ok i've been trying to get an LSD for a while.. and haev decided to go the cheaper route for now. i can pick up a VLSD from pdm or another reputable source(open to any suggestion of where to buy from) or i can check the local junkyard.. what do i look for in buying one though.. any suggestions?

make sure it works..that's pretty important
haha
check the side flanges, 5 star (5 bolt) or 3 (6 bolt). you axles might be different (seems s13 is always 3 star 6 bolt). also back cover, is it s14 (2 bolt) or s13 (4 bolt). covers can be changed though, same w/ axles.
mileage (if known) and when drain, any metal in the fluid or on the drain plug (magnetic)
pdm-racing had some last time i was at their page.
vlsd blows. so slow to engage. bleh.
I say... just bite the bullet and buy a clutch type. :) muah hahaha... you will regret getting the VLSD once you attend your first drift event! .... If you're just going to do road race and auto-x (and/or mainly street driving) then by all means get a vlsd, but if you're doing serious street or drift, get either 1.5 way or 2way. :o

what do YOU plan to do with the car?

well guys.. i value ur opinion...i mainly do club racing(road racing).. btu coasionally i'll auto-x if i pass tech.
but i want to get into drifting. i just spent mad money.
- just ordered some avs-es100's 205/60/15 and
- just replaced my brake fluid got some kvr pads and rotors up front and ss brakelines(ss brakelines not on yet)
- did battery relocation
- rear stb
- oem clutch (not installed)
- just ordered whiteline sways
- soon as my car is outta the shop (2 weeks) i'm prolly goign with either jic's or i might go all out spend soem extra dough on zeal b-6's...
so i can either get the zeals and a vlsd or jic's and a decent LSD... i dunno if i want cltuch type though.. dont they run botu $1k... what bout mechanical?... i heard i can get some for $500... you guys have any suggestions?

sounds good
zeal b6 would probably be overkill. jic flt-a2 should suffice for what you want to do. i find zeals are more designed for seroius track/auto-x. like hardcore type. flta2 will be stiff enough for street use and great on the courses.
mechanical lsd is ok. i ahve one. i think it owuld be good for what you want to. it is quiet and still engages faster then VLSD (but not by much, still lags)
id say get the LSD before coilovers. you can deal w/ body roll w/ good weight transfer. but you cant deal w/ an open diff. it has a mind of its own.

Clutch, Gear, Viscous, those are your choices.. what the hell does "mechanical" mean? A locker? what?

Not looking to flame at all... and I don't drift so I'm not much help, but I can help if I get my terminology straight... I hear too many people refer to weak clutch diffs as 'mechanical'.
gear/helical/"torsen"/"mechanical" etc. diffs are usually really expensive.

you want quality? you gotta pay out to have fun. no cheap quality items really. maybe pHantop grip if you want. that's about it.
mine was a good price (cant say im selling it soon). :) it was used LSD from japan.
i dont know much about gear. i'd say go with Nismo.
i prefer clutch LSD. i am gettign a new Nismo SSS one this month

500??? hell no. its worth more then that. 2 way LSD full pumpkin w/ side shafts and ready for straight up bolt in a s13? 500? nah. more then that.
buyer? yeah a few. but i forgot who.people PM me and im like yeah ok and forget the next day. i'll post it when its ready to sell, so keep an eye out. shipping hurts. its a full good 80some pounds :)
mine was purchased thru a private party
um..jspec. be specific if you want a reply. nothing like "what can you get me" cuz you wont get a reply. you gotta know EXACTLY what you want
check out ATS too. they distribute in USA and Japan. i forget their website, google it for like ATS LSD or something.
runs around 800ish+ iirc. probably closer to 900

if i do go ahead and buy the vlsd from PDm is there anything ele i need to get to make the swap complete?... it jsut bolts right up there ..right?
Dousan_PG

yep should bolt in assuming:
your axles are 3 star 6 bolt (pretty sure they will be 99% sure)
and the one pictured (http://www.pdm-racing.com/products/sspecials.html) looks to be S13 w/ the 4 bolt back and 3/6 bolt side flange. should be good to go
email pdm and verify. don's hella cool and helpful
oh says non-abs VLSDs are sold out! boohoooo if you have abs then youa re ok. otherwise..u gotta wait. 325 is a lot imho. but i guess its ok.

ok i found a vlsd that happens to be 5 star.. but the guy is throwing in the axles too... he says it'll fit just fine.. is there gonna be any thing to worry bout?

if it's five star, you'll likely need to swap the diff covers. not a big deal at all.

no, not necessarily. if its from japan, it COULD be a s13. iirc, kouki 180sx had 3 star, 6 bolt side shafts and axles
but zenki and chuuki had the 5 bolt sides.
if its from the USA, yeah you'll need to swap your open diff cover onto the (im assuming what car its from) J30 or s14 vlsd.
you can get a new gasket from your local nissan dealer, should be like 20 bucks.

I got a question, are all lsds a bolt on affair? Is it just the pdm vlsds that come with the complete full pumpkin?

and iirc, a s15 diff will require s15 driveshaft, or AT driveshaft.
i read that on FA i believe. dotn quote me on it. illl verify it later.
