Just a quick note, Ive changed out trannys in my schools parking lot, changed timing belts, replaced head gaskets and rebuilt a few motors in my friends garage, but for the life of me I cant get the starter off of my dang auto S13.

Ive purchased swivel sockets and extensions, but no luck. Ive taken off the heater hoses and most tubing but I still cant get good leverage on the bolt on the upper backside of the starter.

I read on here where people are taking off their starter in 10-12 minutes and it makes me feel a bit inferior, haha. So please, please zilvia, can someone give me advice on how to take off this dang starter for an auto (I say auto because the automatics dip stick is somewhat in the way of the bolt, where I assume 5 spds dont have this problem).

Also, the inhibitor switch on an auto, where about is this dang thing? Im pretty certain its causing my car not too start. Another quick question, Im thinking I might have to run constant power to the ignition wire on the starter to get this thing to fire. In doing so, will I have to have the key turned all the way in the ignition cylinder to get it to fire (I guess have a friend in the car turning the key, and myself connecting the batter to the starter)? Or will having the key in the ON position start the car just fine also?

Thanks guys, you all have been very helpful in the past.

The inhibitor switch is mounted to the side of the transmission right near the dipstick inlet on the passenger side. It's an all in one piece that signals all gear positions.

To make it easier, put a jack under the tail end of the transmission and remove the crossmember, allowing the transmission to drop down a few inches in the rear. This will give you some more room up top to gain access to the top bolt. Jack it back up when you're done and reinstall the crossmember.

projectRDM, is there a way to bypass this inhibitor switch??

also, what about hotstarting the car by running the ignition wire on the starter straight to the positive terminal on the battery...would i have to have the key turned all the way in the ignition cylinder, or just to the ON position? I only ask just in case I get stuck in a parking lot or what not. Thankyou sir for your responce..

You can bypass it under the hood just as you would do a manual transmission swap, take the two large gauge wires in the top plug and connect them together. It will now start in any gear position, so make sure it's in neutral.

projectRDM, are you talking about hotwiring the starter or bypassing the inhibitor switch? And if you talking about hotwiring do I have to have the key in the ignition cylinder turned all the way, as if i were starting the car, or do I just need to have it in the ON position? Again thankyou for your help

It's the same thing, the inhibitor switch breaks contact of the starter solenoid lead. By bypassing it you're disabling any interaction with the transmission gear selector. If you're looking to 'hotwire', actually start the car with a key, you would still need to jump positions at the ignition switch as well.

I honestly can't understand what you're doing though.

Gotya, Ok I guess now my only question is what '2 large guage' wires do I connect together to bypass the inhibitor switch?
