View Full Version : S15 turbo - conflicting information

Just installed an s15 T28 on my S13 SR20.

Did a bunch of searching regarding the maximum safe boost of this turbo, and came up with several different numbers. Some say 18-19 psi is the max, some say only 16.

Can anyone lay this to rest for me? I want to tune under the max, to allow headroom and increase the turbo's lifespan. I am running a Z32 MAF and 555 injectors, so no problem there.

Thanks in advance.

Eh, every car is different and "safe" is relative to what your talking about. You talking about safe, keep your engine blowing safe or blow your turbo safe?

not that im a pro, but from the research ive done anything more than 15psi starts pushing the turbo past its efficiency range and also shortens the lifespan of the turbo... so what the point? you might as well bump up to a larger turbo at that point (which will also have a shorter lifespan as well)

I've always been under the impression T25s can be run at 12-14psi max and 'T28s' can be run at 15-18psi max.

stay around 14-15, i have mine at 14 and it gives me more than enough power to get what i need!

I ran mines between 15 - 18 for two years, never had a problem, pulled it and it looked like new. I was told that the CHRA are almost the same as the GT2871r and can be pushed to 20-22psi, however is may not be efficient at that point.

id say it depends how tuned the set up is, if ur going MAF and 555 inj only, id keep it at around 14-16, but thats just me

I personally am running the same setup, s15 t28, 550cc, z32maf and enthalpy rom tune on my s14 blacktop. I have my boost set at 15psi and it has been there for about a year and a half to two years with absolutely no problems. My tune is capable of handling 18psi, but I just havent had time to get on the dyno and push the boost and see how the afr's are. If I were you, I would just keep it around 15psi and if you want a little extra every now and then, bump it up to 18psi. I wouldnt run 18psi all day nor would I pass that since you are basically out of the efficiency range as has been mentioned above.

From our experiences the ball bearing turbos don't last long compare to s13 turbo,
and we always keep it about 1 bar(15psi) for daily(street).
You can always have different setting for the boost controller for higher boost when you need it.
Enjoy the car that's the fun part of building it.
Cheers,

Sam

I've run 15~16lbs of boost all day every day on my s15 engine and haven't had a problem with the turbo yet. Been almost 2 years. Engine/turbo had est 30k miles when i got it.

I have nearly the same exact setup as you, s15 turbo, 550cc, and RB20 maf on my Nistune. I had it tuned to 17.3psi and daily drive the car on about 15psi. Haven't had any issues yet but its only been tuned for about 3 months. Not sure if I could have made more power by upping the boost.

15psi, no need to go higher. If you want more boost get a different turbo. GT2871R .64 AR would be a good choice if you want some awesome response

15-16lbs is what you should run. you could run 18.

or if he doesn't want to spend that kind of cash can't he just upgrade to an hks actuator good for 15+psi, just asking also cuz i'm gonna upgrade to an s15 turbo in a month with z32 maf and either 480cc or 550cc
