Lately I have been looking at netbooks. Mainly the MSI Wind/Averatec Buddy,, Dell Mini 9, Lenovo S10, Samsung NC10 and the HP Mini 1000. Everyone is likes the Eee's but I didn't like the Eee 1000H.

Anyone have a netbook? Used any of them? Thoughts?

eee 1000h is my desire. if the dell was a 10" scren it'd be cooler though. also the lenovo is very nice, a buddy of mine has one.

9~10" was what I was looking at. Doesn't seem to be to much of a difference. Some of those 8" are crazy small.

I don't get peoples obsession with these. A few people I work with bought some and installed OSX on them.

Although I guess there is more appeal if you live in a city where you can always get internet.

yup. and with the eee's, the 9" screen comes with the more cramped keyboard. the 10" is perfect.

i'd be all about the s10 if they'd give it a bigger battery, though. very nice looking machine.

notebooks are heavy and cumbersome. they suck down batteries like crazy.
if you own a desktop, you'll never really use your notebook to its fullest extent because you can just get shit done on the desktop, which is more powerful anyway. at least, this is the case for me.
netbooks are portable, light, and do everything you really need on the go. great for sitting on the couch watching tv. won't burn your leg as bad.

Yeah I'd go with the EEE 1000H, HA, or HE. You'll want the 6cell battery too. Dell's also coming out with the mini 10 as a competitor to the EEE 1000, so that should be good too. Doesn't the MSI wind only have one mouse button? I wouldn't be able to stand not having a right-click on XP.

I'm on my acer aspire 1. Girlfriend has whatever the HP mini with the normal harddrive.

I got a netbook because I use a laptop for internet, and homework. My Toshiba I always left at home because it was big and heavy for a backpack. I leave the netbook at home because I don't need a computer at school yet this semester... oh well.

So I decided to add a baby to my current portable pc stable.

Recently I've been eyeing netbooks. Acer One, Asus 1000HA, Hp 2133/2140 or 1010nr, Dell mini 9 and what not.

Right now I'm leaning towards the HP 2133 just because it isn't as expensive as the 2140 yet still performs pretty well.

Experiences and suggestions on any of the ones I've listed or forgotten?
I noobed it up elsewhere so I figured I'd just quote myself in here.

Some of the stuff has already been talked about. But I'm really interested in the HP 2133 or the 2140. I keep seeing these 1010nr's all over the place but haven't looked around at them.

I have eee pc 1000H, the longest battery time i had was close to 5 hours and shortest was 3.5 hours (my wifi is always on) . I upgraded the memory to 2GB for only $20 while it was on sale, it only took me 5 minutes to install it because it has a latch allow you to have easy access without avoiding the warranty. The hard drive can be upgrade too because it just a regular 2.5" SATA and it came with the oem window image disk. the boot up time is awsome, it only takes about 30-50 second. the camera sucks but i don't use it anyway. there is also a big internet community out there.

I bought an EEE 1000HA today for $300 even on craigslist. Brand new and sealed.

It's charging right now, I've yet to fire it up for the first time. I work and go to school in downtown DC, so there's always wifi somewhere. Also, I can use it to watch Top Gear on during my long subway commute, which is win.

So far, so good with the Samsung NC10.

I decided to go with it due to it being most like a traditional laptop without feeling cheep like an eeepc.

It was either the Samsung NC10 or the HP 2140. But after checking out the specs they both are pretty much the same. Except the samsung comes with a better battery as well as better webcam.

So price for price the samsung is a huge bang for the buck.

The six cell lipo battery comes standard while the other laptops require you to buy it as an option.

The keyboard has a good feel to it since it doesn't have the multi language keys. So everything looks and feels "normal" so I don't find myself mistyping more often than I normally do.

My only gripe is the touchpad. Horizontally it's great. Vertically it's a little narrow. So I find myself tracking higher than the pad actually goes.

It's pretty small.

There are smaller, but they feel annoying to me when I try to type on them. But knowing me I'll pick up an 8" hp 1010nr or something just to see how I like it; they are so damn cheap it's hard to resist!

I'm going to buy a 2gig stick of ram tomorrow since I can't leave well enough alone; I don't feel a need for it but for $30 how can I complain?

how is the NC10 better than the 1000 HA / 1000 HE ?

i couldnt find anyone got the 1000HE in stock yet

!Zar!
02-24-2009, 11:21 AM
Honestly, they are pretty similar.

My problem with the prior eee pc's was that they placed the keys in stupid places.

Luckily the 1000he fixes that problem with an all new keyboard layout.

