For those living or have been to Japan, what should I eat, drink, buy, do in Tokyo? I am leaving 2m morning and will be there for 8 days and plan to only stay in Tokyo. I'd like to avoid the whole tourist thing. Any recs on places would be appreciated.

Go to soap randu (soap land) I miss japan. Get some coco's curry. Stay away from the school girls they are not legal. Go to buy me drinkie bar. Haha. There is so much to do learn how to use the subway. Cabs are expensive. Hit up a love motel with your new sugar mama

In TKO, Tsukiji fishmarket - Got at 6 am Awesome Sushi ask for Omakase or go to DaiWu in Tsukiji and Line up. They speak ok english... 30 bux gets you the best sushi you can find in Japan. Omakase means chief special.
Then after that walk around to the right as you walk back towards the station and they have a AWESOME Ramen and stuff there... You can buy fruit too and one things you'll notice fruit is hella expensive, so get it from there. Sorta a farmers market.
Then got to Shinonome where Super AutoBacs is. I think its their flag ship store of japan and just got AWWWwwwwww..... Then on the way back stop off at O Daiba and visit Tokyo Mega Web (where you can play Intial D where you actually you sit IN a life size car and play the game and the car shifts sideways when you slide.) Then Visit Venus Fort also at ODaiba which has a LOT of girls and good shopping. Looks like the Venetian Inside. Then After that go to Toyota Car... Also in that mall and you will see ALL the newest Toyota and the Toyota car vending machine where its on a 6 floor high vending machine and you press the button and it comes down to your level so you can see it. They also have all Toyota F1 Stuff, SuperGT stuff, and a really cool store.) If you have a girlfriend, go on the ferris wheel there.....
This is all close to TKO.
In Tokyo, probably swing by Rappongi and visit bars called Wall Street, Hard Rock Cafe, Gas Panic, Club777(Pretty Ghetto though).
Then right near there go to Omotesando and Harajuku and look at all the crazy Harajuku girls and then Omotesando where you see all the nice pretty ones. Pretty much the most girls per square inch in Tokyo you will see.
Then probably maybe find a coco ichiban, but I really suggest a place in Shibuya that is next to the Loft (Like nice store) its an Indian Place 2 stories or so.... Smalll still, but good and cheap Indian food.
If you going now, maybe go to Meiji Jingu which is Meiji castle in TKO, its right near the train station in Harajuku station.
You gotta visit Akihabara and just look at allt he weird cosplay people and goth people and they got lot of cool games and xrated stuff... Its basically electric city.
And then Go to Asakusa and go to the largest shrine in TKO. Its pretty cool there cause they got carnival style stuff and eat Mochi made right in front of you and other grass cakes... they call it.....
Best place to pick up chicks who are just plain H o .....s Rappongi for sure.

I was there too, like XMas time, I don't think they have curtains, but who cars, no one will see. It takes 62 minutes to go all the way around.... You know why cause there are 62 cars on it and it takes 1 minute to load and unload haahah...
They have this crazy cage for the ferris wheel where they have NO floors and stuff the ENTIRE cage is transparent and I was afraid of f....ing heights!!! Damn gf!!!
Oh wellz good times...
OOOoooo also go to the game area and they have some food like takoyaki, crepes, taiyaki, and other stuff.... Wooo

Lets see
Check out Asakusa, has a real old work kind of feel, lots of temples out there, and by the train station there's a place where you rent those cruiser bikes so you cruise around.
Try to head to Rappongi for the Tokyo Tower also walk around they have some cool buildings with artwork, etc that you can check out near the train station cool spot to take the girl...
Use the Trains! There so efficient and get you from place to place really effectively...Remember if your staying out late the train stops running at Midnight and doesnt start until dawn like around 5:00am so plan ahead...If your into shopping/Sneakers that whole thing Harajuku is a must...Try to go to Suidobashi Station rite outside there's the Tokyo Dome and like a mini theme park with a coaster across the street was alotta fun there..
Also try to stay in a hostel for at least one night, there's really cool people there and you can get some great ideas from them and even hang out them for a day to go check a place out...Just search for a good rated one...If into Gadgets Akihabara is a must everything electronics/games/fun, etc is sold out there....
Have Fun!

