So I got my car back with the brand new swap today. I'm driving normally :2f2f:and I get pulled over in Irvine.... go figure... Any how he pulled me over and popped my hood. He wrote me down for modified exhaust and warning for "smog device" *whew* no ref ticket. He told me if I were to contest the ticket in court he would get me for the "smog device" He saw my fmic and headers/prob turbo too but it was under the headers and harder to see, didn't sayin anything about the SR either.:eek3:

Question now should I just pay the exhaust ticket so I don't risk having to go to the ref?

Also since he gave me a warning for not having smog (carb) legal parts will that show up on my record, the next time I get pulled over for something stupid like a tail light? Prompting the next cop to pop my hood as well?

I have a 3 "BRM exhaust with a 21" header, its a bit loud, anyone have suggestions for anything quieter?

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

just pay the ticket.. its cheap anyways..

sell your exhaust and put in a e-cutout with stock exhaust..

you will never get pulled over again for exhaust..

simple as can be!

Yea quit supporting a stupid state which does nothing to support its hard working tax paying citizens and doesnt even care how many illegals make it across because the state profits of them as well.

A stupid state? Isn't the air quality shitty there? hence the reasons for those laws there, not that the '90's boom of street racing in cali didn't make it any better. Bringing illegals into an automobile matter? There is some hateful people here. TO BE ON TOPIC, pay the ticket as nismoknights said. If you go to the ref you screwed.

Why'd you get an sr in the 1st place if you live in cali?

insanemaniac
03-22-2009, 12:08 PM
probably just going to pay it since its not a ref ticket, but ya think
theres any way to make the BRM 3" even quieter? Welding an additional resonator/muffler can in the middle of the exhaust piping like the one in the stock exhaust or the RSR one?

i say instead of going trying to get a softer exhaust. just put a dump off the turbo and hope that as you roll by a cop you deafen him enough so that u can get away.

Why don't you people in Cali just hide your hood latch so cops stop popping your hoods? Duh! its on a cable you can stick it anywhere why leave it in such a obvious OEM spot when your car is not OEM lol

they better have a good reason to tow your car, because last i checked thats illegal. they told you that because you're 20. when you're a grown man and they tell you "were going to tow your car because we cant pop your hood and have reason to suspect you have a modified car" they had better, and i mean BETTER 100% have something that will hold up in court.

seriously, some cops take things too far - but at the same time there are a lot of younger individuals who not only do they not know their rights, but they compound the problem by doing a bunch of stupid shit to their cars.

like daily driving an illigal engine.. here we are bitching about stupid honda drivers that race on the freeway, but then, we have fellow members that daily drive an illegal engine. ye know? its legal on the track, so keep it in the track...

So what would happen if I were to drive down through Cali to visit family. Coming from Washington? Would I have to pop my hood and get checked or does the rules not apply to people outts state. Couple of friends said they crused down last summer and past numorous cops, but they did nothing?

topic is about cali residents... as stated in other posts, cali cops cant do anything about modified exhaust, and illegal engines if you are from out of state.. but, speeding is ofcourse enforcable..

WOW you are a real douchebag. Sorry dude, but cali is the place to be for cars and that will never change. Look at the bright side, at least you have good gambling in nevada.

Ya that's a great idea, piss the cop off. That usually works out quite well.

Are you under the impression that we have to pop our hood for every passing cop or something? You only have to pop your hood if you are doing something stupid and get pulled over by a cop that feels like being a douchebag. The majority of us never have to pop our hood and rarely get hassled for exhaust. It is really only certain areas of so-cal that have problems with cops like that.

No. no. I was just asking if there happen to be a douchebag cop and he was to pull me over. If I were be forced to follow the same rules, such as visual inspection of the car, SR, exhaust..blah blah blah. Just asking if my car had a possibility to get towed as well. But it doesnt, as someone has already stated. And i dont plan on coming down and being an asshat while driving, not my style.

