View Full Version : Let's talk model cars (1:32 and larger, please)...

I mentioned this in the RTT thread, then I decided that it might be worthy of a thread of its own.
We're a forum of automotive enthusiasts, many of us on many different levels. Some of us have some die cast automobiles in our stables, so how about we show them off?
It could be ones you bought assembled, scrounged on ebay, bird-dogged in old flea markets/thrift stores (we know the thrill of the hunt is fun), Wal Mart, Toys-R-Us, Crafts Stores (yes, if you have a Michael's locally, check them out!) or whatever mom and pops hobby store you may have around.
Yes, they do make diecast motorcycles, and I am pretty sure I will be grabbing some of those as well coming soon, if you already have them, post them.
If you assembled it, and have details of the assembly, then show that off too. Let's see what you got!

... for the record, if this thread goes over well in Premieville, I may be swayed to copy it out into Gen. Pop. in Off-Topic once we have some contributions.
My only request, really, is that we keep these on a 1:32 and larger scale.

My first contribution, from the RTT2 thread:

The lady got me a couple of model cars for Valentine's, and I decided that I would set about the task of putting one of them together this morning at work...

Enter, Mercedes Benz CLK-GTR:
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/8977/gtr1pf0.jpeg

Step one, open the box and realize just how few pieces the kit consists of:
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/7256/gtr2sq1.jpeg

Step two, hang doors, snap in windshield and roof scoop, exterior almost done:
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/6144/gtr3ze5.jpeg

Next, install front grille and head/city lights:
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/7933/gtr4fg2.jpeg

Place steering wheel into dash, then dash into interior, then interior onto frame:
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/8570/gtr5ry1.jpeg

Body onto frame, twist 3 screws:
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/866/gtr6uz6.jpeg

Choose silver wheels to mount instead of gold because the gold looked silly on the silver car (I MIGHT use them for the Chrysler ME 4-12 she got me though, it's black)
Finito:
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/848/gtr9fo7.jpeg

http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/2/gtr7gw8.jpeg

http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/4714/gtr8vm9.jpeg

Total time - about an hour while working... I probably could have knocked it out in 15-20 minutes uninterrupted.
I like it, and she is already talking about getting me more of these.

I will be adding more of my collection when I arrive home from work.

i love that GTR, i had one that was already preassembled that i searched high and low for. ended up paying 30 bucks for it, but it was worth it. In the end, one of my stupid cousins just took it from the top of my shelf and smashed the shit out of it. now it's missing on mirror and a door.

Check out Maisto's "assembly line" (http://www.maisto.com/product_home_AL.asp) series (yes, that was a link), they have SEVERAL very nice cars and a few bikes, they're inexpensive, very well detailed and simple to assemble, the only thing you will need to do so is the included screwdriver and your hands.
I am gonna put together the Chrysler ME 4-12 this weekend, then I will strike out about my city looking to find more them while I run my errands.

1:32 is my REQUESTED minimum (lower that second number, bigger car)...
I am basically trying NOT to have the thread full of fucking matchbox cars.

I think we have a few A2 VW's in the garage, and chris has a very cool datsun race car that he should post. I would, but i'm at work.

It's cool though.

Then why bring it up?!
I'm saying 1:32 and bigger, anyone wants to post their 1:12 and they're more than welcome, but we're specifically speaking die casts.

Trust, I have a mountain of 1:64 that I have had since I was in the single digits, speaking less than 5 months from 30, but I am dedicating this one solely to the bigger ones.

because i have a few neat matchbox cars :(

I went to michaels and hobby lobby and all those other places a while back, the model car selection is MISERABLE. I guess these aren't as popular as they were a while back.

Wow. When I was little I used to collect a bunch of 1:18 scale die-cast models. I'll have to bust them out of storage and take pictures of them.

It all started with Hot Wheels, then die-cast, and 1:24 models, then R/C Cars, and now real cars. haha.

I need to get my box out of the garage. Never unpacked them after moving. My favorite from the lot is a 73 Vega, because I owned a 73 Vega so my friends got it for me for christmas. I also have a Shelby Cobra and Corvette Stingray that I am very fond of.

