okay here is my problem and hopefully it helps others out as much at it will help me.....

there is a L shaped piece of metal that bolts on to cover the chains in between the 2 cam shafts. (to prevents them from i dont know what )thats what im trying to figure out well the thing is that it was just bouncing around making a real loud clicking noise. okay so i removed my engine cover and removed that piece walla... i thought i had solved the problem turns out that when i bolted it back up now the chains where hitting the top of the engine cover.....

so what i want to figure out is what is that L shaped piece of metal for and why are my chains hitting and causing it to snap and now they are hitting the top of my engine cover....

please help me

this is what it should look like

Nissan recommended taking that out, so go ahead and just remove it. There is also another one to take out but it is more of a pain to get to.

are you saying it's still hitting the inside of the valve cover tho?

in this case you will need to add tension to the chain or replace the chain if it has too much slack

Yeah man it's just a chain guide. Both my 240's broke off. According to Nissan it is a non replaceable part, (throw away). If the chain has too much slack in it, it might be time for a new timing chain tensioner and chain too.

buy a new tensioner, if the doesn't work you have to buy a new chain

DO not "recalibrate" anything, do it right and get a new tensioner and fresh chain. they tend to expand over time.

If you can get a FSM the chain isnt that bad. Took me a weekend of dabbing at it for a few hours here and there. But try re-setting your timing if the chain isnt hitting/rubbing 1st. better than ruining your poor KA. $500 is very high since any low milage KA i've seen for sale is no more than $500, I paid $600 for a DOHC KA and Tranny from a 97' with 70k miles.

lol the third thing i did when i first bought my car was remove that. then proceeded to throw it at my roommates younger brother. "put that shit on your slow ass honda"

FSM = Factory Service Manual. They make a Chilton's/Haynes Manual look like a retarded child cast away when born at the factory. Helps you know what you are doing when repairing just about anything on your car. They are vehicle specific.

any body have an estimate on how much a timing service will run me parts+labor
someone that has had this done on their KAde
thanks
i have been driving my car but i drive really slow i hate it my check oil light turns on and off
and my check engine light stays on now when i drive before it would just turn on when i put the key in. i know i am heading into some trouble just as long as i get it fixed before summer im cool not stressiong at all right now im used to these situations

pull the codes from your ecu, the timing chain will not cause the car to pull a code, it also wont cause a loss of oil pressure. that may be a non-related issue.

unfortunately that is possible. a quick scenario can be that the upper timing chain tensioner is so effed in an open position that the oil pressure is severely dropping to dangerously low levels.

Just a thought tho... You should take it to a mechanic for a real diagnosis of your situation.

If you are anything competent with sockets and wrenches, you can check your tensioner. Sometimes they will get stuck. There is Raines' writeup, I think he is on here... Step by Step with pictures.

There is no check oil light on a 240SX. Read the owner's manual, clown, it's a low oil pressure light. If it's coming on your oil pressure is dropping below 8psi, at anything besides idle you're shredding bearings. Quit driving it.

A chain job is quoted at 6hours labor from most places, so add that up.

Pull off the upper timing chain cover (KA? I need to L2read) and get at the tensioner.

If it springs back still just clean it up w/ carb cleaner and wd-40 to make sure it more easily squishes and rebounds. worked for me when I had my ka.
