View Full Version : Painting Rims black : HOW TO?

I just picked up a set of 91-93 Alloys

I have a black car and i want to make these wheels black..

i have about $100.00 to blow.

is there a more cost effective way than getting them professionally Power Coated?

and not as ghetto as just cheap spray paint


any help would be very appreciated thanks

oh and some pics would be great too .

painting rims is ghetto, go powdercoat so it sticks or just buy black rims. I do not know of any other way.

I wouldn't even consider doing anything but powder-coat; wait until u can afford it...

if you can, get them powdercoated. but if you just want black rims and don't wanna pay the money to get new ones (since you just got some) or spend money on powdercoating, you can just get some krylon spray paint. that's what we did on my friend's civic. you just use primer on the rims, then you use the krylon. it gives a really nice finish. but you'll have to be careful because the paint will chip sometimes. it's the most cost effective way though. we spent 10 bucks to get all 4 of his rims painted.

I spray painted my rims with just black. Really quick and ****ty job. I would recommend getting access to a sand blaster and take all the rust/old paint off (might be able to get a machine shop to do it) then primmer it with Krylon and finish with black. Does anyone know if a machine shop or what kind of specialty shop would do sand blasting?

instead of sand blasting, couldnt you just sand it? it would take a while but save $$

the only thing i dont like about painting is the high gloss.. i want a flat black w/o shine.

and powercoating is like $100.00 per rim correct?

i only spent like 70.00 on the whole set of wheels

You cant get flat black spray paint. And i have seen powder going 100-125 +

Yeah hand sanding would be a big ****ing pain! Also if these rims are currently on your car, it will out of commission for maybe three day if hand sanding compared to one day if you can find someone to blast the for you. ask the board maybe someone has one in their garage near you!

well i have a set of stock doughnuts which my car was runing on .. i just recently picked these rims up..

a drill or right angle grinder with a flap disc or agressive wire brush might knock the nasty off of them without too much hassle. I'd say the crannies that didn't get you could knock off with sandpaper, and then they would be ready for sanding. Some manufactueres for rice stuff sell special wheel paint, but I think if you prepped, primered, painted, and maybe cleared, you would have a durable finish.

get "dupli-colorhigh performance wheel coating" it is only like $3 and it works good but make sute you get the clearcoat for it ,you can get it at a autozone or somewhere,,i used it and i am happy with it

go to www.dupli-color.com the closest color they have to black is graphite,

It's flat black, and heat resistant! Perfect for wheels.

Anything above 70 a rim I would consider a ripoff. I had a site awhile back that had powdercoating prices for various parts. I'll see if I can find it.

does the graphite look dark grey or black?.. the website doesnt show any pics.

do they carry this paint at auto parts store? ie Kragen, AutoZone etc..

well i did it on a set of white rims painted to black. i lightly sanded down the wheels so the white paint was tacky so that the primer would stick, and went over with flat black. i have two problems- some areas i did not sand enough and the paint didnt stick, so some white is visible. next, whenever i remove the rims or center caps, some of the paint chips and leaves a clear white mark. i sprayed no joke about 7 coats of gloss on them, and they still chip. maybe it was because i used regular car spray paint, maybe i will give that dupli color wheel one a try over summer.

here is a pic of the wheels. total cost was around $60 i would say? $3 to get the tires off, $8 to mount the tires and rims and about $15 in spray paint/sand paper etc

hhm.. 7 coats and it still chipped?..

well other than scraping the curb which i dont do.. i can't think of a reason why i would chip mine.. i dont take the center caps off ofthen.

yet also remember that your rims arent pre painted like mine, the steps may be different. but yes my rims chip easily, not even from a curbcheck just a good enough scrape

well if i were to pick any paint the steps should be relatively the same.



use a high grit sand paper and sand down the whole surface..

next primer?... do wheels need primer?

next spray 4-6 coats of paint at 20-30 min intervals

next spray 3-4 coats of clear coat?

done?