Coincidence, I happened to have photographed the black ones first for this thread, I have more in other colors that I was going to pull out to photograph, not to mention that I was GOING to go hunting for more this weekend, but I am giving that money to Barry's family instead.
I DID, however, reach up into the top of the closet and pulled down the Mach 5 and Shooting Star:

I did not even read the posts about size, I just wanted to post my stuff up.
So I wont post anymore Hotwheels, if I can't help it.
And especially when I noticed Phlip posted the silver CLK GTR.

Anyway cool thread, I remember the thread that you posted too Bryan, but that was vague, cause it could be anything.
This thread is more specific.

I was up this morning and bored, so I went ahead and assembled the Chrysler ME Four Twelve. Took about no time flat, as there were no extraneous parts (lights, grilles, etc...) that had to be put into the body, just snap some pieces in place, 2 screws and finito.
Start to finish:

Unopened box:
http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/515/dsc00526yh4.jpg

Open everything, assess the task and read the instructions before opening anything:
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/4240/dsc00553vy8.jpg

Hang interior door panels on doors, slide dash on under windshield, and place seats/cover on interior:
http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/8429/dsc00554db2.jpg

Decision time, chrome or brushed?:
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/2135/dsc00555at2.jpg

In the face of my brown-people sensibilities, I selected brushed, unlike with the CLK-GTR, they go on BEFORE the body:
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/3482/dsc00556ci5.jpg

Sit body down on frame and twist 2 screws, car is assembled:
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/558/dsc00557rv4.jpg

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/8952/dsc00558df4.jpg

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/5571/dsc00559ey1.jpg

All opened up:
http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/3290/dsc00560il7.jpg

Get back in the damned box, you!!!:
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/4311/dsc00561ks8.jpg

Total assembly time, less than 20 minutes.
It took all I have to not take it back apart and paint the interior black instead of that cream that it came in, but I will leave it "stock" as it came, as should be done with models of this nature.
... I think I need another.

I know the steering wheel is upside down in the picture, I fixed that after taking that picture.

I think the cream interior looked kinda cool.
For example on the new GTR's my favorite interior color is the black carpet and dash with the white leather seats.
The same interior on the BMW 7 series is super clean.
Car looks cool minus the alteza led tail lights.

I don't know why small shit is a big deal, but I don't buy my shit online, and it's not easy to find some of the smaller cars that I have.
The one I really want cast 170.00 but I can't justify spending that much money on a fake car.
Especially when I need parts for my car.

And now the title of this thread has been changed, so this is why there are small cars early on in the thread.

So here are my models, are 1/24 scale plastic kits. My pride and joy Porsche GT1 is not in the picture because my mom destroyed it one time when she thought my room needed cleaning. Also neither is my Bismarck model, but thats not a car.
The Die-Cast is a Mclaren MP4-17D, 1/18 scale, the one Kimi Raikkonen almost won the title with in 2003. The small ones are a Ferrari 156 Sharknose and the Spirit of St Louis.

I'll have to post back when I have them unpacked. I started collecting 1:18 scale cars back in college (few expenses + paid in cash + great toy store nearby = too much stuff). I don't buy too many nowadays, mainly because I have other priorities for my money, but I have well over a hundred of them. Biggest pain in the ass is storing them. They take up a lot of closet space.

Most of my collection is Maisto, then Bburago, then Road Legends. There are a few other manufacturers sprinkled in, but generally I have not been impressed with the quality of the "off-brands". Two of my favorites are AutoArt cars, one of Ivan Stewart's Toyota Trophy Truck and the other is a C5-R in the original yellow/white/black livery from when Corvette re-entered he Le Mans series.

I've always liked the "Assembly Line" series, and would buy them, except for the fact that every time that I've seen them for sale, they invariably cost more than the pre-assembled models do. And me being a cheap-skate, can't justify paying more for a product where they took their own labor out of it.

Phlip
03-04-2009, 06:05 AM
Funny you mention that, Nick...
As I look through my collection, I am liking Maisto the best, with bBurago being a close second, and it has been quite the opposite in my neck of the woods, in that the Assembly Line usually cost a few bucks less...
I have also found that Amazon.com and 3000toys.com has a LOT of things I like, and I have a list that I will be filling from with 1:18 and 1:24 cars and 1:12 motorcycles in the coming weeks...
Wait til you guys see my next couple of acquisitions, though.

I'll have to check out amazon again. I haven't looked there in years, they never had much of a selection back in the day. One of the cool ones I have I did get from amazon, though, a Smart car I bought back in 1999 or 2000, clearance on amazon. It came with two sets of body panels that you could swap out, making it either yellow/black or red/black.

Another good site to get models from, and where I got my AutoArt C5-R, is exoticar.com. They always have a huge selection.

Do eeeeeeet!!!
I swear, this was jumped back into existence when I got the Mach 5 at Toys R Us in the Speed Racer movie blitz. I noticed that NO ONE had the 1:18 Shooting Star, so I jumped on Amazon and saw it, but I was BROKE!!! I half-joked in a blog that I wanted someone to buy it for me. A couple weeks later, I met my (now) girlfriend, who apparently went back through my blogs to seek clues for Christmas gifts.
12/25, bam I got a shooting star.
A couple weeks after that, we went into Michael's, and saw the Maisto Assembly line ones, I expressed interest in several of them, and she happened to pick the 2 I was most interested in from that particular one (the Mercedes and the Chrysler)... She handed them to me when I picked her up on Valentine's day.
I was fully bitten by the bug then, I spend my weekends looking through thrift stores, arts/crafts, I have been to ALL FOUR Michaels stores in my area, I swing by the section in Wal Mart and Target when time allows, and now I have had my coat pulled to the store called Tuesday Morning, which we have 3 of here... I am going to one tomorrow to get my next acquisition, which I will photograph and post tomorrow evening.

This is fucking fun.

I was expecting another assembly post lol.

It's not exciting if it comes all pretty in the box.

It is exciting that it's a rad car - I don't see myself paying crazy $$$ for one unless I had a real one in the garage and wanted everyone that comes by my desk at work to ask about it, etc.

It's a model larger than 1:32 scale, so yes it does.
My best friend actually has that same kit, got it home back over his birthday last year and spent the whole day locked in his den putting it together.

That looks killer! I <3 c5 and c6 R's - they made a few white ones available to the public in memory of some super successful GM driver for some totally reasonable price (I remember it being less than $500k) - imagine showing up to a track day in that. :ddog:

Photobucket was still being retarded, wouldn't let me upload them directly to a folder, found out I had to upload them to my main photobucket directory, then move them to the appropriate folder.

Anyways, here's the pics that I happened to have on my computer. I started to photograph them for Insurance purposes if something ever happens.

This is maybe about 1/4 of my collection, all 1:18 scale.

Mr. Brindley, if not for being 350 miles from me, we would likely be good friends... I also see that you know (or knew, since Kay Bee is now dead) where to find the good deals, since they had like a PERPETUAL sale on Models.
You're making me go out after a couple of cars I have seen the last few weeks, after I get rear tires on the coupe.
I love your collection, I am getting that top-off 65 GTO and the woody from a booth at the flea market that was closed Sunday, when the state of NC starts sending me my money, I will get after it a bit more fiercely.

axiomatik
04-10-2009, 06:54 PM
Indeed, Kay-Bee took more of my money than I'd like to admit. I could usually get them for ~$13 on sale, occasionally ~$10-11, I probably bought 60 or 70 cars there. Almost all of those race cars came from another place called Toy Co. that was in Arizona Mills mall, they were a little pricier, but they had all kinds of cool models that you'd never find at Kay-Bee. Target usually has 4 or 5 in stock, sometimes at pretty good prices. I got that Hot Wheels G-Machines Chevelle and another G-machines (forget which) on clearance there for under $10 each.

Now that I am not being assraped by the State Dept. of Revenue, I will be able to afford to shop in Hungates and Hobby Lobby for some of the rarer and race cars, this week will be the first, and payroll tells me that they need to manually issue me a check, which will surely go toward tires and model cars, lol.

