I just got my bike (81 Yamaha Virago. It was free. ;) ) over the weekend and one of the things I'd like to do right away is get different handlebars.
I like the look of older street bikes with low handlebars and an over all low look. Kinda like this.

I honestly know jack sh*t about motorcycles and have no idea if I can change mine or not, or what feels like what, etc etc.

You can. Most have simple bolts holding em in, but you gotta make sure the new bars have the right recesses in em. Otherwise, they'll keep moving for days.
I wish i could have a cafe racer. SO damn legit.
Cafe Racer > Street Bike.
theres a guy on youtube, Carpy1 i think, that does restorations on em.

Nice I always wanted to build a honda CB500 into a cafe racer. CLUBMAN BARS are good. Check ebay for parts. I am not sure with the Yamaha maybe theres parts on there. Make sure you know that the body work cost more than the bike haha. If you change all that should be around 2-4k MAX.

cafe's are so sick, ill be picking one up soon as a restoration project. but on the other hand, turning a newer bike like an sv650 into a street fighter is another tempting idea. both have their pluses.

sadly not many bikes at all on that forum.. its mostly cars with no aftermarket .. cavaliers, domestics, a few imports, mostly rice, but some of these guys get creative and do good work despite having different tastes. But some good build ups on there, stuff that will make you motivated and want to work on your own stuff.

I have allways loved the older Japanese bikes. But I found a 2003 Suzuki Savage for $2,000. I jumped on it. I had heard they were a good beignner bike. SInce then i've swapped out the Handle bars, tailight, all turn signals and am going to work on chopping the rear fender soon. Goal in mind i a cafe racer style bike.
This is my 1st and only bike and everything has been super easy to modify. If I can do it...I know anyone can.

Started the tear down today. Found out a couple things. The custom subframe isn't going to be as hard as I thought really. And the tank needs to be adjusted to make it sit more parallel to the ground. It's gonna be some work, but I'm pretty excited about it.

Of course, if you have $25k, you can just get a turnkey CB750 Cafe from WhiteHouse:

Ok moving along slowly but surely.
I got the tank off. i couldn't figure out how it came off last week when I worked on it. There's some rust on the inside so I'm gonna have to remove that. luckily Yamaha makes a two step product that's only $15 that will remove it all.
I also just bought the foam to start shaping for the seat like in the fiberglass forum tutorial that HyperTek posted. We need to lower the front first though so i can see how everything sits.
My friend Adam can hopefully do the welding of the new custom rear subframe and the back of the tank.
You can see int he pics below I have the tank tilted not so the pitch of it is more horizontal instead of pitched upwards. I just have it sittong on something right now and will have to fab something to secure it.

I've seen quite a few "street fighter" style conversions...i liek them, but don't love all the exposed wiring that i saw on the conversions. Stick with the cafe style imo. I like the look of it better. Plus I like older bikes and the styling behind them. Something about removing fairings and body parts from a sport bike just makes them look naked...
exitspeed
03-20-2009, 06:37 AM
I did some research yesterday and it's not really Street Fighter style. Street Fighters are made from sport bikes. You start with a sport bike and then strip it all down. Remove fairings, etc to make it look more aggressive.
So technically it's not a street fighter.
A Cafe Racer is a cruiser type bike (which is what the Virago is) that has been stripped down and modified for speed and good handling rather than comfort.
I think what is confusing about the green one pictured is the tail on it is sorta sport bike-ish looking instead of the more round "bullet" looking tail that is traditionally found on Cafe's.
Update on my bike. A friend of mine said he would do the welding of the subframe for me. I just gotta purchase some metal.
Clip-ons look like they run $119-$180. I think I'll go with the $119 ones as they look pretty decent and this is kind of a budget build at this point.

People in the States build bikes like CB750 as a cafe racer but you know in Europe they prefer british bikes like Norton. This whole thing started in England so I would go with some ride like Triumph. And yeah,no sportbike for this style.

street fighters are just busted up sport bikes with no fairings and jackoff riders who like to do wheelies. you'll also often find them driving pontiacs or various suv's covered in decals that say stuff like "RIP such and such 1988-2008, wheelied faster than his angels could fly"

I think it has less to do with the bike customization, and more to do with dumbass in the seat. The same way I absolutely hate being associated with the dumb mother fuckers out there who think it is acceptable behavior to drift on public streets, I'm sure the guys who build their bikes to carve corners don't like to be associated with the idiots riding down the freeway on their rear tire alone.
In other words, let us not stereotype based on modifications. In fact, let us strive not to stereotype at all.
P.S. Mel, cool build. This is fun to watch, and if I rode a bike, I could see myself doing something very similar. :rawk:

Remove the engine and tank, strip the shit out of it until you have a bare frame. Clean that beast up and paint with high temp black. not gloss black either. You've got to give it that matte color.

