Yeah, I figured that this belong in the chat instead of tech. But just curious, what kinda of sound systems do y'all bump? Cus Im looking for a basic one, I dont want a big ass sub or nothing, just decent speakers and tweeters.

Preferably for S13 but I'd love to hear what S14's are rocking too.

No worries, I know how busy life can get. I am very excited to see final product, and better yet can't wait hear the difference. My ghetto set up needs to go soon. I can't wait to get my trunk back. More trunk space is always a plus!

I like tweets in the A-pillars myself. Replacing A pillars is much cheaper/easier than finding new door panels, as I'm finding with my S13.

My system isn't the best but better than stock, Audiobahn 2-10's in custom enclosures, 2-Audiobahn MD6 mib bass drivers in the rear deck, 2-3-way Audiobahn 6.5 up front. Pair of Orions to drive the subs and 4 channel for the rest. Kole 2.5 Farad capacitor, couple of Audiobahn distribution blocks.

very nice install.. but audiobahn makes me cry :( and orion makes me happy

hapas13.. with enough patience and know how to make a stencil outline of the tweeter then using a jig to cut it out; you can do it; pm me if you have questions

ixfxi.. yea I feel you on the door panel thing.. I wanted to make kick pods for components but that would leave a hole in my panel and I couldnt find any so that was the end of the kick pod project :(

in my s14 i have:
Alpine deck w/ ipod cable
x2 Memphis Audio 6.5 Speakers in doors
x2 Rockford Fosgate 6x9's in rear

Sounds good to me, i want to get rid of the Rockford 6x9's and get some new memphis audio 6x9's for the rear, and maybe get a 8 or 10" sub so i can feel it a lil more but thats it...

No pics but around 1990 my buddy got a champagne hatchback...his dad was a car dealer.

We were allowed to strip the audio as long as we detailed the car and replaced things with stock / OEM equivalent.

It had some ads plate speakers up front and ads amps, then he had the whole hatcharea replaced with 4 subs (I think by Harrison or G&S, maybe the sub amp was that)...it also had a secret compartment behind the seats that we could use.

SQ was not in his vocabulary....but the shit would pound and tickle the fuck out of chicks.

the funniest part of that car was one day he was banging some chick his parents FORBID him to see in a hotel. Somehow an incident happened with a crane that torn something off the roof that cremated his car. He got busted. His next ride was a more civilized BMW 3 series.

i guess i should have listed my setup.

in the s13's stereo prime, it had:

-Pioneer head unit (some old chunk of shit circa 2000)
-MB Quart 6.5 comps in the doors
-Rockford 6x9's in the hatch cover
-2 12" Diamond CM3's

the mids were never amped, which was a juvenile mistake. the Diamonds were my second set of 12's after a pair of Alpine E series powered by some crappy Pioneer amp. the Diamonds were pushed with a Phoenix Gold Tantrum 1200.1, which had papers showing a 1400 watt peak. i don't have a clue what RMS was or where i had it set, but that thing was a beast.

i haven't had subs in forever, and probably will never have more than a single 10 or 12 ever again, and definitely not in the 240.

the 240's new setup will consist of:

-Pioneer head unit (currently have a 6800UB in my Acura, it's a possibility)
-6.5's in the doors, not sure what. anybody ever use Crystals?
-6.5's or 6x9's crammed into the stock location with hacked up mounting plates.
-a beefy Hifonics 4 channel amp.

druthafoo

phoenix gold tantrum 1200.1!? Man, I've always wanted one of those. You know your RMS was probably 1400 not the max bc those can push the RMS of 1200 at least at 1 ohm. Well Im pretty sure that was right.

That set up you were speaking of.. with a 6.5s in front with either 6.5s in rear or 6x9s is pretty good. Just get quality stuff, install properly, and will sound fine for a sub-less set up.

I used Crystals dude if you saw my post earlier; they went out of business (Im pretty sure) but their gear is still floating around.

I run the Crystal SSCS6 components; can't beat em for the money.

I have MB quarts 6.5's all around and im running a Kenwood KSC-SW10 sub\amp set up!! Not the best system i've evered installed my self but its good for what I need. Keeping weight down for autoX.

I do have a questing for you guys, how do you guys do the main power for the amp?! Did you run it through the firewall? Did you drill a hole? run it with the steering column?? Let me know if you can pm me a picture that would be even more awesome!! Thankx!!

alkemyst
03-27-2009, 06:41 PM
I ran 0/1 for a rear battery mainly...I drilled in the passenger side firewall pretty close to where the wire would come down that side...in hindsight the grommet right there could have handled this probably. It definitely will handle 4 gauge easily.

I don't know why you'd want to try for the steering column, not that I have built any major audio systems in a car though.

*EDIT*...if you do drill, it's really easy with a small hole saw if it has a pilot bit...when you drill expect a very powerful twist at some point when it grabs the firewall mat.

I broke a 1/4" drill bit as my pilot bit and luckily didn't damage anything when I hit that. It was my really good bit :(

Crutchfeild seems to be a good basic place to look up info
Crutchfield: LCD TV, Car Audio, Home Theater, Speakers, Plasma TV (http://www.crutchfield.com/)
would recommend to shop around for more competitive pricing though.

with my 240, just have an alpine hu w/ an ipod cable for now.
I have either stock or really crappy aftermarket speakers from my car's previous owner.

I like listening to rock & pop.
don't need too much bass, but like some.

about to install new infiniti 6020cs components in the front,
w/ cheapskate alpine SPS-600 2-ways in the rear.
rockford fosgate 4 way t600-4 amp to power the speakers (4x100rms @ 4ohms).
plus an infiniti basslink 250w powered sub.

really tempted to get a nicer set of components for the front & throw the Infinits in the rear.

basic budget system that gets the job done for around $1k.
really not that much of an audio connosieur to be able to apreiciate a great system anyhow.

Running 0/1ga is serious overkill for a 240 with a stock alternator... 4ga wire will handle the 85 or 90 amps the alternator gives with some headroom, as well as being half the weight and a third the size of 0/1ga, and being much easier to crimp.

I ran 4ga from the alt to the starter (fused @ 80a), then to a power distribution block on the firewall above the passenger's feet (behind the glove box) - this feeds my ECU harness and fuse box which is in the pass air bag location under the dash. Then the same 4ga back to the battery in the trunk, which is fused at 100a within a couple inches from the battery, and another 4ga lead is fused at 60a to the amp.

Note that when you upgrade the positive wire, always upgrade the grounds too - I use 4ga from the intake mani to a nut welded to the frame in the engine bay, and 4ga from the battery terminal to a bolt welded to the frame in the trunk. Keep your grounds as short as possible (18" max)!

the12volt.com

Yes yes ... yes! the12volt is a great resource for people just starting out. Once you're "in the know" and really want to know how much you don't know, head over to DIYMobileAudio.com (or DIYMA) and check out the forums there. Some great engineering minds post regularly.

If you really want to learn about car audio though, check out SocalSQ (http://www.diymobileaudio.com/forum/members/socalsq.html)'s posts for IASCA events in your area - talk to people that compete, and you'll learn much faster :)
