Long story short........I need to know if my motor is really a Redtop or a Blacktop. It has a redtop ECU but I know that the Redtop ECU can work with a Blacktop motor. Is there anyway to tell besides looking at the ECU number?? Like is there a stamp or a number anywhere on the block that would help me. Thanks in advance.

They're both the same..

Supposedly you can tell by looking at the "cooling fins" stamped in the front although I have seen redtops with this also.

You could rip off the oil pan and look at the oil pickup. The newer ones have some sort of support that helps it in case of a dent or something..

Trust me when I say Ive searched. Ive even called around to find out. The reason I need to know is so that I can buy the right Power FC.

If I'm not mistaken all the blacktops have the cooling fins on the front of the head(dont know about the notchtop or whatever, but that would be obvious anyway)... the latter redtop models also have the cooling fins. I think they have the same 54c internals or something as the blacktop s13s. Then again, I only know what I read about the sr20s...

so
notchtop: s14 blacktop
cooling fins on front of head: late redtop or s13 blacktop(same difference?!?)
normal head: redtop

Correct me if I'm wrong(it's likely.)

redtop and blacktop ecu's are interchangeable SAVE for the type-x blacktop, which has a slightly different pin-out, but no matter what power fc you get (as long as it's s13) you can make it work with a little wiring work...

and the difference in the pickups is a larger oval shaped opening on the newer ones, compared to the redtop's narrow slit of an opening. there is no "support" or anything.

If you have a redtop ecu then buy the Power FC for the Redtop as the s13 redtop and blacktop are the same.

I meant look at the pickup, they look distinctively different
S13 vs. S14

cooling fins are not "stamped" into the head they are cast, that is the best way to tell hwoever late model redtops have cooling fins too. If you really want to know if its a blacktop, check the ecu, does it have a fatty o2? etc.

Thanks for all the help so far. I'll check the pickup asap, but I get kinda confused as far as the cooling fins. I need pics. Does anyone have some?? Thanks in advance.