Thanks guys. My biggest priority is good food. I would love to rent a scooter/motorcycle to ride around the city if that is possible. I plan to be in each district for a entire day so I would like to eat/do what represents each district so I can leave with a satisfied feeling of accomplishment.
Beer gardens are where they have all you can eat/drink meals (which sounds like best bang for the buck for me). My friend told me about them when she was there last year. I plan to go to one but I would like some more opinions about them.
I would like to buy a new pair of kicks exclusive to japan. I would also like to buy some car parts such as a steering wheel or something. Nothing else really since my 240 has been neglected and forced to daily driver duty.
I like the alleyway bars or restaurants i see on tv. Any recs on those?

If you're interested in food, chowhound has an okay section on Japan.
Japan - Chowhound (http://chowhound.chow.com/boards/45)
If anyone knows of another foodie site that has info on Japan, I'd like know.
Obviously the Japanese food in Japan is going to be great.
Def go for some Omakase at a good sushi/sashimi place as slider says.
just don't insult the chef by asking for California rolls/Samurai Rolls, or stuff like that.
Kaiseki is good too, although that's more a specialty of Kyoto iirc.
What's probably not so well known is that the Japanese make some killer euro fare.
Italian & French are very good in Japan.
Tokyo has a surprising amount of multiple Michelin star eateries.
It's a city that's in the league of NYC, Paris, & maybe barcelona.
Japanese Italian is a must try, and usually not too expensive.
The way it's prepared isn't authentic Italian, but has its own flair (interesting sauces and perfect pasta texture) & rivals the real thing.
Even the desserts are usually top notch.
The French food's not bad at all either, but kinda expensive.
If you do decide to hit that, I'm sure you can't go wrong even if you hit a bistro type place.
there's also some more acclaimed french chefs who've opened their main place or branch in tokyo.
here's Pierre Gagnaire's http://www.pierre-gagnaire.jp/e_index.html
only tried his restaurant 'pierre' in hong kong 2-3 yrs ago, but was happy with the tasting menu.
Wish I could make recommendations, but I haven't been to Japan in over 5 yrs.

^^^Werd, Japanese Italian is the bomb. Sayzeria is pretty good...they have GREAT Carbonara. Also....a place called Honke Kamedoya is pretty good and CHEAP.
If you are down by Tokyo Dome, and like seafood...there is a Bubba Gumps there.
At least ONE pizza hut pizza is a MUST...you wont regret it.

japanese carbonara is indeed killer.
such good bacon! :D
pizza hut is an interesting suggestion.
seems like every country does it different.

Right on. This is all great info. I'm gonna staying in Shinjuku for 8 nights. I will be going to Hong Kong after Tokyo so the mayonnaise corn pizza can wait until then haha. I'm down for some italian food.
Is Sumo a seasonal thing? I'd love to check out a match or a Pride fight or something like that. That Toyota car museum sounds pretty nice.
My flight is hours away. I can't wait :rawk:

Don't ask for anything but "omakase". When you order Omakase (like with Kaiseki Ryori), you don't pick anything, you just eat whatever they put in front of you. This is a GOOD thing.
Otherwise, get Takoyaki from a street cart somewhere.

So I just got into my hotel in Shinjuku. It took forever to get from NRT into Tokyo. Its about 9pm right now here and I am tired as hell from jetlag. I went to Mcdonalds to try the teriyaki burger and thought it was ok. The portions are smaller like everyone says but not as small as I thought it would be. The fries taste the same and the chicken nuggets appear to be made of real chicken instead of cardboard like back in the US. Another thing I noticed is that 80% of the people I see outside are wearing pcoats. There are also a lot of females.
Grant- I might take you up on your offer. Do I just dial that exact number on any local phone?
Again, thanks for all the info guys. So far Tokyo feels just like Hong Kong (I'm not from HK whoever was asking, I have just been there many times). I am too tired to notice the difference.:o. Ill keep you guys updated. Keep it coming

Yes, I'm in Okinawa, but my wife is from Yokohama, so we go to mainland quite often, I've eaten at the CoCo there and it wasn't any better IMO.
I know many Americans love it, but if people would be willing to stray away from all the other Americans, they would really find some much better places to eat.

