Alright look, I took my 89 s13 to a smogger the other day and he failed me because the CEL(Check engine light) is lit up while the car is on. It passed emissions with flying colors, but the damn CEL light is cockblocking.... I took a peek under the hook for stray wires and found 1. It was the O2 Sensor. I fixxed that wire and its definitly not the problem. I'd rather check the common problems first before I pay 90 bucks for a flow chart...:duh:
Any kind of help would be appreciated. I just wanna know the most common things that would make a CEL go on and have nothing to do with emissions. The engine is a KA24e by the way, so I made sure the wiring was all done from when it was swapped. ALSO! the speedo doesn't work, will that have anything to do with my problem??

Thnx guys.

if it pass emissions, just rewire to CEL parallel to the oil light.

That sounds hard to do -.-
It makes sense though, kinda like cheating, huh?
That is illegal, right?

Why not just check what codes your getting and then clear the ECU?

Speedometer not working wouldn't trigger a code.

I don't have a scanner, and I wouldn't know where to start without one. So, this morning, I'm going to head up to the 76 gas station and they'll scan me along with the purchase of motor oil. :D

you don't need a scanner. you check obd0 and obd1 codes by the screw and led on the ecu.

Try reconnecting the battery (reseting everything)

A lot of the time that works. At least temporarily so you can do that, go real quick and get the smog then the light maybe turn on like a couple days later haha.

Or you can take the bulb out of the gauge cluster. I think you can do that with just going underneath the dash and up.

but if you take the bulb out, it won't be lit when the key is on accessory, and i think that will fail the car too.

Just check the codes, its super easy, take the ECU out of the kick panel, flip it over, turn the screw back and forth, get the codes and do work!

Alright alright, taking the bulb out and fooling with the dash lights and all, that could get me a ticket... So, about the ECU, how's it read? I blinks a little light, correct? Mode 3 is diagnostics, first flashes 10s last flashes 1s, right? I'm vaguely remembering this. I haven't seen my ECU since i got the car.

fsm has all the info on pulling codes. no need to take the bulb out

Alright, I got my codes ready to compare. I removed the panel revealing the ECU, but, i don't see the red and green lamps. Am I right to assume those lights are on the OTHER side of the ECU? Like, when you remove the kick panel, you only see the back end of the ECU, correct?? If so, this means I have to dismount it. I see two screws, one above and one below the ECU. Are these the only screws?

yes, you have to take it out and turn it around. you will see a screw and the leds

dude just check the FSM, download it and it'll walk you through the process step by step. its a lot easier.

sometimes the LED is worn out, so just watch the CEL and it'll blink. If the LED is still good then cool

Wanna help diagnose mine? =]

90 SOHC

I got ECU Code 43, TPS sensor.

I've adjusted it already, swapped in a BRAND new one, and adjusted it. It still comes on.

Auto to Manual conversion was done on it previously. IIRC, ECU #14 is Auto, but correct me if I am wrong.

Can a manual TPS work with an auto ECU, and vice versa? Or will it absolutely NEED to be manual TPS to a manual ECU?

I don't have a voltage meter, so i can't properly measure the output at this time.

Thanks for taking a gander! :wiggle:
