Was hoping for some input on an aftermarket tow hook for my track s13. with my new aero kit the factory tow hooks are covered and i would like to have at least 1 if not 2 hooks that are acessable in case i go off and have to be towed back to the paddock.
Was planning on using something like this

Does anyone have a photo of one installed (bumper off) front or rear?
thanks guys

the easiest way is to weld a bracket.
That is the proper way to install a functional tow hook.
i am using this type on my car for the front.
http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k207/boozels/ferraritowhook.jpg
I cut and removed two of the factory tow hooks for clearance issues with my exhaust and v-mount set up.
The other hooks are kinda worthless on a slammed car with aero.
To much clutter to get in there to hook a strap especially during a track event.
ask me how i know!

Nice looking piece. Mind me asking where it came from, just cause I'm curious how much something like that runs.

^thought the same, but didn't say anything. lol
especially if you are tracking a car to the level you might need a tow hook. By the time your out of donuts and skidpads, single corner drifts, or local autocross,
you should know the answer to questions like this.
Just put it in the most secure place, and cut a hole/slit through your aero. thats what i see most guys doing that dont make there own plate and mount.
Or alot of guys nowdays are running hooks/loops that are made out of cloth materials.

wow guess i didnt make my first post clear enough. all i wanted were pictures of installed towhooks not covered by bumpers. I welded one on today and it works great, not a problem to install, but sometimes other people have good ideas about where to put them that might work better then what i did (although itll work just fine).
lock this shit.

if you need to tow your car just clip off the zipties holding your bumper and attach chain/tow rope to the stock hooks.
if you don't have zipties holding your bumper you are a **SNIP. :l101:

wow!
To the OP.
If you wanted pictures of members towhooks, then you should have started a thread called,
"show your towhooks"
look around the threads, see how people do it.
Of course, a thread like that will be as exciting as a,"show your defrost button" thread.

thanks man. I agree it looks cool, i might end up doing this, not sure yet.
and to the "cut the zipties and remove your bumper"
i could do that, problem is i dont keep sidecuts with me in the car while im on the track. lol. maybe i could, who knows...haha.
I would like the ability to just have the tow driver just hook up to an obvious tow hook so no mistakes are made that would damamge the car anymore then it might already be. this is mostly prompted from last year seeing the workers at an unnamed track nearly destroy a friends STi by hooking up to his front mount pipe (he should have checked i know, but still....) the tow drivers response was "you didnt have a tow sticker so i just hooked it up"

i am sorry i offended your sexuality.
its the quality of the threads i see recently that makes me not want to watch my mouth.
start posting something interesting and i will respond accordingly.
rear tow hooks can be removed, just weld in aftermarket one and cut the bumper.
oh, and you should always have a pair of cutter/snips in the car. helps on the track a lot to have mini tool set.
you install and extra tow hook so you dont kill your bodykit when u get towed, the factory hook sits higher than the base of the lip and the tow strap puts upward pressure on the bottom of the kit and can crack or break it...
it is also easier for the marshalls as they dont have to dig under your front bar when your beached as bro.
to install a tow hook, either straight onto the chassis rail, or space it out with a thick peice of steel box pipe

so... wait... you installed a tow hook where an existing one is.... and you didn't move it out further to ease accessibility? could of just used the decals to point where the stock one is! LOL ! I mean when I install one because i will be ultra low and "racing" i want it to be sticking out of the bumper fucking clear as day that it is meant for towing. yours doesn't even go further than the bumper bar

They bolt to existing threaded holes on the frame rails...
irax have you ever tried to tow a car out of a sandtrap with a factory tow hook before? maybe you should think about you post next time
ill draw a diagram so u can understand
http://i44.tinypic.com/34pdoah.jpg
it sticks out far enough for the Marshalls to access and shackle it fine, have been towed out of sand on many occasions.
the reason it doesnt stick out all the way:
I have respect for my fellow competitors.
have you ever seen what a sticking out tow hook does in even a minor crash?!
It punches straight through whatever you hit, the hook is recessed out of courtesy, If I bump into someone on the track, rather than tear them a new one, the force is spread over the front reo bar, and the damage is reduced.
Ive seen what looked like a minor nose to nose drifting hit, but the tow hook on the following car punched clean through the radiator of the other car.

You're an idiot... to any normal person it would be blatantly obvious how much more convenient his new one is. It doesn't have to be sticking out, just more accessible with aero attached. Please go find some zipties to occupy your time:cj:

then all he needs is stickers pointing to the tow hook if all he wanted was ease of access.

And that would keep the tow straps from ruining his aero how? He put the new one somewhere where nothing would get damaged now. The factory hook is BELOW the bumper, this one is through an opening
lol are you saying that he would crash in such a way that the bumper wouldnt be distroyed or come off anyways? lol i am just saying that if he wanted it to be easy to find that he could of extended it out like majority of actual race cars.
98koukile
02-15-2009, 08:58 PM
He could get stuck in the sand or something, or break down and need a tow. I'm just saying, he added a tow hook without it looking completely ricer and it's more functional than stock. Not everyone has an actual race car or considers their 240 one

I am going to weld one onto the frame on my car that comes out the front bumper so I can tow it with out removing or damaging my lip.

true, but if he doesn't track/race his car then it's more rice than anything because the factory tow hooks work fine and are not hard to get to with some kit bumpers. And if he's stuck in the sand, then he has other issues and the body kit is probably all mangled anyways.

Sorry to bump this thread.
But, I just tracked my car at Laguna Seca and almost got stuck in the sand trap outside turn 11.
A tow hook mounted high would be much easier to access than the factory tow hook buried in the sand.
So, I'm asking clearly. I would like to see how others have mounted an aftermarket tow hook on the front of a pignose S13.
Please stay on topic. Thanks.

And if he's stuck in the sand, then he has other issues and the body kit is probably all mangled anyways.
It is also easy to get stuck after going off track on an incline if the grass is wet or if there is mud. A tow hook is a good idea if you are drifting/tracking your car at a roadcourse. It just is. If you believe otherwise you obviously havent been to enough events yet to understand the benefits.
And if he's stuck in the sand, then he has other issues and the body kit is probably all mangled anyways.
Ive been into the sand about 15 times over the last 2 or 3 seasons, and the aero has only come off once or twice.
I would like to see how others have mounted an aftermarket tow hook on the front of a pignose S13.
you could do it like how I mounted mine, but just find a suitable size of box steel so that its bolted to the chassis rail and positioned in a cutout or air duct in the front bar...

Getting tow hook mounted just above stock one on drivers side so its accessible through my front aero bumper as shown in the paint picture like the other guy Havent figured out how Im doing the rear one probly an extension block welded to frame to bring it down enough that I can hook on to it without having to remove my aero rear bumper
