View Full Version : A/F gauge install? Who's done it?

Got my crappy autometer A/F Gauge today (yeah I know it's pretty lacking, but it was cheap and I needed something to figure out my fuel problem)...
in any event, I guess I have to hook it to my O2 sensor where it goes into the ECU... I was just wondering who's done this, and where the optimal point to splice in would be? Also what hot wire did you tap for the power? Admittedly I haven't looked at my FSM yet, but I figure it might be much easier seeing who's done thing before so I don't make it harder than it needs to be (which I have a nasty habit of doing). :D
Eventually I'll get a better A/F gauge, any recommendations?
edit: this is for my SR powered 240 btw :)

me and my friends did it on a ka24de, and we just spliced it right before the actual sensor in the header, it works great
on the SR20DET ecu, the 02 Sensor wire is wire #19 (White)
I have diagrams here but I don't have a scanner.

where ever you splice it it'll be fine. I had an autometer on my old kaslow. did nothing for me though:D cycled back and forth went to rich when I stomped it. most worthless gauge i've ever bought. Even the crappy a/f meter on my apexi tt worked better.
Either way I'd reccomend getting one with it's own o2 sensor ala greddy or such.

Is that what makes the other so expensive? cuz they have their own sensor? autometer has a sensor you can get too, I was wondering about that. :/
I got this meter to help diagnose why my car is guzzling fuel, but maybe this meter is a waste of time?

the more $ ones are also more delecate and normaly can send multiples singles so it can communicate with a stand alone fuel system. i got a cheapo a/f under my hood, its for tuning purposes only =)
The problem with A/F meters is that the O2 sensor varies according to the temperature it's at. And to combien that, the Autometer A/F has only 3 or so leds to display the important voltage of the a/f reading. Basically, it's not precise at all.. You're better off with a voltmeter.
Essentially, the best a/f gauge is a wideband o2 sensor, but they don't go around for cheap. :)

They also have a very short life. Dyno shops charge for the O2 sensor because it is something that they replace often.

an EGT gauge is a nice compromise.

Actually, EGT are good when combined with other tools. I've got and EGT myself. In order to give accurate readings, the EGT must be in the hottest runner.
I've also heard that when you get extremely rich or lean, EGT values are not really accurate anymore. That is why you'd have to combine it with a good a/f reading.
