Me and a couple friends have been doing some thinking about making a trip to this over the summer. Anyone on here been to the event? Just looking for personal input on the event, places to stay, all that stuff while in the area.

I was stationed out at Carson for a couple of years. I've been up Pikes Peak three or four times, but never for the Hill Climb.

As far as places to stay, Manitou Springs is your best bet at finding something close to Pikes Peak. But Manitou Springs is also alt trendy so you can expect it to be more expensive than places down in the Springs.

The northern and northwestern parts of the Springs is a lot cleaner and newer. Try around North Academy Blvd.

Random Stuff:

-There's a lot of biker bars in the Springs. All the college folk hang out downtown. And a lot of military people everywhere.

-Pikes Peak can be cold, even in July. Bring a coat and hat.

-In the summer, it rains everyday from 4 to 6 p.m. The thunder storms, while impressive at first, will loose their appeal as every local t.v. station interrupts their programming for their exclusive coverage on the possible tornado conditions.

-Garden of the Gods is beautiful. Best scenery for ruck march training.

-Did I mention a lot of military in the Springs?

this is going off topic fast, but garden of the gods is amazing, and you should go. i've also never been to this event, but i've been up pike's peak twice by cog rail.

i can see pikes peak from my front porch, but i won't be able to go this year. maybe next year. there's a guy running a 240 this year, there's a thread about it on FA.

also, i wouldn't really call Manitou springs trendy, more hippie than anything. still nice though.

you could possibly rent a cabin in woodland park. it's probably as close as manitou springs since the start of the road is actually around the backside of the mountain a bit. it's beautiful up there and it would be a nice vacation if you're into that sort of thing. but if you want to get into town from there, it's a good 45 minutes. at least the drive is fun.

there's always the regular hotels in town. the far side of town is only maybe 30 minutes at most from the base of the road. anything in colorado springs is 20 minutes minimum though.

for reference, if you look on a map, the pikes peak hwy starts in Cascade. i'm not sure why that's listed on a map though, i didn't realize it was a town.

I am used to the mountains. I grew up in Bozeman, MT. I am really pumped! I just need to find 2 more locals to go to lower the cost of gas and hotels.