Okay, so this morning, I made a decently hearty breakfast, which -- as I customarily do -- carried to work with me to eat at my desk...
I had some shit to do when I got in, so I was not able to eat it until damn near 9:30.
Old annoying-ass is off today, so to make sure the department was not short anyone on lunch, I took mine early and I was FAR from hungry...
"Fuck, I got a couple dollars and have an extra check coming this week, I will hit the spots and see what I can find with this hour of my life."
Yes, I said that out loud, but I was in the car by myself, so no one heard me.
I went by Tuesday Morning, Michaels and Target before heading back to the building...
While in Tuesday Morning, I saw another of those 1955 SLR Mille Miglias, but left it there, instead getting...

1990 BMW 850i:
http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/8434/850i.jpg
Yes, I know that it may not fit the designs of what some might think of as a "OMG, BUY THAT ONE!!!" model, but the fact remains that I wanted one when I was a young teenager in the 90's, and the nightmare that they are to maintain is the only thing between adult me and actually LOOKING for one. I own one pain-in-the-ass car already, luckily inexpensive to maintain.

Michaels disappointed me today, I didn't get anything there, but Target was right across the parking lot, where I would acquire...

2009 Nissan GTR:
http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/6559/gtr.jpg
... now, I was a LITTLE bit worried about it being from the "Dub City" line, seeing as how much I detest Dub magazine. I swear, I have friends who drive shit like what appears in that magazine and it almost makes me ashamed of my brown skin, lol.
One could imagine how close I came to suicide when I went to Miami on my way to my cruise a while back. Luckily, we're cruising from Canaveral this year.
Anyway, before shitting on the idea of getting it, I had to inspect it and make sure that it had been equipped with wheels/adornments resembling those I saw on the one at the auto show back in February, and the fact that you see the picture above on the front seat of the car shows that it passed the test.

Katie and I will strike out on one of our "adventures" this weekend and I am hoping to be able to cop a few more.

Funny story:
Earlier this evening, I was looking in my closet for something a member had asked someone for in the marketplace earlier today... I had gotten it expecting to need it, then changed my mind, so it was among the items chillin in my closet with the shoes and VHS porn and shit...
Anyway, I had to move a box that I knew contained model cars and such. I opened it, and of course had to ask myself "what in the hell?" then thought back to why I would have the item.
I remembered 2 Christmases ago, my pops was shopping for my niece and nephews for gifts and I (or my sister, I forget which) drove to Wal Mart. I saw a car and it was pretty inexpensive, I had a couple dollars in my pocket and was poised to buy it, I put it in the cart, then bumped into this girl I was trying to put the moves on, so I Regina and pops leave with the cart... At the end of the night, apparently pops had paid for the car and I forgot about it.
... until tonight that is...

http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/3138/dsc00702c.jpg
Front brakes/wheels on, no choices on this one like we'd find on the Assembly Line in years to come...

Okay, still looking for something in the bottom of that closet, I found another car that needed assembly...

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/4944/shootingstar.jpg

I know what you're saying "Phlip, you already HAVE a 1:18 shooting star, don't you?"
Yes, I do.
Fact remains, I actually forgot I'd gotten this one though. See, when I got it, I thought assembly would be a BREEZE and I had disposable enough income to spend $25.97 (according to the Wal Mart tag still on it) on bullshit at the time, I am pretty sure this went down in 2004-2005, early 06 at the latest. I'd gotten a little bit in on it, then abandoned it. It was too difficult and I had other shit in my life...
Well, I am a lot better at these things now, so I sat and started in on it tonight, and it is a lot easier than I recall it being, but is definitely not a 1-sitting assembly as you've seen previously.
Also, the packaging for this one does not allow for it to be securely placed back in, so I will have to spring for a display case for this one.

Okay, exercising the coupon I scored on the internets, I went to the Hobby Lobby and exchanged 10.80 moneys for a 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS396 coupe.
I would ban any of your mothers from the planet for a wagon, but meh...
Very straightforward on the assembly, no surprises or anything of that nature.

