im currently wiring my car (93 hatch) using a non standard circuit board like the painless stuff you have but without the rape price.but im totally stuck on how to make the lights go up and down.ive been looking in the workshop manual and the standard circuit uses about a million relays is there an easy way to make them work?.
i was half tempted to not wire them in and just wind them up manually but its usually cold and raining here so i would get fed up with that real fast.

Im surprised to see people doing this, very nice I plan on doing this in the near future.
Anyhow, I would just wire it how factory has it and use these relays.
Board Relays from AEI Components (http://www.boardrelays.com)
These parts per relay:
1x - BRSPT
1x - BRS14E
1x - BU5083W
My setup looks like this, however I have not done the painless.

hmmn is there a USA manual floating around on the net as the UK spec one is quite poor when it comes to the headlamps.
i was under the impression that there was 4 relays? one in the main fuse box and 3 in the other (by the air filter)

Yes there are 4 Relays.
H/L RET CONT, H/L RET, H/L RET and H/L RET DOWN.
In the KA24DE manual, check out pages EL-20 and EL-21.

Questions:
1) Why are you rewiring?
2) Do you have the timer for the headlights?
3) How much work are you willing to do and how much are you willing to learn?

He probably is because...
Most likely for simplicity, clean look and only having the necessities as well. You also can shed an ok amount from the car too depending on what items you're eliminating...A/C, Seat Belts, Heater, Interior lighting, fuse boxes and relay boxes.

because my car is far from standard so the stock loom kind of doesn't fit the bill any more plus there is no room in the engine bay anymore for them so im putting all the stuff under the dash behind the glovebox.
its only a weekend toy so does not have much in the way of luxuries.
ive figured most of the other stuff out but this headlamp motor circuit has got me foxed.im quite good at electrics but im no circuit designer.
ive got the headlamp timer and all the OEM wiring
we have a nice saying on this side of the pond 'every day is a school day'

You have a few ways to do it.
The easiest way is to wire everything up exactly as the FSM. You can move the relays and timer (already in the car) into the car and lengthen/shorten wires as appropriate. It should work like stock.
Another way would be to replace stock relays with standard relays. This requires a little modification of standard relays to mimic the functionality of the stock relays.
The most difficult way would be to design your own circuit. It's doable, but you will have to learn how relays and timers work.

i think im just going to copy the standard circuit.the diagrams in your version of the service manual make it more easy to understand.cheers for sparing me a few moments of your time guys.

I'd just leave the headlights up.
