View Full Version : Fear of heights

I remember I used to love roller coasters, skyscrapers, shit I wanted to be a pilot when I was a kid. But I've seen my fear of heights increase through the years. I can't stand at the window of the 20th floor without my legs shaking! It helps if I don't look down, but my subconscious tells me "down is still there, down is not going anywhere, the only direction from up is DOWN!"

it's gotten so bad, I was watching a movie of a guy standing at a ledge of the rooftop and it gave ME shivers! but I can watch skydiving/base jumping all day. which brings me to my point: I've always wanted to try skydiving. But I'm afraid when the moment comes I'm going to chicken out and bail. How can I overcome this? Hypnotism? Therapy?

Sometimes the only way to get over a fear is to tackle it head on.

I used to hate needles, getting shots, drawing blood, etc, so I started shooting heroin (lol jk). Seriously, I started donating blood to Red Cross every year when they came around. I got a sticker, free lemonade, a cookie, and was donating blood to a good cause and I got over my fear of needles.

But keep in mind, if you go up on the plane and chicken out, you are still paying for the jump regardless. But since it's your first time, you will be jumping with an instructor anyway, so you won't be alone.

Don't waste your money on therapy. A fear of heights isn't worth the money unless you work somewhere that involves being at heights outside. You can always warm up to skydiving with bungee jumping or something too.

just as neverrain said, tackle it head on. Since you can watch skydiving vids all day with no problem you shouldn't chicken out. It seems like your fear is mainly when you're closer to the ground, not from 5000 feet. Give it a shot, trust me, you'll have a blast

Don't be such a pussy. Are you gonna let a little fear stop you from jumping out of a plane at 13,000+ feet? NO, be a man and handle that shit.

I love heights...

For real... I grew up for a portion of my childhood at an airport pretty much.

My only fear... Spiders. I hate those fuckers. :rl:

don't get me started on spiders! I used to collect them (live) as a kid and now find them disgusting and freaks of nature, they're demons incarnate!

i was so ready to dive about 2 years ago when my gf at the time planned it. we broke up a couple months before the jump, i had thought about going alone but that would've just made it worse. i think it's that situation that's blocking my courage. i think i'm masking my fear with an emotional event...

check between your legs for 2 football shaped objects, if they are there, you should be fine.

Skydiving is awesome. You really should try it. You'll be strapped to a professional during your first couple jumps anyways.
Funny thing is that I would never bungee jump, I just don't trust the rope, yet I trust the 'chute to open up...

i jump from planes at least once a month. when the time comes to jump and you are looking at the ground from the plane door and the wind is blowing in your face, like nike says: "just do it."

Its all about hiding your fear when a moment arises :trogdor:

Your first time skydiving will be a "tandem" jump, meaning you're strapped into someone who knows what they're doing.

Just tell them the truth - you really wanna try it, but you're scared. They'll laugh, and when the time comes, carry your cryin' ass through that door and you'll all have a LOL about it later.

That could be the best $200 you ever spend - feeling like you conquered a fear is one of life's natural highs.

Drifting helped me with my fear of roller coasters.

No BS.

I was gonna say just have someone push you off if you bitch out. But yeah forgot about that tandem shit for your first couple of jumps. Just do it. I'm going to sooner or later, soon as I can drag someone along with so I'm not the only one crying like a bitch lol.

Since you're in LV, try the indoor skydiving. I have tried both indoor and outdoor, the indoor one is fun as hell, but of course
it cannot compete with an outdoor experience.

Funny... I had a dream about heights last night, but yeah I hear you on that. Im not afraid of hieghts, but when im some where high i do get the shiver too. And my knees feel real weak. Sometimes its to a point where I get really scared and dont' want to move. Like getting to the top of GMR, I always want to stand near the edge just to look down, but im afraid I might tumble down the mountain hahaha.

My fear of heights only really apply to like, standing somewhere where I can look down and see how high I am.

I have no problem with being on an airplane and looking down or stuff like that, so I doubt skydiving will scare me, but the whole standing on a ledge or balcony and looking down and seeing the parking lot or beach below me or something, I can't stand that.

Shit I know just how you feel, I've been afraid of heights all my life but the strange thing is I can get on a roller coaster and be fine but that 'feeling' is still there. you just gotta say eff it and do it. Mind over matter

I want to try skydiving, I'm not scared of planes and I only shy away from the edge of buildings, cliffs don't scare me as much... when I was little I couldn't even do the balcony at a Bruins game and I still can't walk up stairs if I can see through them and they're more than a story high

Yeah but the real thing is so much better from what I'm told. I'll get around to it sooner or later, indoor one I'd only do drunk. Flipping around and shit lol.