Before cracking open the packaging:
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/8016/dsc00726t.jpg

Interior panels, front/rear glass, rear view mirror and bumpers installed:
http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/3055/dsc00727nqg.jpg

Interior consists of putting seat backs on, nothing more:
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/5863/dsc00728k.jpg

Decision time, brushed or chrome?:
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/2388/dsc00729f.jpg

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/3425/dsc00730v.jpg
That's right, I defied the brown-people urge to put chrome on it... I mean, if I could have ruined the car by lifting it and putting 30" wheels on it, then I might have gone for the chrome.

Yes, just that simple, I am done with this one now:
http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/443/dsc00731b.jpg

http://img379.imageshack.us/img379/8320/dsc00732.jpg

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/8464/dsc00733e.jpg

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/9330/dsc00734i.jpg
And now I can wipe my fingerprints off of it...

... now GET BACK IN THAT BOX:
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/2967/dsc00735p.jpg

When the state of NC finds it on their hearts to give me the fucking money they have been extorting me as a means to get a no-interest loan paid back as the fuck they feel like it, I will begin putting these in display cases. All to be featured on shelving whenever I can get my credit back together and I can buy a house instead of paying rent.

Story time with uncle Phlip... Gather round, kiddies.

One Sunday last May, I went to Toys R Us after church and paid $24.97 plus sales tax for this:

http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/7676/dsc00550cf8.jpg

Disappointment ensued, as they did not have the Shooting Star to match it at the time of purchase. I would come home and the ONLY place that had it for purchase at the time was Amazon, but this was right at the time I went into my situation with the dept of revenue, along with the brakes on my car shitting the bed and a couple other things, all at once, so I forgot about the mission.
Some of you may actually read my MySpace blogs, but I half-jokingly expressed interest in the Ertl shooting star on Amazon in one of my random thoughts blogs back in October, a couple weeks after meeting my now-girlfriend that I wanted it.
Christmas comes and she'd bought it for me, see it here:

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/5619/dsc00549tc7.jpg

Fast forward to a point I made last week, where when I was looking for something in my closet, I found...

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/4944/shootingstar.jpg
... of the Ertl "American Muscle Body Shop" series (from 2003 I would later find trying to investigate how fucking long I'd HAD the damn thing). Apparently I had bought it in 2004, found it to be more than I was willing to involve myself in at the time and put away. Then we moved at the end of 06, so it was packed away and I fucking forgot about it.

Now, as I am better with these things than I was when I initially bought it, I decided that I would go right ahead with the assembly of it this time around...
After a couple of pieces were placed together, I realized that it is the EXACT FUCKING SAME as the other one. Literally identical, same markings, features and points of articulation. Hell, even the fact that the paint is a little lighter in color than the seats that it is supposed to match is identical...

Yes, ladies and gentlefolk, I am a dipshit sometimes...

Anyway, I completed the assembly of it, so let us discuss that, no?

The instructions start with the assembly of the engine, and all its accessories installed:
http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/7384/dsc00739.jpg

Interior consisted of not much more than assembling seats, cementing the pedals and shifter where they belong:
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/5186/dsc00740b.jpg

Holy shit! This thing even has the "grabber" extension:
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/6710/dsc00741zwa.jpg

Rear subframe was simple as snapping the wheels/tires onto the brake asembly and sliding those into the axle:
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/1035/dsc00742e.jpg

Front suspension/brakes/wheel assemblies on...:
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/8508/dsc00743e.jpg

... and we have a rolling chassis now:
http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/1851/dsc00744j.jpg

Now let's put that engine in it:
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/1742/dsc00745i.jpg

Now the interior goes into the frame, as does that periscope just next to the driver's seat and the steering shit:
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/7061/dsc00746j.jpg

Now alls there is to do is to flip it over, stick in 7 screws and we're finito:
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/7182/dsc00747u.jpg

On the whole, the assembly of this one was the largest pain in my ass of all of the ones I have assembled to date. I don't know who or how they're assembled in the factories, but I have a real respect for the people who do if it is by human hands...

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/674/dsc00752o.jpg

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/7049/dsc00749p.jpg

Similarities?:
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/8936/dsc00750l.jpg

http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/2390/dsc00751.jpg

And then the twins together to show what a fucking idiot I am:
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/2268/dsc00748n.jpg

I am done beating myself up over having allowed myself the forum to build a model car I already owned, or to have someone purchase one for me that I already had but simply needed assembly. I just thought it was kinda funny, I guess.

