OK i have searched and from what i can gather for a nissan manual trannys found in 240s (SR or KA same shit) I should use GL-4 oil. Around 75-90w. GL-5 is bad because of the additives/detergents deteriorates yellow metals, like the syncros. AND some ppl swear by GM or Penzoil synchromesh, which dosnt sound smart to me. Nissan recomends GL-4 but i dont think GL-5 was around when they first designed these trannys. SO WTF should i use, and where can i get it? I ask becuase i cant find just plain ol GL-4 anywhere in town and thats what im thinking is the best choice, but theres no research that i know of proving or disproving anything stated above.

even if there isn't research, which there is but I'm not going to find it again I'm lazy, the difference in the way the gearbox feels is amazing w/ redline, just order it if you can't get it local it's worth the 2 day wait

You can't find GL-4 or a synthetic in GL-4? Most of the Organic 75w-90's are GL-4. Synthetics are harder to find.
Amsoil MTG
Redline MT90
Royal Purple Max-Gear
Are all GL-4 rated Synthetics. Many synthetics like Mobil-1 are only GL-5.

Im going with MT90, i was unaware that O'reillys carried redline so i ordered some. The oreillys here dont advertise redline at all, zero. And yea the Castrol and Mobil-1 are kinda tricky, they just say they meet or exceed GL-5 ratings, usally on the back which means its a GL-5.

Hince the reason for this thread.

Amsoil number #1 do a search, there is a whole thread dedicated to tranny oil reviews.....
Gl-4 should be used like you said it protects different types of metal. I use GL-5 and no problems here....

Sycromesh is a no go. It is like water and does not lubricate properly. I used it with bad results.
Napa sells GL-4 based 75w-90. It comes in a little bottle with a green label or a gallon jug with a green label for around 20 bucks.

First of all do we really need to open up this can of worms again? There are a million threads out there on gear oils, just use the miraculous search button. GL-4/GL-5 doesn't mean shit. It all depends on the particular oil you are using. MT90 is a GL-4 oil and it has been known to screw up tranny's. I use neo 75w90 RHD which exceeds GL-6 specs and have yet to hurt a bearing or synchro in 2 years.

MT90 blows donkey balls and ruins tranny's. Don't use it.

GL4 means it's yellow metal friendly. Which our sycros and block rings are made of. A lot of GL-5's are not yellow metal friendly
