View Full Version : How many drifters take their cars off the road?
The ROMAN

Some nights I take my S13 out, if nothing else just to make sure it's running right, but with local events, even a fairly new local road course now, it seems like a waste of money to deal with keeping it on the street. Furthermore, although I've had no recent tickets, I once had 18 points on my license. As of right now it has come down to 9 (3 points off every year for 3 years), but that still means if I get a reckless or something similar, I could lose my license again, since it's an automatic penalty if you hit 12 points.
My insurance is due soon and dreaded inspection will follow a few months later, so I'm thinking of just taking my car off the road completely. My question is how many drifters with access to trailers actually keep their cars on the road? Is it a pain to get it back on the road at some point if you decide to re-register and insure it? I feel like I'd be better off making it a track-only car but I'd like to hear some opinions first.

invest in a prepaid legal service or a good attorney and stop breaking traffic laws
preferably the latter first
you live in NEW JERSERY not California
drive it on the street

I've been pretty good with the law in the last 5 years. I drove like a retard when I was 17-19 (26 now) and lost my license multiple times, which led to driving probation, which I couldn't get off until I stopped getting pulled over. It's been an expensive road out but my concern is more inspection and such than tickets as I don't really street drift or anything anymore.

I drive my 240 on the street almost everyday in the summer. Clean record for 10 years and insanely cheap car insurance. Like the other dude said, keep a clean record and quit breaking traffic laws and you shibby fine. I don't really do any street drifting though. Occasionally, but not very often.

If you were at 12 when it got taken away, you're at 12 when you start driving again.

dude writing about that stuff on a forum isnt a good idea. drifting on the street isnt a good idea either. you are 26 you should be more responsible. hell im 20 and i realized that the regular streets are the wrong place for this. keep it to the track you have way more practice and you will have even more fun!

^ You're dumb. He's not talking about drifting on the streets anymore. What it sounds like he wants to know about is registering the car non op then registering it again at a later time for use on the streets. If I had to guess, I'd say most people around here register their cars no op only because they're not legal to drive on the road, not because they've got a horrible driving record and don't want to pay $$ for it.

Like I said, I don't dick around, haven't in years. Just want to know if the majority of dudes with built drift cars go through the trouble of keeping them on the street. Honestly I'm really leaning towards just taking the thing off the road.

non op
Yeah pretty much. I couldn't find anything on NJDMV about this, is it a California thing? Something to keep the car "in the system" so if I change my mind at some point I can just change the reg? It seems like I would have a hell of a time putting it back on the street if I choose to at some point in the future if I simply failed to re-reg and insure the car, as penalties for lack of registration increase over time.

Don't some people learn their lesson?? It could have been 20 years ago for all I care, guess what? People like that contributed to our high insurance rates. I'm in the insurance industry and believe me every one of us with a clean driving record is having to pay a higher premium because of people like him. Not to mention the lives he put at risk. What if one day you or dear family member was driving down the road and here comes Mr. I Drift & Race So Im Cool and BAM, kills that innocent driver. OP:
if you seriously have no intent on driving this car anywhere else than the track then there is no point in all that shit
you could register it as a weekend car requirements are like under 10k miles a year or something
also depends if you have money for a tow for the events
weigh your options

Yeah, it makes sense. Towing isn't a problem either, I was waiting for stories of "I couldn't drive my car so when something broke it broke at the track and I spent a $200 track day fixing it" or some other odd situation. I'll have to look into non-op or limited reg for it. I have a bike too and it's awesome fun.

Erjay1--You're missing the point. The OP learned his lesson 7 years ago.. he just happens to still be paying for it. You blamed him for the fact that 240 owners have to pay higher rates, but back then it wasn't like it is now. There was hardly a scene, cops weren't out profiling import owners and I doubt insurance companies were too. If he had said that he was still being retarded, bash away. How would you like it if I tried to give you shit for your ticket? Since I haven't gotten a ticket in my car, it's everyone's fault but mine. And nobody here needs to be schooled on the effects of bad driving. wahh wahh

I feel the exact opposite. if your 240 is stock KA and close to stock suspension then thats one thing, but once you put SR, exhaust, coils, wheels, seat, harnesses, etc. in it, the joy of driving it on the street is COMPLETELY gone. Then its stressfull as fuck constantantly watching out for:
cops,
pot holes,
train tracks,
shit in the road,
SUV drivers that cant see you,
ricers trying to race you,
theives attention,
crummy lighting at night (i dont care if you have HID's dropped into your shit, still isint 1/5 as good as new cars light output)
Dont even get me started on parking it and going inside somewhere. Shit makes you nervous as fuck to know someone with a screwdriver and a broken spark plug can take your car in about 1 min flat.
Me? I'm so glad to have a truck and a trailer, my shit stays safe in the garage locked up with the windows up and alarm on, tires chocked, sometimes sitting on a jackstand in a nice neighborhood... Nothing makes me happier than driving a crappy ass truck that gets 13 mpg just to know shes home safe....

Why do you mod your car in a way that makes the joy of driving it go away?
The joy of driving it hard, drifting, or on the track has increased ten fold!
These cars suck on the street once you stiffen the fuck out of them. Which is what most of us do.
The 'Joy' has increased exponentially, try drifting a stock 240, then try with SR and coils, SO much better, more fun, more enjoyable.
If i wanted to joy on the streets, i'd buy a G37 or a Z... but 500 a month to me is better spent on tires, fuel, upgrades, rather than a fun to drive street car that will just get me into trouble.

