View Full Version : s14 Color Change
Hi, I currently own a 1995 s14 ruby red pearl (85k on chassis). The basecoat of the car is red so I have a red engine bay, trunk etc. I would like to paint the car white someday soon and would like to get a realistic timeframe on painting the engine bay.
Is 3 days a realistic amount of time to pull the entire engine & components, prep, paint & reinstall all engine components?

Not unless you plan on doing a rattle can job. Assuming you have very little body work to do as far as dings, etc..you may be looking at 4-5 days doing it alone. Just my opinion. Goodluck either way.

Is your paint in horrible condition or something?
Just painting the engine bay flat black.
The engine bay will not need any major bodywork, just some sanding/grinding in the battery tray. I would like to know if 3 days for entire pull of engine, paint, then re-install of engine is sufficient time.

For an engine bay alone?
Most likely. I'd say 90% sure you can pull it off easily in 3 days.
Pulling a motor/tranny out isn't very time consuming if you know what you're doing and have all necessary tools at hand.

Sell/Trade your car for a Pearl one.
Hopefully I'm gonna get to 2 tone my car in a month or two. Ruby pearl on bottom, Champagne Gold on top.

If you want the paint job to come out looking good then it all going to depend on how much time and prep you put into it. The better the prep is the better the paint will look.

Just put vasaline on the stuff you dont want painted and spray away. Let the paint dry then powerwash the vasaline off. No need to take the engine out. Thats how GM does it anyway.

You realize that paint supply shops sell washable spray masks.
Much better solution than vaseline, unless you feel like jerking off afterwards.

3 days is not realistic. Give yourself like 4-5 weeks. Maybe 6.

Seriously I think at this rate I could dismantle the upper half of the engine in 6 hours and yank that bitch out clean by midnight. I've pulled two engines out in a weekend.
And surprisingly didn't have left over bolts LOL!

For sure. I pulled my ka, and had my bay degreased, sanded, and some rust fixed in 2 days...then primered it, painted it. Put a sr in..total of 4 days.

3 day might be pushing it but its possilble with enough beer, pizza and friends...

You know what sucks, how expensivee the OEM White Pearl paint and related supplies is. Especially when you know bumpers, etc. is going to get mangled
