depends on what type of photos you want to take. for a long time canon has been known for their action shots and nikon for portraits. i personally have a d60 with the same package that you are looking at. i have used it at the racetrack and for doing photoshoots on some cars. i love it! i have used a canon xsi. but never owned one. i prefer the nikon over the canon. but thats just me. the nikon is very user friendly. ive owned the camera for about a year and now i fully understand my cameras features and how to work it without ever reading my manual once. do some research and find some opinions of professional photographers.
Go with the Canon. Better lens selection IMO.
I would just buy the one lens kit tho. Get a better lens later, when you know exactly what you're looking for.

Either camera is fine. There is no better camera company(Nikon, Cannon, Pentax, Olympus...). You should go to a camera store and check out both cameras. See which camera has a better feel. You should also do research on camera specific forums because they help a lot. You can't go wrong with either camera. Figure out which system you like working with better. You may consider one system to be more user friendly than the other. My friend just got a D60, and I was helping him learn some of the functions. It was the first time i ever used a Nikon, and it was really easy to use.
Have fun choosing ;)

Sony is starting to become pretty big in photography. The Sony a700 kicks ass but the lens selection is awful

Get the XS with just the kit lens (18-55) like JVD said.
Shoot pictures. Get better.
Buy a good lens.
Also, you should buy a premie membership and read the photo thread. Over 90 pages and 2 years worth of posts in there.
Neither of them are really bad, but I kinda prefer how the Canon jpegs looks. I wouldn't get those 2 lens kits either. I would rather get a 1 lens kit and then get a decent 50mm prime lens. A prime will take great photos on the relatively cheap.

true but the person holding the camera has a lot to do with the pic quality too.
chances are the kit lens is going to be more than enough for him to learn on for the first few months or whatever till he gets good enough to warrant a lens upgrade.
and if you're just shooting jpeg anyways, you should be using a regular point and shoot. no use wasting your money on an slr.

I have had my Canon XTi for 1.5 years now. I am sort of looking for a new lense. My roomate has a d40 and I have taken it out and used it, I don't like it at all.
Buy the one that YOU like. Don't spend extra $$ on a lense, get a good case, lense protector, tripod, and take a class or 2 on how to use it and what everything is.

thank you for your opinion...i got the d60 today went to check out my cousin rebel xti and then i went to check out my friends d90, i really liked the d90 and wish i had the money for it but its O.k because they told me that since i am new at this, it doesn't matter if i got a higher model, i wouldn't use it to the full potential, so its better to get an introduction camera before moving on the advance. so thank you zilvian hopefully when i get my car done and go to the meet, i'm going be taking picture and posting on zilvia

You've obviously never used a Canon DSLR at high ISO then.