^^^Yep got access to a truck and trailer, been using it for awhile now. Also picked up a beater single-cam for commuting.
For me it's all about riding off into the sunset with the windows down and the city skyline towering in the background. I can spend all night driving to random places. I know I could do that in any car, but it's just not the same.
This was really the only thing keeping it on the road for me. I would take it out for a cruise or a test drive before an event, maybe meet some friends at a diner, etc. Except the cruise consisted of clenching my teeth over bumps in the road, getting followed by cops, getting hassled by anyone with a sporty car and showing up where ever I went sweaty if it wasn't winter. Drift cars are really only fun when they're drifting.
The main thing that got me thinking about it was when I found out I still have all those points on my record. Basically any little thing could put me on the bus again, so why push my luck by attracting attention? I could re-insure it in a few years when it won't screw me out of my commute to work if a blinker doesn't work and I get a failure to give proper signal ticket. Or maybe I won't miss it and save myself some money, eh.

I once had 18 points on my license. As of right now it has come down to 9 (3 points off every year for 3 years), but that still means if I get a reckless or something similar, I could lose my license again, since it's an automatic penalty if you hit 12 points.
How does one person have EIGHTEEN points?
Don't they take your license away after like seven points?
Your points dont get removed when you come off of suspension...
If you were at 12 when it got taken away, you're at 12 when you start driving again.
every state has different laws, but i found myself in a similar situation here in Pa. i hit 18 (or a few more) points and lost my license (obviously) since it gets taken away at 6. when yo get your license restored in pa, you get it back at 5 points, meaning one more point and you lose it again. op, how many points before you lose your license in your state? the thing that doesnt make sense about getting your license back at however many points you lost it at means you still shouldn't have a license. ie- let's say you lost it at 12 and you get 3 points off a year, if you get it restored at 12, you'd have to go 4 years of not getting pulled over to get down to 0. lets say in your state you lose legally lose your license at 6 points, so if you got up to 12, after 2 years of no more tickets, you'd still be right where your license gets taken at.

Here in NJ you lose it at 12 automatically. When you get it back you have 12 and a year of probation, meaning any moving violation is another automatic suspension plus whatever points you earned. I got it back, proceeded to get another ticket and lost it again...four times total. I lost it once for not signaling, another time for 74 in a 55. It's a tough hole to get out of and a lot of times people never get out of it.

Sweet, I made a sig quote!
My plans when I return to the states would be to pick up a Cadillac with a tow hook and a dolly. A V8 Caddy has more than enough low end torque to tow a S13 or in my case, a Civic.
You can get Caddy's for pretty cheap. It's what I recommend.
Shit, I once towed a downed 180 60 some kilometers in my EG6

I almost got a tow dolly until I heard about the damage they can do to your transmission if you don't disconnect the driveshaft. That and it is a worry if you smash up the rear suspension. Full trailers aren't much more expensive, either. A place I went to had new dollies for $1750 and a full trailer for 2k even, so used they should be pretty close in price too. I use an 4.6 F150 with a tow package and a regular steel trailer with wood planks and it does the job, but anything smaller might be a pain for longer trips or hilly highways.
An aluminum trailer is an option, although they're twice the price of course. An open one will weigh around 900lbs (vs around 1700lbs for steel and wood), so if you're just towing a stripped out 240 you could probably get away with something like a Frontier or a Tacoma. Even the 4 cylinder model is rated to 3500lbs, although it might feel wobbly and unstable the whole time.

street drifting...keep it to a minimal. then again, my car is flashy enough where i dont need the extra attention. my previous s14, i had a guy jump off of his seat outside of a bar and say " dooood is that a 240?!?!" i said "yeah it is." he said "drift that corner." this was in downtown, lots of people around, and lots of curbs. i said no and said why, but i did do a little burn out for him and he screamed in joy. nothing good can come from street drifting. whether people consider my car a drift car or what i do, an all around street performance vehicle, if i want to drift i keep it on the track or go to a very secluded place. my car is a daily driver.

roman, are you talking about the English town track?
well anyway i live in dirty jersey too, and my s14 stands out a bit so i do get some attention from the local cops. and not for speeding, like last week i got pulled over in a wawa parking lot for not having a front plate....while i was still parked. my point is i understand about NJ's nazi cops and Nazi inspection. if you feel you cant pass inspecion and think cops are going to hassle your hot rod, take it off the road and build a nasty drift machine. but at the same time, remember NJ cops will pull you over in any car for breaking one little law so sometime it doesnt matter what you drive

Yeah cops here can be a real pain when they want to. I like to think I'm pretty low key, but I still get stopped once and awhile. They'll say I was swerving or rolled through a red and ask if I've been drinking or some other bs. I just follow the procedure, keep my hands out the window where they can see em, don't reach for paperwork until he is at the window and I get let go with no trouble. When I drove the drift car I would get all kinds of cowboys pulling me over too, making up shit about a car "matching my description" involved in a robbery or something. What a joke.
But yeah...Englishtown...can't wait to get back on that road course. Two day events are gonna be intense.