Sorry to ask/thanks

^You could run an open header out of your hood, shooting flames throughout the state. They might hassle you, but they can't ticket you for California vehicle code infractions since you aren't a California resident.

A 21 inch header? Veeeeery interesting...

did he ask or did he tell you to pop your hood? Most of the time it is a consentual encounter which is why he would "ask' you to pop your hood. That means you can NICELY decline. Of course if you decline they will hit you with the usual "I can tow your car and store it for 30 days". If he does, most of the time it's bull because that would require a lot of paperwork. He also has to be able to justify a "search" of your vehicle, and a modified or "illegal" exhaust does not mean he can "search" your vehicle. Keep in mind that there are certain reasons as for an officer to search your vehicle but I'm assuming that everything else is legit, no guns, drugs, or alcohol. Besides, what do you think the judge will say when he has to hear about your car getting impounded and the time being wasted by both the state and the officer all for an "illegal exhaust".

We all know the consequences of an SR in Cali, so when it happens then you have no choice but to pay your fines and move on.

Wow, so glad Im not in cali for that kinda BS!! Last time I got pulled over an asked about my car by a cop asking if it was turbo etc.. I said yes, then proceeded to get asked to pop the hood which i did.. there was about 5 officers on scene an they all gave me comps on how nice of an engine bay it was.... mind you I get get yelled at for haing my plate in the windshield and my rear tires being below wear bars.. but jus said I was coming back fromt he raceway which is down the rd.. which I was and I had the whole rear hatch full of spent rubber..

Mind you we do have a few douch bag cops around here.. tried telling my buddy his GTR was 2 low AN 2 LOUD........ and my buddy just laughed at him.. since his car is stock height almost ( just a set of olins coils) an a full 4" Ti exhaust.. but fuck really are RBs loud.. umm no..

Thats my rant ish thing.. lol

lol.. also my INs. company is giving me a break on my rates cuz I installed a smaller engine 2L instead of 2.4L lol

I'd LOVE to move to Ohio and drive my potato fueled SR to go find that ONE ferrari, that would be so fun.

All I can tell you for running an SR in California is to be very low key about everything you do... I've slowed down so much after I got my exhaust...
I'm not trying to say you're lying, but I think you were going faster than you should have, because I've never been pulled over for my exhaust other than the time I was going like 85MPH on the 710 to the 105, other than that... Oh, and the other time I was going too fast down a main street and cop pulled me over telling me to slow down, he could give me two tickets for speeding and having a loud exhaust and that he's got bigger fish to fry... Or you were +5K RPM in 1st or 2nd.

lmao, that's you?:wavey:

to be quiet honest, it's wayyy different from when you say it, loud exhaust, suspension, front mount, I don't have your SE wheels anymore, sold'em to a friend.

I think the smartest thing to do is paint your FMIC... get one of these (http://www.frsport.com/Apexi-APEX-i-155-A023-ECV-Exhaust-Control-Valve-Silencer-80mm_p_9083.html), body kits can be a giveaway... I'm not getting one.

Don't put an SR20DET sticker on your car, don't put a 'fuck the law' sticker on your car, and drive like a normal person when you're on the road, if you need an outlet for racing... Go to the track, Irwindale, Pomona, Fontana for Drag, and Willow Springs or something for Drift/Grip, if you think it's too much to pay for a track day think about how much you'll pay for a speeding ticket...

Oh, and... depending on the speed your going, you may not have a car to actually drive to any track events... and you may be in jail... and you may have a point on your record... (Exhibition of Speed)

having to talk about this subject on a public forum is not a smart idea.
it's not like cops are so dumb they can't read or get on the internet.
less people know about it the less the word would spread and making the car more "poopoo" magnet.
good luck,

I actually was going a bit slow... on culver, spd lmt is 50 and I was doing bout 40-45 ish trying to keep my revs low and using the higher gears... unfortunately the awesome BRM rumble at low revs got his attention the wrong way :-/.

