k so i own a 96 240sx that i have many many plans for.
one including a kouki front....im deciding if i should get full coverage or liability as i bought the car with 4500.....
i only make 1grand a month and am a full time student as well......and im just asking is it worth getting full coverage on our 240's as its not like a 10,000$ car.
I dont plan on getting it totaled, but just sketched out on the 240 theft going around in socal

ok heres what i did. first year of owning my car i rolled around on just liability. then after i put all my blood sweat and tears into my car i upped the insurance. i make a little more than you do and this way seamed to work just fine.

however it all depends where you live. myself in socal = shitty drivers.

your decision though its your baby

^ same here. 1st year liability. then started to work on the car and upped the insurance. (now i have full coverage) i have a 89 coupe. As long as u think it is worth it then do it. If u think its not then keep what u got.

full coverage is pointless on old cars like ours.

if this really is a car you plan on taking care of and keeping, go with collectors insurance (haggerty). as long as the car is not driven every day, they should be able to cover you

I've run full coverage for a while now. On my first 240 it really paid of because I clipped the back of a car with the front right, and repairs were well over 3 grand on pretty minimal damage. But that was 8 years ago and parts were a little harder to come across...

I currently run full coverage due to the fact that I have more assets and would rather pay insurance premiums then lose assets...It costs me $1300/yr for both cars, but may run you that same amount for just your 240. If you can afford it, go for it.

full coverage does sound nice but if you think about it if the car is totaled your only gonna get what kbb has to offer

replacing the parts that were probably damaged from the accident might actually go over that amount so it wont do any good

as far as ixfxi mentioned about collectors insurance is an option but you can only drive the car for i think less than 500 miles a year ( i know its less than that but im trying to round up)

car isn't worth much according to KBB standards..

I'm guessing they total cars that are barely damaged.

so people end up not going through the insurance and fixing it themselves to avoid a salvage title/totaled car.

If someone was to steal your car, I've heard they give you near nothing for the car ( KBB ). As far as modifications, I've read you need receipts for everything. If you happen to have receipts they still may not cover it.

I have full-coverage, but I don't pay much for it.

I use to have my car as full coverage and downgraded to liability only. Since I use to be an insurance adjuster I already know the most I would have gotten was 2300.

yes kkb is not much. but to be honest, i would rather get something, better then not getting anything at all, or just the im sorry about your car, but there is nothing that we can do for u. full coverage at least ull get some thing for the lose. i would rather take the money and buy another 240, then come all out the pocket for another one. makes sence to me.

i dont think i'll ever get full coverage for my 240. a guy i knew a while back got his turboed eclipse totalled by some moron on the highway who swerved into him. he got the kbb value of the car which was like $4k?? because every mod was considered an accessory of the car and not a part of its value.

Some Insurance companies will give cover upgrades i.e. mods. Usually the ones that will, will charge you more for it, but its worth it if you can get it.

Some companies will give you real market value on your car. I.E. not what KBB says but what the car actually goes for on the open market. A lot of these companies know full well that KBB is not always correct and is not the value written in stone.
They usually will ask you to provide proof of the market value. If you get a bunch of adds showing SR cars selling for $7500 they will take that into consideration.

Also some companies will take an appraised value for your car and insure it for that. Usually thats down the road of companies like Haggerty.

Fact is if you do your homework you can get the coverage. You will most likely pay extra for it, but for peace of mind its worth it. Its the road I am going with my car. I want it covered to the hilt.

how much you get for the car really depends on YOUR insurance company.Example: When i wrecked my integra because someone cut me off and then ran i only had liability so i was like oh sh*t im screwed. My dad called and insurance covered it anyway and gave me 4300 after i bought it back from them to part out(96 gsr with 150k). Ended making bank and buying my s14

I got fucked when I had full coverage. But it was the company I was using, USAA can suck my balls. Honestly I would much rather register all of my mods with my insurance company for full coverage than run liability. It helps me sleep at night knowing my shit is covered. W/e works for you though I guess.

You guys should read up on your insurance policies, because your agent will not tell you all the small details that will help you get the full value of your car.

Insurance companies are supposed to pay you either "Repair Value" or "Replacement Value" when a claim is made. Meaning, if you can prove that replacing your car is actually worth more than KBB, then they will pay you that particular amount.

To prove that your car is worth more than KBB is pretty simple. Keep all the receipts of your mods and maintenance. A properly maintained car generally has a higher value, and showing all your upgrades increases the value of your car.

ALSO, at the time of a claim, IMMEDIATELY start looking for similar cars that are for sale at a really high price within 50 miles of your zip code. This shows to the insurance company that your car actually fetches a higher price on the market, and replacing it will actually cost you more than KBB. You have a limited time to show this proof, so its best to look everywhere you can, everyday, so that you can compile as much proof as possible.

FURTHERMORE, if you purchased full coverage insurance and have stayed with the same company long enough, they are more compelled to appease you, and pay you larger amounts of money. This isnt really the case when you buy insurance from those "budget" insurance companies, since those companies are usually skimming profits already, and are usually buying insurance coverage from the bigger companies, meaning that they do not have room to negotiate.

To the OP, full coverage technically does not cost that much, unless your driving history sucks. To help reduce the cost of full coverage, you can always reduce the amount of coverage for property damage, medical expenses, etc. Also, it helps to estimate your yearly mileage on the lower side. Be careful of reporting low mileage because some insurance companies will demand that you periodically report your mileage.

Well I dont want my insurance company knowing I have a V8 in my 240. Im just going to get minimum coverage. If I wreck the car, buy a new shell and transfer parts.

best option out there. I've considered getting it in the near future but I don't have a garage at the moment, so unless I paid to keep it in storage, I can't get it. I've heard nothing but great things about haggerty.

Not worth it man. You get into a fender bender with a 240 they will total it.