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, I skipped over a bunch of posts...
but if you can go to the tokyo city view in Roppongi. Awesome view of basically all of tokyo. Really cool place to see.
There's a pretty cool english pub in shinjuku also, the Hub Pub. It's a few blocks north, north-east of Shinjuku Station.

Go to the ritz carlton tokyo for the sunday Brunch. All you can drink Don Perri, the meal costs a lot but if your like me and drink like 20+ glasses it evens out.
Just walk everywhere in tokyo. Just devote a whole day to walking around, dont plan it just start walking. You see some hella cool shops, places to eat, etc.
Go to the kiwamishinaji ramen shop (its a chain) and order this -
http://i296.photobucket.com/albums/mm182/530_kat/1497096699_2345308200.jpg
(that cube thing on the top right is a thing I call the flavor cube, you add it to your broth when you get bored and it completly changes the flavor of the broth. Its epic.)
Other than eating, partying in Roppongi, looking at the main temples, and the crappie car parts store in tokyo like yellow hat, etc., Tokyo IMO is a tourist trap.

Minus the plane ticket & money spent on aftermarket parts over there, how much would like 2-3 weeks in Tokyo cost for some light duty exploration??

there is no realistic answer to such a broad ended question.
it could cost next to nothing if you live with a friend.
personally, I spent around $150-$100 a day for a hotel room in Shinjuku,
approx $100 a day in food (I never skimp on food when on vacation)
maybe $50 on sightseeing.
Tokyo is expensive, and especially so if you don't know friends to show you around.
Then again I only stay 2-4 days when in Japan, so i make the most of my stay.
this might help you plan your trip;

I went through Travelocity for my hotel which came out to be 120 a night at the Hotel Sunroute in Shinjuku. I was very pleased with my stay there. The internet connection was very fast, the staff was friendly and spoke english. There is also a shuttle that takes you door to door from Narita Airport.
As for Tokyo, yes it can be very expensive if you expect to continue living lavishly like you would at home. For reference, I spent about 2k for my 8 days there, which included everything but airfare. Some costs that snuck up on me were the trains, snacks, and BEER. There are many sights, sounds, and smells that will catch your eye/nose so take that into account when planning your trip. I could have been better about my spending but I don't regret anything. You are on vacation. Watch out for the Nigerians that prowl the streets. I heard they get you drunk and make you spend all your money on girls. It was amusing getting hassled the first couple of times about nice girls and massages but it got annoying when you can't walk 10 steps without somebody coming up and soliciting their services. I would just avoid them unless your into that sort of stuff.
Please don't go to Japan expecting it to be like Tokyo Drift. Japan has a beautiful and rich culture with much more to offer than just cars. The people are very nice, the streets are clean, low-crime rate, great food. I really loved it there. I am exploring China now and Japan is still fresh in my head. I miss it and I can't wait to go back. If you know a local there that can show you around, it would be ideal. Grant was kind enough to take me to a couple of places and it was an amazing experience, especially rollin around in his jeep. Grant was one of the coolest dudes I have ever met, Thanks again!. If you don't know anyone there, just walking around will blow your mind. The japanese are very respectful and polite so if you go it would be wise to show them that same respect by not walking around like you own everything.
I got about 20gigs of pictures/videos from japan. The internet here in china isn't that great so when I get back home I'll upload some more.
I HIGHLY reccommend visiting Japan. Safe Travels.

I know many Americans love it, but if people would be willing to stray away from all the other Americans, they would really find some much better places to eat.
Spoken like a true imbecile. I am begging you to tell me where all these hidden places are on Okinawa that are so much better then all those evil places Americans eat at.
I go to places in Naha with my friends that I can guarantee hasn't seen an American in years if at all. You know what? THE FUCKING FOOD TASTES THE SAME!!!
The only thing better about going to places Americans don't visit is you don't have to listen to their stupid conversations but then again Japanese people can hold some really stupid conversations too.
For a second I actually forgot who you were.. Now that I've reminded myself of who you are.. What you posted before makes perfect sense now that I realize it's coming from someone who went full retard and never came back.

