View Full Version : sealing semi warped exhaust flange?

A while back I snapped an exhaust mani stud. One closest to the dizzy. Ive tried for about 2 months to get that sucker out, the threads are gone, the hole is untapable.
I have a leak on cylinder 1 which hath made my car nearly undriveable.
Has anybody double stacked gaskets, or used some copper RTV/hondabond with decent success on a snapped stud?
I have a spare head, however reading the FSM, its almost looking over my head to swap all the internals into the other head.

Not sure but I don't think rtv will do anything for it. Have you ever tried the bolt extractors?

yes, ive used the reverse drill bit, sears bolt extractors (box type)
There is a sliver/half moon of the stud left, about 2mm inside the head....
the stud is in there, there will be no way to get it out. so im on to other options.

IMO there isn't going to be any way to seal it without somehow getting another sutd in there. I was in somewhat the same situation as you. I broke the stud closest to the firewall when I was tightening the nut. I was not about to pull my whole turbo setup and maybe even the head to extract it. I had a 3 layer metal gasket from the 01 sentra 2.0L.
Just a couple weeks ago I started some maintainance on my car and pulled a lot of stuff off including the turbo. Turns out the heat from the exhaust actually weakened the gasket and broke it and definately was leaking. RTV may help but I think there will be some sort of leak still.
During my maintenance I pulled the head and used a left hand drill bit and punch in extractor. It worked beautifully. The most important thing is to use a good penetrating oil and use a hammer to knock loose the stress that is keeping it from breaking loose.
Just curious, is this a sr or ka you are working on?

yeah that wont work. your a long ways from me so you cant come to my shop... but i know if you take it to a GOOD welding shop they can TIG weld onto the bolt that is stuck inside and if they are experienced at all use a pair of vise grips and penetrating oil to get it out. wouldnt take long if they have any idea what they are doing

kind of a noob question, but how difficult is it to swap all my head internals to another bare head? mostly worried about the valves

its ideal to match the valves with the head. If you put your current valves on your spare head, you could possibly run into leakage through the valve seat. Basically the valve wears to that particular seat. You probably will see this on higher mileage engines and if there is any leakage, it should be very minimal if its a healthy head.
As far as swapping everything, its not hard to me. I've already rebuilt a sr head twice and ka heads are almost the same.

Well the spare head does have valves, however I wouldnt know if they;re still good. Would submerging the head in soapy water ruin anything? ive had the head submerged, also soaked the crap out of it with pbblaster and lime away.