On that note, i've noticed that the low rpm "rumble" sounds louder below 3500 rpm then when its around 4-5k rpms...hrmmm so I guess that 21 in. resonator does its job... now I just have to find a quieter muffler.... any suggestions? Its a magnaflow right now...

I've seen some extremely rare (not to mention expensive) cars up here, worked on a good number of exotics, and it's kinda shortsighted to think that cali's gonna be the only place with omgkewlcars.

Get a quieter exhaust and pay the fix it ticket or don't change the exhaust and pay the fine. My friend got one of these tickets recently too. She changed out her exhaust and showed up to the CHP department, and the person there just stood at the door way and asked her to turn on her car. Then the CHP officer just signed off the ticket. She had a HKS Ti Muffler with a resonator.

Yeah, it's a joke, I could've passed my fix-it ticket test if I just started my car up... It's not loud idling but it's super loud on the freeway while cruising... Kinda made me regret putting the silencer in.

This is really the only thing that hes detered me from moving to Cali but its a simple solution. Have a track car that doesnt go on the streets and a clean daily. Anyway, does anyone know what cops are like around sacramento? Thats where I plan on going and im either gonna sell my s14 befor I move out to get a nice s13 to daily or im gonna bring that bitch across country and pay someone to pass it.

Im from Maryland and I know for a face nomater what state your in, it cannot interfere with somons car unless its under certain circumstances. Like if it was over a certain db in a certain city/burb, you can get a fine. But they cannot cite you for anything modified if your not from that state because not all states has the same regulations on cars and emissions so they have no right to do so. West Virginia cops hate me lol assholes:w00t:

SR powered daily driver, but I was pretty low key with how I drove and always respected the cops that would pull me over for the occasional questioning.

Reality is, you got guys who dont know how to deal with cops and are assholes. Doesnt really matter what motor you have, what matters is how you act as an individual. I always laugh when people cry about getting reffed for their SR/RB/whatever. Especially the people that run Buddy Club Spec 2 catbacks, no cat, no muffler, no resonator, shooting flames... Then on top of that, they're low with shitty HIDs and welded diffs that cause the tires to make all sorts of noise. They drive cars that scream "PULL ME OVER", and cry when they do.

Jesus titty-fucking christ people, you gotta pay to play. If you're gonna drive a car like that on the streets, you should expect cops to fuck with you, and not complain about it when they do.

Agreed. I got pulled over for throwing flames out of my exhaust. Got written up for a modded exhaust and no front plate. Whatever. Then the cop was insinuating I was about to race a car on the freeway. Then I got pissed, lol.
Either way, just gotta get the exhaust quieter and get my front plate back on. No biggie. Goota pay to play.

i drove around for a couple years like this, completely gutted with wiring everywhere. do i regret it? well sure, i dont think it was the smartest idea. SR powered daily driver, but I was pretty low key with how I drove and always respected the cops that would pull me over for the occasional questioning.

Reality is, you got guys who dont know how to deal with cops and are assholes. Doesnt really matter what motor you have, what matters is how you act as an individual. When asked why my interior was stripped, I told them a simple answer: i'm rewiring my car. When given a front license plate ticket, I accept it and pay it.

Case closed.

WERD.
im the same way, i drive the limit, keep it low key and when i DO get hassled, i just do what im supposed to and usually get let go with a warning.

intelligent post. this is the problem most people face. Cops are just people. You may not agree with their choice of employment, but face it, you ARE doing something illegal. Doesn't matter whether you agree with it or not, it's illegal. Frankly, when I'm caught doing something illegal, I'm not going to be a prick about it.