Yea, my roommate was obsessed with street fighter style bikes. That's how I heard of them. He owned a Honda CB...something that was pretty quick...he totally trashed me when I picked up my Suzuki Savage 650 and started "upgrading" and customizing it. Said it was a waste, now I get more looks on it than any normal 90's sport bike or stereotype Harley.
Moral of the story is: Keep up with the build, build it to what you want and you will never be dissapointed. Just make sure you cover all the wires up...I hate expose wires on chopped/bobbed bikes. Just looks tacky. And you can never have too much chrome imo so bling it up :) (with a dash of matte black)

my opinion on streetbike riders is heavily influenced by a local "team" of douchebags called "Streetfighterz". they make videos and shirts and decals and sell them at the mall and stuff. and yeah, one of their videos is some guy wheelie-ing down the highway with no front wheel.

Some moar updates.
Decided today to drop it 2.5 inches. I have NO CLUE if it's the right way to do it or not, but in my head it made sense. If it turns out that it's wrong I can always correct it. Basically I just removed the handlebars (which are going away in favor of clip-ons anyway) and then loosed the forks from the triples tree (I think that's what it's called) and pushed the triple tree down. I might even go another .5" or so if this is an acceptable way to do it.
I also got he foam that I'll be using to make the seat form. It's not going to site exactly like that obviously but that gives you an idea sorta.

like fishboy said, i think all those bikes besides that Steve Carpenter bike are "cafe' inspired".
Norton, Triumph, BSA would be true cafe's to me, with certain models of japanese bikes being able to pull off the true cafe style

Yeah they are cafe inspired. It's just a style. I personally like the Green Yamaha better then the ones you posted anyway. I'm not too concerned with authenticity. I just wanna build a cool bike and use some cafe inspiration.

Some more slow progress.
I took the handle bars mostly off. I couldn't get the grip off the left side so I couldn't get that stuff off so they are just hanging there.
I started thinking that instead of straigh copying the green bike I might do something different. I was thinking of somehow modifying the stock seat and rear subframe. In these pics I have the subframe bolted on at the top of the frame and then swung up a little to make the tank and seat area sit more flat instead of racked like it is stock.
I'm going to have to make the tank shorter to get it to fit the way it is.
The stock seat doesn't look that bad on there actually now that all the clutter shit is off.
Oh and I took off the crash bar in the front. I think that's what people call it. I also took off the yamaha badges on the tank. I'll just fill those in.

I put the tank back on to it's stock postion as well as the seat. I think it looks good. It's maybe not a straight up Cafe but it it's definitely stripped down. When I sit on it it looks real low too and that's really the look I originally wanted.

Cool seat, non-gay wheels, bars, painted tank, done.
I'm working on the seat right now. The vinyl that was on it was cracked. I took that off and now it's just the foam. I'm gonna use a turkey carving knife to shape the seat differently. It'll be narrower and lower and the step won't be as high.
For the handle bars I'm getting clip-ons. Since I lowered the front by lowering the triple tree (which is a perfectly ok way to do it) the handle bars don't fit in the clamps. I want clip ons anyway. Woodcraft makes'em in m size. Like these:
https://www.woodcraft-cfm.com/ProdImages/1stpage_clipons.png
Tank'ill get painted soon. Just gotta fill in the area where the emblems were.
The exhaust is rusty as shit. I'm working on grinding that all off too. Then I'll be painting it with like high temp engine paint and then heat tape wrapping it.
It's definitely coming along though.

Check check check.
I'm hunting for new front and rear signals and a new brake light. LED's more then likely.
I'm not sure about the horns. But probably.
The Yamaha plate has fuses behind it. I might think about just filling it in so it doesn't say Yamaha but I'm not sure if I can move it all together. I'm not a big electrical guy.

I was not planning in it, no. I'm sure it'll make for a dustier ride. I have to do some searching to see what kinda fender would look good on there that is Cafe Inspired.
New pics of the seat progress. Shit is looking waaay better. I finally found the right tool for the job. I tried a bread knife, a hand sander (not an orbital one though), sandpaper by itself, and a wire wheel. Then I see my Wagner Paint Eater sitting there and decide to try that. BINGO. Not only does it take off a lot of material if you want it to, it can be very precise also. It also smoothed out the whole thing very nice. I'm pretty sure this will be the final shape. I'm thinking about cutting the lower half of the seat/plastic to make it more flat instead of that curved look. But for the seat part it's pretty much what I was lookin for.

First thing is I had to fill in the area on the tank where the Yamaha emblem was. There was a clipy thing that the emblem screwed on to.
First I mixed up some Mar-Glass which I've never used before. Some pretty interesting stuff. It's like hard candy before it gets hard.

