it's always kind of been a pipe dream of mine to open up a bar. like dive bar drinks but with a cool atmosphere and a lot of Radiohead and Cake. a place where you can get a 40 of Colt45 in a koozie for like 8 bucks.

anybody ever run a bar/restaurant? anybody ever get a business loan? anybody ever rent a retail location and deal with liquor licenses or zoning or insurance or any of that stuff?

isnt it a tough time right now? people with no jobs/money to go to bars.. people easily drop anywhere from $50 bucks and up in a night i think

My wife's uncle owns a bar in huntington beach. He has done bars/restaurants all his life in socal. Its tough to do. Its a pizza place and a bar right by 24hour fitness and when times are slow, it is reallllly hard. But he is his own boss, he works about 3 days a week, golfs the rest. Any profit goes to him, but he is the manager and everything, so when things go bad they go bad. He just got the new one after his old place had to be shut down and he was jobless for 7 months, and yea that sucks.

So I guess all in all, it is a badass job when you are successful. If you place fails then you are screwed.

I can tell you that utah is the shittiest place to decide to get a liquor license.

since utah is 1,000,00% mormons

the easiest place to get a liquor license is Nevada (specifically clark county souther nevada AKA las vegas)

many family friends own restaurants with liquor license and its dirt cheap compared to other states

saint louis is incredibly cheap for liquor licenses. a year's 3am license (instead of 1:30) would be right around a grand.

Radiohead and Cake.

I'd be there in a heartbeat.

But now is definitely not the time. My friends dad owns a bar and business is definitely hurting. I thought people would go out and pound regardless but that is definitely not the case. Now that I think about it its not exactly a "young folks" bar, but i would hold off for a while.

^ its not all like that.

My family does business with robertos taco shops

(san diego and Las Vegas)

on average, they sell around 2 grand a day

and hey its dirt cheap to open one up in vegas. with 40 or 50 K they give you the a franchise with the rent too

I know only one guy who has moved away and went to Utah, he's Mormon.

thats food though, more a necessity than a bar.
Bar can be more of a luxury, and people have been cutting back on luxury

going out to eat is also somewhat of a luxury.
I read somewhere that the profit margin and overall profitability of selling alcohol is much higher than that of food in general.
also in bad times, business serving alcohol (liquor stores and/or bars, i forget) do well.

My parents just opened a wine bar in Reno and Business is GREAT, it's actually kind of strange how well it has done since it opened about 4 months ago, considering most of what they sell is expensive wine. I think about 80% of a bar's success can be attributed to it's location and the atmosphere. If you do something different and make your bar more than just a place to get drunk you can be successful even when the economy isn't doing so well. Good luck!

not really bar/restaurant related but I've always wanted to open up a 24 hour cigarette drive-thru. There is one that I know of and it is always backed up with customers all day and night. Anyone want to open up with me? :P

I helped my family with our restaurant we opened in 1966. I ran it from 1994-1998. We didn't serve drinks and were located by a National Park.

I can help you out with a business plan if you like, I do that for a living (well, in my second job with Brooks Wilson Professional Legal Services). Let me know if you want to talk.

i ran a restaurant/bar with my aunt a few years back...
its fun. bt its alot of work. and u have to work with people that u trust.
to make profit. we would clean the place our selfs. go buy the drink/food ourselfs. i would cook the fast stuff. while the cook did the rest more complicated plates. my aunt will do the waitress part. my uncle the bar. worked out pretty good. Game days where pretty good also.

btw for those who say the way the economy is rite now. look at how many ppl spend money going to see football games. concerts. malls are still packed. people still go to clubs bars..

i could have a 40 list instead of a wine list. keep a bunch of 8 ball and colt on hand, and then just two or three of the less desirable 40's. who would buy King Cobra, seriously

I've seen those on the east coast, but they were called beverage barns.
I'm in the process of trying to open a bar and it's alot of work. Also be prepared to have $$$$ on hand cause getting a business loan isn't exactly easy even with great credit.
Also the liquor license can be quite costly (at least in SoCal).

liquor license here is under a thousand dollars for the year. cash in hand, that's an issue.