The touchpad is visibly bigger as compared to the samsung nc10.

Asus placed the seemingly netbook standard Intel atom processor in there but this time it's beefed up to 1.66mhz instead of the 1.5 that the samsung comes with.
I haven't had a change to test the new processor, but I could only imagine it's a tad bit faster if at best.

In other news, HP is releasing a higher res 2140 netbook supposedly some time around march.

Dell is releasing their mini 10 which seems promising with the integrated GPS, integrated mobile broadband, integrated TV tuner with Edge-to-edge 16:9 HD 720p 10-inch display.

This little wonder should be releasing in a couple weeks with pricing still yet to be unannounced.

They really are all mostly the same performance wise since 95% of them are based on the same intel atom/945 combo. It's just the ergonomics that are different. The build quality of the HP netbooks is better than the other brands in my experience (I've messed with the HP, Acer One, and Asus netbooks). Also look at the battery. On the older netbooks a lot of them came with a shitty 3-cell battery which didn't last long. I think most of the newer netbooks come with a 6-cell now.

Fuck buying their ram. You can max the thing out(2gb) for $20 on newegg. Their 16gb($75) HD is reasonable for OSX. I don't know enough about PCI-E SSD's to buy a bigger one elsewere.

The XP model is still $299.

Yeah, 8gb is nothing...

I was going to buy ram off of newegg, but I decided to drop by Fry's electronics and grabbed a 2gb stick for $20.

Sucks though, because I now have a 1gb stick. Feels kind of pointless to post it up for $10. So I'll just hold onto it as a nerd paperweight.

I got Project64 (N64 emulator) running on my block-stock 1000HA today.

It runs BEAUTIFULLY, even in full screen. Obviously, full screen on a 1000HA is a wacky resolution and so it compresses it some, I will thus almost always play in a big window, but it's just nice to see what looked like 60fps full screen.

Now I'm going to try to get EPSXE and my Sega Model 2 Arcade emulator to run on it.

I might take vids with my Blackberry of the machine running N64 later today. It looks pretty cool. I don't even have a joypad for it yet, I'm thinking X360 USB.

I'm typing this with a Lenovo s10. Excellent netbook, my only complaint is the quirky keyboard...the right shift button is extra small so I accidentally miss it often. The battery life is also abysmal. 2 hours if you're lucky. If you get the s10, do yourself a favor and pick up a 6 cell battery.

I already have the Samsung NC10 and wanted to try something else, so I picked up the MSI Wind on a whim. I haven't had a chance to use the Wind a lot, but after the first few minutes I noticed that the touch pad sucks horribly. Now with the NC10 I noticed that the touch pad feel wasn't right either. After spending a few minutes I was able to disable/adjust a few features and it feels just like my full size laptops in precision.
But so far there isn't anything that can be done aside from changing the touch pad. I've checked around and that seems to be the only remedy.

I'll post up more once I get the time chance to do a test between them as well as more time with them.

Not having a CD/DVD drive sometimes a pain but I have an external. I also find if overheats easily. If you want to use it for the internet ONLY it's not bad, but even then I found I had to scroll way too much and I couldn't view images properly or some web sites.

BUMP. Its been one hell of a year, and a lot of new things have changed up the Netbook market.

The new chipset N450 atom processor is wicked. Adds a lot of refinement to the current stock of netbooks.

I picked up a Gateway LT2104U.

1.66 N450
250gb SATA HD
1.3 MP webcam for cybering (why else would you want a webcam, duhhhh)
Nice 93% keyboard (Almost exactly like my A4Tech Mini Keyboard)
Multi-Gesture mouse pad (stops multitouch as soon as you start typing)
IIRC, N Speed wireless built in
1g Ram, expandable to 2g physical
Win7 starter (cant change background, boo)
6 Cell battery (8.5 hrs usage)

Only for 309 @ bestbuy. SOO awesome. The arrowkey placement is weird, takes some getting used to. Its literally, half of a key itself.

[Pg Up][UpArrw][Pgdwn]
[LftArr][DwnArr][RgtArr]

Weird, but still, admissible.

The awesome thing about Win7 is the ReadyBoost. You can use ____gb USB sticks to work as additional ram. BBuy had a 4g stick for 13, and I am using the full stick to Boost.

Literally, this laptop works faster than my aunts HP DV7, My cousins FAPbook, and other similar netbooks.

The BIGGEST draw for me to this laptop? It didn't look like it was meant for kids. Its got a refined look, sleek, and sharp, like a normal laptop, just physically smaller.