Got the tank sanded down nice and smooth. Needs some more work but it's about 80% there.

Then those lights dangling were bothering me as well as the two big ol horns and front turn signals. Removed those.

I think that would make a huge difference since the tank still sits at a slant.

Moar progress.
I'm getting close to being finished filling in the area on the tank. Needs a little more work but it's getting there. It's primered gray in the pic. I hung it from a tree to make it easier to paint.
http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/7577/img7622.jpg
Worked at the seat moar. I think the main problem was how the bottom of it swepted downward. It really threw it off. So I chopped that up and made it straight. There's some more finishing work to make it perfect though. And once the vinyl is over it you won't see anything. I'm not worried about the space between the frame. I'll either leave it or fill it with something minimal.

Here's the tank and seat together as a whole.

Cool. In the next two weeks I'm planning on doing the paint on the tank, getting rims, and the clip ons. Hopefully soon there will be pics of me on the thing.
I'm really happy with the positive feedback I've gotten from the work I've done. I've posted on a couple other websites and everyone has been really stoked about my progress. All my friends are really looking forward to me finishing it up so I can come riding with them.

Rims are getting painted for sure. If you look at them the area that is silver will be matte black and then the rest will be gloss black.

The bike would not have ran the way the carbs were. Things were all stuck and clogged up.
I also changed the oil.
I also bought some vinyl to wrap the seat in. Got a great deal on a bunch from the fabric store. I'm not that great at upholstering so we'll see how that turns out.
I'm hopin things will start wrappin up in the next couple weeks. Slowly but surely.

Guess I didn't even think about ABS on a bike. Shit is all still new to me.
Made some more progress. I used KREEM to get rid of the rust in my gas tank and recoat it. It's like a brand new tank now. It turned out great.
Got my throttle, and clutch hooked back up and operating properly.
I also got all the new gaskets on the carbs and put that back.
Took the mirrors off today and it looks 10x more rad. Fuck it. I'm going sans the mirrors. Might not be the safest thing but it just looks dope.
Unfortunately I'm not getting any power even though I put a new battery in. Soooo, I have a call into an electrician guy I know who is a genius when it comes to wiring shit ad actually enjoys diagnosing and rectifying issues like this. I hope to get him over ASAP.
In the mean time this week my plans are:
-Remove the rims and paint them
-Possibly have the new Pirellis mounted.
-Sandblast exhaust and order heat wrap
-Grind off the rust around the rim of the gas tank on the outside (just minor surface rust)
-PAINT THE TANK THE FINAL COLOR!
-I'd like to get to upholstering the seat, but I'm kinda dreading it

My current bike has a front brake but I still ride my buddies which just has a rear drum. I have no problem riding a bike with just a rear brake just know that if the shit hits the fan, you most likely wont stop in time, and will die. That honestly doesn't bother me.
What bothers me, is no mirrors. I ran one day without mirrors and it drove me crazy. I hate not knowing what is behind me. Every last one of them behind the wheel are retardedcellphonetextingnonpayingattentionmorons.
Fuck blinkers
Fuck horns
Fuck gauges
Strongly suggest mirrors. You can find small good looking ones.
Ok. I get it. I can see how that would make me paranoid too. I'll try to find some I like.
How about these?

Picatars s promised.
Been getting to work on this SOB! Now that I got my job back I need a ride so I'm trying to wrap this bad boy up.
First things first. Like I said I used the KREEM stuff to take care of the rust in the tank. You can see the shit in there in these pics and around the fill spout. That is completely gone now and all sealed up.

http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/4805/img7794i.jpg
Yesterday I started painting the wheels. Yeah I'm half ass rattle canning it, but it's good enough for now. I'm thinking I'll powder coat'em over winter.
Here's the ugly bastard stock.
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/2140/img7834q.jpg
Just with some degreaser it looks better.
http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/6266/img7835z.jpg
Primed it. Looks better already.
http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/1861/img7837.jpg
Few coats later.
http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/945/img7838d.jpg
My next step was to paint the lip flat black. I wanted a two tone flat and gloss black for the wheels. Just to add a lil som som. It was good leaving the old tires on. Saved me from having to mask off the tire.

http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/7743/img7848r.jpg
I spent a bunch of time on the tank, but I'm not happy with the finish. I used different paint then I normally use for flat/sating flat paint and it just turned out a lil blotchy. I'm gonna redo it tomorrow so more pics of that coming then. It's primed and ready to go though.
http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/8373/img7841.jpg
Again like I said, I wasn't getting any power to anything. Had an electrical guru guy I know come over and trouble shot stuff and BAM! POWA! I can tell it wants to just fire up. I don't have the petcocks on the tank yet though so I couldn't fire it up. I will be getting then on tomorrow and it's getting fired up. There's still no exhaust so it should be a lotta fun!