Personally, i am not a big fan of cocoichiban but It is something that Japan took and changed it to fit their tastebuds.. I would definitely say try it if you never have.. 10 levels of spiciness. I dont eat spicy(karakuchi) food so i order "Amacuchi" which means mild or sweet "Amai"...

Bringing ths thread back from the dead, sorry. I'm thinking about planning a trip to japan with my friend, is there any way we could obtain cars to go and drift? I know that i would have to get an international driving permit and be atleast 18 from the research i have done. This isn't the only reason i would want to visit japan, but i would love to be able to rent or buy/sell an s13 or something and drive there.Could any zilvians in japan offer me some help?

Upgarage... not really near tokyo at all... there is one about 1 hour away by train in the suburbs of tokyo, but nothing in it really. Tokyo is not really a city per se, its an area, so depends where you going to be in Tokyo. You might as well go to Shinonome where the largest Super Autobacs is.... Shinonome is right next to Odaiba station, takes about 40 mins from Ebisu or Shinjuku....

Dude that is in odaiba, super autobacs is a stone throws away.... Try to hook up with Grant aka yokota13... See if he will take you out the daifuto... Otherwise travel out to Chiba, where basically all the car places are... In general, there aren't many car shops out there in tokyo. You have a better chance in Osaka to find some car places....
Take pics at Shinonome Autobacs, always cool cars and scoots out there.

Good grief, RT air-fare from Florida to Narita is almost a grand now?!
Few years ago, it was around 600 RT from a west coast hub like LAX (los angeles).
Singapore Air is my fav airline.
The air is filtered very well, great entertainment unit, good seats, spacious for economy, decent food, etc.
I almost prefer flying economy on Singapore, than business on a mediocre airline like United or Cathay.
JAL is decent, maybe a little better than United, but nothing exceptional.

Shizoka is like pretty small in general lol. Should have ventured out into Osaka which is not too far, which has probably the biggest UpGarage if not one of the biggest. Osaka is car city, most cars either come out of TKO or Osaka, but mainly Osaka that makes it state side. There are like 4 huge auction houses for cars in Kobe for used cars. I mean cars are dirt cheap in auctions, but licensing is what gets you.
JAL has gone down HORRIBLEY since UA took them over.... FAWK..... You know what is really good surprising NORTHWEST Airlines.... I flew with them like 5 or 6 years ago, but vowed never to go back, I think the were picked up by some other company and it was super nice and super cheap. Was hella chatting it up with the stewardess cause I was hella bored and they were too and the plan was brand spanking new. It was cool.... But... the only gripe!! Better videogames please... God! Virgin America has Doom on it!!!!

Just found out my job is sending me to Japan in October. :)
I'm going to be in Fukuoka for a few days but I'll spend the rest of the time in Tokyo before I have to head back.
I'm planning to get a railpass and take the train to and from Fukuoka instead of jumping on another flight. I figure this way I could check something out along the way.
Anyone ever travel around Japan with a railpass? First time in Japan so it's overwhelming to figure out what to do with my time while I'm there.

Rail passes are kewl, just gotta make sure which one it qualifies for. Nozomi I think is the express for bullet trains and there is a slightly slower one. Double check on which rail pass you will get so don't get on the wrong train. Fukuoka is way south, so best bet and the most fun, OSAKA!!! A lot of car shops there, Upgarages, Kobe is cool too... Kyoto always good and all in that general area. Tokyo is far up there, so think about spending a weekend there....

I'll have to check out the rail pass again but I don't think it lets me on the fastest train, but the next step down.
They suggested I not take the train but take a short flight from Tokyo because it's faster. Fuck that.. I'd rather see more of Japan while I'm there. taking another flight is the last thing I'd want to do after being on an airplane for 11+ hrs.
Although last year I flew from London to LA on a 777 and it was hands down the best flight ever.

Seriously on a bullet train, I was on the nozomi, which I think is the fastest one? if not, close and I couldn't look out the window. It was going so fast I was getting sick... seriously... its far to Tokyo, so its a good idea to fly too.... Its nice...
Rusker
09-02-2009, 01:34 PM
I believe the train you took was the fastest one. The pass I got allows me to only ride the one just below it. So I'll be going 155-ish, vs your 175mph train. :)
I'd rather experience the train than taking another flight anyway. :wavey:
