I have always wondered aren't JDM silvia's 6 speeds? I thought they were and they are 6 speeds in Japan.

Also, GT3 has them as 6 speeds.

From the factory only the S15 came with a 6-speed. The S13 and S14 were both 5-speeds.

And before you entertain thoughts of a swap, entertain thoughts of a new driveshaft and rear end... The driveshaft is a different length and the speed sensors are in the rear end on the S15, where they are in the tranny on the 5 speeds...

that's too bad; I had considered the 6....

Always nice to have your bubble popped. :D Those dreams of a 6speed, shot down! ;)

At age 23, I shouldn't really find kicking someone while they are down as funny as I do right now...

I've also heard that the S15 6 speed isn't a great tranny. Supposedly the gears are stronger on the 5 speeds. I hope that's not true and I'll let you guys know how my 6 speed works out when I finally get my car back.

only slightly weaker.. they say the 5-speed is good for 400-450hp.. the 6-speed is good for ~350. still pretty freakin stout.

Didn't blitz have an s15 that dyno'd like 450nat the wheels last year on the stock tranny?

The bellhousings are the same aren't they? Making the gears in the 6 spd thinner and weaker than the 5 spd. You would need to make every gear in the 6 spd thinner/smaller to fit them in the same area as 5 gears.

Well, no, it's a totally new box, and it is longer, hence the need for a new driveshaft.
Personally I just don't see the point; every review I've read of the S15 said the gears were too close, that driving the 6 speed S15 at the limit just requires too much shifting.

Well wouldnt the point of having a 6 speed in a car like that be so you can keep the engine reving higher? The closer the gears, the quicker you max them out, but at the same time you loose less RPM per shift dont you?

yes and yes. It's a compromise between keeping in the power-band and limiting the number of required shifts.

Are those concrete numbers as in people have blown 6 speed trannies at ~350hp or is it just an assumption? I'm wondering if it's really true that the 6-speed is actually weaker. The thinner gear theory doesn't really make sense when you think about it (the gears don't HAVE to be thinner).

there's no such thing as a concrete number when it comes to material failure. A lot depends on how the power is applied, a tranny that can take 1000 smooth Hp may only take 200 while side-stepping the clutch.

no they are not concrete.. those are the Approximate number I've read browsing around the InArN3T. :) Of course I've also seen some guys say there is only negligable difference in strength, and the reason all the Japanese tuners swap to the 5-speed is because the gear ratios are better for they power they put down..
The close gears are proabably wonderful for a STOCK s15, but as soon as your putting 350hp to the wheels, all that changes, as the next gear change would come up mighty fast, and often mid corner where you don't want it. Running outta REVs sucks..
