they are worth it if I had the cash)? I have a set of AGX's too that aren't being used, are they compatible some how with the GC stuff?

Thanks,
Fred

you can put GC's on any shock, pretty much. AGX would be fine.

Not entirely Mr. Myavataristhekanjifortouge

For rougly ~1K you can get a custom set up from Bilstein, however spring rate means nothing. Almost all off the shelf coilover sets ups are poorly valved which is why they feel so stiff.

A properly valved coilover set up won't feel stiff at all. For example my Spoon N1's with 18/16 springs on them and my friend's custom valved Zeal Function 6's with 24/20 springs on them. You don't even notice the rates, the car feels nuetral and absorbs bumps like a champ.

Hahaha at the avatar part. :bowrofl:

When I was saying "any coilover out there" I meant out of the box typical stuff. My bilsteins are finally done being valved - which I will say the set up is costing a bit more then 1k as I paid someone to calculate the proper shock valving for my car (based off of corner weights and a few other measurements). My spring rates will be 500lbs up front and 400lbs out back - so like 9k/7k - and they should definitely ride much better then my 7k/5k set up on my JICs right now.

I also was just recommending him to the Koni/GC set up rather then recommending he use doo-doo spring rates.

Endura-Techs should give a comfortable ride as well.

There were some ohlins on upgarage for 1k that were in amazing condition, which I'm sure is rare, but I never go on that site since I can't understand it anyways. Look for something like that and you won't be disappointed. My front springs are 525lbs and it rides better than my stock setup