Working on getting it running right now. I'm running into some issues and trying to work them out. Seems the carbs are being a bitch. Which sucks because we tore them down completely and cleaned the hell out of them. Turns out this year Virago has some issues as far as carbs go. I guess back in the day Yamaha was replacing the carbs for people under warranty because they had some serious issues witht hem getting gummed up.
I got it running and it idles. Whats happening is, if you cover the intake and starve the engine for air it runs great. You can rev it up fine. It pops somewhat but it runs. By starving the engine for air it sucks up the gas and makes the engine run rich.
So basically I'm working through shit right now. Hopefully I can figure it out this weekend.

Lol. I have this thread posted on a Virago forum and more people are complaining about the size of the pics then giving feedback. :duh:
So I changed the thread title to say "56k NO! LARGE PICS INSIDE!" and people are still complaining. They want me to post smaller pics. I've posted almost 60 pics. I'm not gonna go change all those pics. PITA.

Seriously...I was just threatened to be banned because I won't change the pic size. Funniest shit I've heard all week. All the mods are in their late 50's and 60's.
I told the mod "If it's not a rule I don't see how you can threaten to ban me." And also " if it's that big of a deal have the admin change the max pic settings in the admin cp panel that will automatically resize large pic."
We'll see if he thinks I'm just "sassin back".
Haha, funny ass shit. Where are you hosting the pics? Maybe you can use the thumbnail feature where it shows a small pic and if you click it it'll take you to a larger version.

I'm going to wrap the exhaust in heat wrap after I sand blast it and paint it.
How much heat wrap do you guys think I need to wrap the pipes from the engine to where the mufflers are (where the exhaust gets wider)?
Any brands or places you guys know that would be good to order from would be good too.
Here's a good shot of the exhaust for size reference.

Watch out some of that stuff is nasty. Most are glass with a vermiculite binder. But, some of the cheap shit is organic crap.
You only want to do it once. Get the good shit:
ACCEL Motorcycle :: Product Details (http://www.accel-motorcycle.com/ProductDetails.aspx?modelNumber=2002BK&productID=7004&majID=675&minID=6763&selection=0&minselection=8)
Soak it in water and wrap it like plaster casting. Use the braiding as a spacing guide. Wrap it tight. Should dry rock hard. I've hit mine tons of times and it's got dents in the metal but it took a long time to break the wrap.

go to harborfrieght for metal zip ties (i forget its like $4 or so) as opposed to exhaust wrap ties.
I did some ebay wrap on my old benz, just standard white color or whatever. They will discolor after use, and stain if you get like oil or something on them. I suppose you should probably spray something on top of it? i dunno i just wrapped it and that was it.

I've been working on it and there has been some progress but nothing exciting. I still can't get it to stay running. I've had the carbs out and cleaned thoroughly 2 times.
Actually tonight I'll hopefully be fixing the last of the electrical issues and wrapping the exhaust and putting that back on. I did sand blast the exhaust so there's no more rust. It's not in the best shape, but it's fine for now.
More pics soon.

So until i can get the title for it and what not its going to sit in the garage getting tinkered with.
Right now im also having issues with the carbs (tri carb setup) so im in the process of finding a rebuild kit for them and getting rid of the nasty huge stock box, and going with an ITB mini filter setup.
be nice when i get some different handle bars so i can lower the front forks some more. looks to tall in the front IMO ...eh, it'll get there.

Some quick updates. Visually the bike is coming together. I sandblasted the exhaust, then painted it with heat resistant grill paint (it won't last forever but I'm not expecting it to), then wrapped it with black exhaust wrap, and then finally put it back on.
Got some other misc stuff (new brake lever ((it was broken)), etc etc)
I'm still having issues getting it to run. But hopefully soon. I'm still pluggin away at it. I should have a nice appreciation for this POS when it's done.

Things should start moving forward pretty quick now I hope. Turns out the battery I just bought was bad. So I took it back and they are replacing it under warranty. I know it's partly because the bike isn't actually running and just draining the battery.
So hopefully I can get it running soon.

Turns out the new battery I bought is dead. I returned it and got a new one. Put it on and the bike started up. It ran for about 4 seconds and died.
So now I need to sync the carbs and get it tuned. Hopefully that will be the end of the BS.
Things left to do:
-Upholster seat
-Install turn signals and brake light
-Buy and install Mirrors
-Have the new Pirelli's mounted
-Clean the ish out of the whole bike
-Learn how to ride a bike! lol.

As far as the battery dying, you don't have a battery tender/charger? Probably a good idea, especially since you don't live in paradise, and won't be riding the bike once a week all year-round.
