ok so i have an arc pan and an oil cooler and last season i could run a whole track day and never see the oil get above 150 F. the sensor is reading from the pan and i'm starting to think maybe its not an effective place to take a reading. i also run a thermostatic bypass to the oil cooler and i'm pretty sure on some of those track days the bypass has oppened (i can't see inside obviously but the cooler gets rather warm) and the bypass isn't supposed to open untill 180F. the bypass i have is a 90/10 split so when it's closed it will still flow 10% of the oil to the cooler. so there is also the possibility that the hot cooler is from that.

i was thinking of maybe running the sensor to one of the hoses going to the filter relocation? oh i should also add my car takes about 5 quarts and last year i was running a 5w/50 synthetic on an s14 sr. i'll be running 5w/40 this year.

edit: i should also add then when i was seeing oil at 150F i would see water spike to as high as 210F so i know the motor is running hard and hot.

2nd edit: i also checked the sensors and gauges and they are working perfect.

i would say get one of those oil sandwich plates. Hook up oil temp and oil pressaure.

i guess what i'm also asking is are the readings i'm getting from the pan accurate?

they might be close, but not as accurate as a sandwich plate would be. The oil is mixing with cooled oil in the oil pan which gives it a cooler reading. it might be 10 or so degrees off.

The sensor in the pan setup is nowhere near accurate. I originally set mine in the Greddy pan and the oil was abnormally cool - sometimes it read '0' lol. Shifted it into my oil filter relo block and now getting 5 - 10 degrees hotter than water temp - which sounds about right.

I read somewhere where some sensors only work properly if they are in the flow of the oil - so this may expain in some part the cooler than expected temps.

so then are you taking a reading before the cooler or after?

and does anyone know the inner diameter of -8 lines?

Temps are taken from the pre cooler side of my Greddy oil filter relocation block.
