I was just wondering if a 92 240sx VLSD will fit in a 1989 240sx pumpkin? So in other words is the pumpkin from a 92 240sx different from a 89 240sx pumpkin?

No, case is exactly the same. But you will need VLSD output shafts if you don't have them.

Its the same pumpkin, but the USDM pumpkin comes with 6-bolt axles, and the JDM pumpkin (VLSD) comes with 5-bolt axles. Nothing needs to be modified to swap them, just need to have all the correct parts.

I love when people wreck threads.
JDM or US isn't the issue here, the output shafts are different between VLSD and open diffs. You can't put a VLSD into an open diff case and use the open diff output shafts with modifying them, which the OP is more than likely not capable of doing.
Sure, the axles are different on earlier JDM models, but since the OP has already established both units are US sourced, the 6bolt vs. 5bolt dilemma doesn't matter.

i am assuming that you only have the vlsd pumpkin with no axles. if so i'm not sure if you can use your axles (half shafts or output shafts) i never ran into this problem but you can try i believe you can just use the vlsd pumpkin and just change the diff cover. Then try and put your half shafts in to see if they will work if not then you're going to have to get the 5 bolt half shafts.

Incorrect. The cover is the same for all 89-94 models. Doesn't have to be swapped. The axles can be used as well as all 89-94 axles are the exact same. JDM axles on early models are indeed 5bolt, but we've been over that. The output shafts are what is different between VLSD and open diffs, and no amount of trying to make them fit will get anywhere.

see, the shafts have to get turned by the new carrier, and the vlsd carrier will not turn the open diff shafts.
Now the big thing is, vlsd's suck anyways.
