Today was a long day. I started off by taking my car 3 hours away to get a dyno and tune and come back with 356 hp, drive kinda hard for 3 hours back home and everything is running perfect. I go to a friends house to roll the rear fenders everything goes good. So his dad with a z06 wants to race and of course I accept. We race down the highway and when I get into 5th gear the car doesnt want to go anymore after 4000 rpm and as I slow down my car just turns off. So I try to cluch kick start it and it just dies everytime so I just drive it into a parking lot. I do a little troubleshooting and I cant figure it out.
This is what I got. Fuel pressure is there and spark does seem to be in at least in one cylinder (only check one). All the fuses look good and swiched out some relays and the ignitor with a known working one and nothing. It just sounds like the starter is just spinning. There is compession too. I tried unbolting the ecu and checking for loose wires and nothing. Is there anything else that would explain this? It is an s13 sr.
BTW I only lost by like one and a half car lengths. It is a modded z06 c5 that can tie a c6 z06

This is all 4 spark plugs. #1 being on the left and #4 on the right. #2 and 4 look ok, but #1 is completely destroyed and #3 is missing the tip.

This is a little better look at number one

Nevermind I found the problem and I just want to know how bad is bad. I not a pro but I think I have detonation and I have it bad. Do I need to take the head off to get to where the tip of the spark plug fell or can I just delete the tune and throw in some new spark plugs? If it is really bad can I just drive it one time about 4 miles away?

yup that is detonation.... I am suprised you didn't hear it....
Get a knock sensor.... I am have a review of one come up very soon....
People don't understand that even if you have like 10.5 AFR or 11 AFR your engine can knock because bad timing tuning.....
For now, run better octance and turn down the boost....

what spark plugs are you using?
and the gap?
i say - you ran old spark plugs and you had a very high EGT and you broke the tip's off
your tuning might be fine, surely. unless this guy doesn't know much but then thats quite rare considering it's quite easy with the tools available these days.
swap over some brand new plugs.. get iriway #7 and then you should be fine!! if you damage those plugs then you should put a EGT gauge and monitor your EGT.. maybe you are detonating and or getting too much fuel causing high EGT!

OK deleted the tune and changed ngk bkr7e spark plugs gapped at .028. no start. now what?

After detonation..., your timing is probably way off. Remove valve cover and verify mechanical timing, and re stab cas. Fire it up, time with a light. What did the ecu codes show? knock?
You should have passed on that offer!

Ok thanks a lot. I will pull it off and check tommorow. I dont really know how to check it with a light though, but i do know how to line the dots up. I cant pull any codes off my ecu because it is a j4 ecu and I dont want to spend a bunch of money to get it checked. Should I buy another knock sensor just in case? I wish I did pass up that offer. The tune got me like 3 horsepower too. JWT wasnt that bad of a tune.

umm to check with a light u need a timing light and its pretty straight forward

just line the dots up on the CAS up. ... and make sure your timings correct
15 degree's on SR 20 = the 2nd last dot on the crank pully i believe.

You do know the tune required a specific base time...probably 15deg. that's why you should always set base timing with a light. (idle timing) whatever?
As for the knock sensor... It's important to know what the ecu knows. I like Nissan CONSULT. If you have the time hook it up. I didn't mean a fault code but more like misfire or something. You could have turned off flags for knock and 02. I've seen it before.

I just took off the top and lined everything up the way it is suppose to be and it still will not start. I tested for spark and fuel and everything looks good. I dont know what else to do. If I am getting spark and fuel and battery is strong, what can keep it from starting?
Since I get spark and fuel does that mean my ecu is good. Which fuse or relay should I check or replace? Can a knock sensor stop a motor from starting?

as dumb as it may sound try unplugging the injectors and cranking it over a few times. there may be a ton of fuel in the cylinders. once thats done hook them back up and try to start it.

A "bad" knock sensor is PROBABLY still the issue. IIRC a bad knock sensor will cause the ECU to retard your timing causing you issues (possibly not being able to start). Especially if you had a tune you would be in serious trouble (detonation etc). Since the tune has been removed what are you running exactly? Im assuming injectors etc, I wouldn't be at all suprised if like the previous poster said you have issues with flooding also.

you could always just get ahold of a bore scope and look in the cyl see if there was any damamge done.

When I took out the spark plugs, I stuck a little magnet down in the cylinders and didnt come in contact with any fuel so I dont think I am flooded.
When I say reset the tune, I mean reset the values on my afcneo. I have the jwt tune ecu so it should be good.
I guess I will try to replace the knock sensor and see if that helps. I read the 95 240sx has the same knock sensor, does this sound right?

Do a leak down test, and a compression test - post your results.

Do a leak down test, and a compression test - post your results.
That's exactly what you need to do.
With detonation THAT bad, I expect your pistons to be toast.
No compression = no start.

DING DING DING.
The compression test results are in and 0, 30, 90, 40:duh:
So i guess I will have to take it apart and rebuild when I get back.
I swear my love/hate relationship with my 240sx will kill me one day. Thanks guys.

FUCK!!!...... Sorry to hear that.....
Get someone for realz to tune.... All I can say is that is a nightmare.... good luck

Sounds like who ever dyno tuned your car needs to be shot in the face...
or atleast help you with the rebuild.

Talked to the company and he is saying that there were other things that could be wrong and is going to take no responsibility cause other dont have the same problem.

Yah that is going to be hard to point them for fault, but a gun in the face might help smooth things along!....