Make conversation, be cool, don't lose your head. If you treat the police like humans, most often they're going to treat you like a human, a lot of the cops who are pulling you over are gonna have some sympathy with you if you give them a reason to. If you're a dick... wtf are you expecting them to be cool to you for?

especially the guys who are like screw them, fk this fk that, you're a dbag, blow me, etc.... if I were a cop, I'd give you every ticket possible, ref you, check everything I could, find no cat? 30 day USDOT impound.

Now, if you're being cool to them and they still rape you? deal with it and move on. Complain all you want but it's not going to change the fact that you are indeed breaking the law, pay the fine/ticket and move on.

I don't get the people who have a USDOT illegal swap, blastpipes, rollin on 18's with 14 degrees neg camber and complain that they got reffed. Have any of you heard of a fkn low profile? Yeah, those guys, the same ones who cry racial/social profiling when they get pulled over under suspicion of drug use when they have a giant pot leaf painted on the back of their ride.

i'll even add a bit more to this piss of a thread....

my car was once fitted with a more normal exhaust (dual tip remus) which was pretty low key, but once I installed the SR i wanted something with bigger piping and less restriction. I ordered the RSR exmag and my friend ordered me the WRONG one... he ordered me the GTII which was only 1 or 2 numbers different (part numbers).

So after staring at this bigass RSR box with a highly polished GTII exhaust in it, repeating to my friend "dude this thing is SOOO not me..." i ended up thinking about it and decided to keep it but powdercoated it black.

With that said, even this canister in the back didnt generate nearly as much attention as I thought it would/should. Why? Because it wasnt polished, it was black. In the second pic you cant even see it because its covered up.

Like I said, its really not that big of a deal. Jay Leno drives around all types of silly cars, cars with jet engines in them.. he still manages to keep his nose clean.

My advice? If you have 1 car (daily driver) that is depended on, then be MORE careful. This is the only advice I would give to someone that I didnt necessarily follow myself, and I still managed to keep this car on road. Worse comes to worse, you get popped and deal with the consequences.. but at least if you have an extra car, you wont have to worry so much.

WERD.....and a half.

If you wanna drive a dopetastic JDM tOyTe ride with your bumpers dragging, 11ty bajillion degrees of negative camber, your super dope blast pipes, and an oversized front mount intercooler you gotta realize that you will be fucked with. Same thing goes for those driving around in a car that looks like 10lbs of shit stuffed into a 5lb bag with a loud ass exhaust. That shit gets cops attention and they respond to it.

If you don't think cops are more relaxed on celebs, especially one like Jay Leno, well...sorry lol. Of course he should abide by the laws, and I'm not saying he doesn't. I don't know how you know he manages to keep his nose clean either lol...are you a Jay Leno stalker? And I'm sorry you see yourself as a less individual when compared to Jay Leno.

The stalker thing was a joke too.

ya tell that to David Letterman, lol years ago it was a well known fact that he paid very expensive insurance premiums due to being pulled over for speeding in his Ferrari so much in New York. Oh and if you think the cops go light on on stars?
LOL again, get the fuck out of bum fuck Elk Grove and come down here for awhile.
Stars get hauled in for drunk driving all the time. They get tickets for speeding.
Shit, look at what Mel Gibson did. You think he went all racial just because he was drunk? They were hauling his ass in and his crazy ass wasn't having it. LOL No special treatment, they even let it make the news.

We live here, you don't, we get to see shit first hand. You just dream about it. LOL

Well none of use can know for sure, can we? I know out here in bum fuck Elk Grove that I've gotten pulled over 3 times and had my hood popped each time, and the only reason why I get pulled over is because of the car I drive, not for how I drive it. So maybe everyone that gets pulled over in SoCal should stop bitching?

Wasn't Gibson drunk and acting belligerent in a restaurant? Oops, never mind, he was driving drunk.

btw, dave makes a pretty good point.. its fucked up for everyone. no one is exempt from being processed by the system, celebrity or not. but like i said, i thought it was funny seeing some of the cars that leno owns WITH PLATES. i dont understand how a rocket-powered car can be street legal, but whatever.
