how old is your car and how long have you been using synthetic? oil doesn't add any performance, its just wear and tear. so, if you've been using synthetic for the life of the car, keep using it. otherwise, go back to regular oil.

no, thicker oil is like for better gas milage and thinner oil is for more performance... run the track with 10w 30, then with 5w 20.... it will be a difference...

think of it like this... the thicker the oil... more friction... takes longer to get parts moving faster... the thinner the oil the less friction it has... and what im asking it... does anyone know whats the thinnest to go on a KA without hurting the motor

synth oil is an upgrade all around
the fact that it has smaller particles doesnt mean its thinner and protects worse, it means it lubricates the metal better
and it doesnt have the coarse particles like the mineral based ones
synthetic oil is the way to go all around, except if your poor or you have a leak, because the smaller particles leak out easier, and they cost about 5 bux a pop ... so yea, spensive stuff...
Oil does add performance...it was tested and dyno'ed..like 3-5 hp increase...i'd read it sumwhere on the web..they were using Amsoil Synthetic Oil....you can search the web and read about it..i personally use Amsoil and it is by my opinion the best Synthetic oil....it is a little costly but thats okay though...

I think me and Vancouver will agree on this: you really aren't getting crap if you've or someone else has been using regular oil for a number of years and you suddenly decided to use synthetic. Your engine components are already coated in mineral oil and they will stay so. Unless you take it apart, have someone do port and polish and whatever and whatnot, and then you start using synthetic, you're wasting your money. Not sure if anything can go wrong.
I would also really like to know what is the best oil grade for my car. Nissan dealer uses 5-W-30, I'm not sure I liked that too much. I was gonna bring them 10-W-40 next time I change my oil, but now I'm not so sure about it. So what is the best oil?

hey s13grl and i finally agree on something. lol.
in addition to what she said, as cars get older, they tend to have head gasket problems. a thin synthetic oil is the worst thing for this problem cause the tiny leaks become huge with thin oil.
you're risking engine damage for no performance gain? don't you think everyone would run synthetic if you even get 1 hp? ppl pay $500 for headers that give you 5 hp. why, when you could just pay $20 for oil?

Finally,. I think I'd probably physically attack you if we were to be in a walking distance from each other. Maybe... maybe not . (Maybe I'd just slash your tires.)
Mobil 1 10w30
Amsoil 10w30
Amsoil is best but a bit pricey.

i'd rather you hit me than slash my tires...

You're on!
BTW Thanks for the info on the oil people, I'm sure we'll all be using the same stuff from now on. Or at least most of us...

The previous owner used 20w-50...so that's what I've been putting in it. I don't know why they used such a heavy oil when the manual says 10w-30. I want to change to 10w-30, but someone told me it's not good to change weights...there any truth to that? I don't see how it could be detrimental, but I don't want to take a chance.
i forgot what it's called but there is a fluid you pour into your crankcase and it cleans out your engine so you can use a diffrent wieght oil or if ur switchin to synthetic...never tried it...but just lettin you know..

CDW or something like that. It's oil detergent, kind of. Cleans internals and quiets valves. I've bought one but haven't used it yet.
