not 100% sure but i think it might be chain slap!
clunking noise or slapping noise when the engine begins to warm-up....goes away when i rev the engine! warmed-up and at idle comes the noise.
you guys think this is severe?? or just forget about it and wait for sr swap?
thnx ya'll

if it rattles when you start it up it could be your timing chain tensioner going bad.. my single cam ka did that for a while..but i just replaced the motor cause i had low compression in all the cylinders..

have you taken the valvecover off to look for any signs of foul play or just the "normal" chain slap? that could help and probably solve your own question

It could be low oil pressure upon start up. check your oil pan for dents. If you see some. replace the oil pan. If not, then check the timing chain tensioner and remove the upper chain guide.

Remove the chain guides. Continue driving car, now noise free.

I would change your oil and throw a thing of lucas in there. If your oil is thining out thats what it is... Or the tensioner is going bad.
I just use the rattle as an extra indicator that I need to cahgne my oil :0

Its from build up on the tensioner/chain guide. You need to take it out and clean that bad boy!

Are all of you that baked???(excpet ProjectRDM of course)
It's most likely the front upper timing chain guide... It's common on every single KA ever produced... They even removed it later because of how prone it was to breaking....

85%of the people on this board have got to be inbred. its like the blind leading the blind. nissan had a TSB for the upper timing chain guide. that is most likely your problem

Bingo. What I said, what everyone else should have said, though what no one seems able to understand.

I have the same problem. Has soon has I read about the timing chain guide breaking cause my motor started doing the chain rubbing sound, I took it off and it was cracked but not yet broken. But I still get that sound so I'm pretty sure is the chain tension that went bad and I heard it's a bitch to replace.

There's two guides. They both rattle and they both need to be removed. The lower guide, the long plastic one, is not removable but updated to a metal one later on. The two to remove are right below the valve cover and right beside the distributor.