1958 Chevy Impala:

And now, I will work with my hands...

1969 Dodge Charger R/T
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/7936/dsc00831y.jpg

Let us see what we're up against:
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/9219/dsc00832udc.jpg

Engine and interior installed:
http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/5889/dsc00833m.jpg
Fun fact about that engine, it is not any carbureted V-8 that SHOULD appear in a car like this, rather a Fuel-Injected V-10, like in a VIper. Interesting.

http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/2276/dsc00834guz.jpg

Cockpit installed:
http://img353.imageshack.us/img353/667/dsc00836.jpg

Sit the frame down on it and twist a couple screws:
http://img152.imageshack.us/img152/6598/dsc00837y.jpg

Chose the brushed wheels instead of the chrome, and we were all done:

http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/7798/dsc00841z.jpg

Lamborghini Murcielago:

What are we up against, here:
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/8994/dsc00845a.jpg

Doors and dash on:
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/5204/dsc00846dyr.jpg

... and installed:
http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/3622/dsc00848o.jpg

Decision time:
http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/421/dsc00849d.jpg
... I'm gonna go with the chrome.

And like that, we're all done:
http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/6898/dsc00852v.jpg

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/3019/dsc00853e.jpg

So, am I a bad person for throwing out the boxes?

At the risk of damaging your investments by not having them in display cases, yes...

Back to the task at hand, 1987 Chevy Caprice:

One-piece front seat, nothing more:

Black or chrome, black or chrome?:
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/930/dsc00859vfl.jpg

Let's go with black, mount some tires on them and load them up with brakes:
http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/9373/dsc00860c.jpg

Put the exhaust on:
http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/1241/dsc00861z.jpg

i just picked up one of those kouki 180 models... they are pretty difficult to get ahold of it seems..

so i now have a nice lil stack..... Chuki 180, Kouki 180, Silvia 2000cc, S15 Spec-R aero

maybe one day i'll start on them.... thinking of swapping all the cool parts to the kouki kit.... since the rest are pretty easy to find

funny how all the jada toys cars are based off someones real car, usually a socal car.. like the 180sx has 240z fender flares, nismo sideskirts and rear valances and a kouki bumper, that could only be one car, JDM Rice's car back in the day lol
and their 240z model is a copy of SR240z

not all the time true. the way i look at it is the "model" cars are for accuracy, and the diecast are just for a cheap presentation.

Went to costco last night. They had some 1:18 models now. However, they used to carry Maisto, now they have MotorMax. Some of them looked pretty cheap. OG Mini looked good. Also had VW W12 Nardo concept, never seen a model of that before.

oh man, this thread just reminded me about all the diecast cars and models i have unfinished or sitting in their boxes. i'll post up some pics asap, i have a HUGE collection of Top Fuel Funny Cars and Dragsters from the early to mid 2000's. back when i was heavily in to NHRA.

I really need to get a couple of those huge glass display cases that you see at those hobby shops. that way i can show off my collection more.

Yeah... you twisted my arm with this post, and I scouted my local Costco for that display. At 12.99 each, they weren't bad for nearly ANY 1/18 scale car, so I got that VW you mentioned.

I just realized I've never posted any pics of my nicer models. I've got a few AutoArt models that are very nice. Ivan Stewarts Baja 1000 trophy truck, C5-R (yellow/black), Porsche 917 long-tail, Corvette SS concept. I'll try snagging pictures off the autoart site.

How about a model car that costs 12 times as much as the real car it's based on:

Lamborghini Aventador 1:8 scale model costs 12 times the real thing [w/exclusive photos] (http://www.autoblog.com/2011/09/17/lamborghini-aventador-1-8-scale-model-costs-12-times-the-real-th/)

almost $5 million for the model...

I am basically trying NOT to have the thread full of fucking matchbox cars.

Funny you say that as I have a matchbox car that is said to be worth about $1000. Toys are just that, toys. I play with 1:1 scale.

That said: I do have somewhere a CLKGTR, 55 Gullwing, 55 roadster, 55 slr, and 55 sterling moss (not the 722) somewhere in the house.
