View Full Version : Added too much oil. What should I check?

Embarrassing, I know.

I checked my oil the other day, and there was barely any on the dipstick. I poured one quart in and it still wasn't enough. I poured another quart in, and it was where it needed to be.

I started driving and it started running bad. I knew exactly what happened. The dipstick had been blown slightly out of the block, causing the oil not to register on the dipstick.

I only drove it for about five minutes. It backfired at odd times, smoked, and stuttered on take-offs.

I drove it back home, drained all the oil, and filled it to the proper amount. I also added Sea Foam to help clean the engine. I put new spark plugs in because one kept fouling out, causing it to run on three cylinders.

Since then, I've driven the car about 100 miles. It doesn't smoke as bad, but there is still some smoke at take-offs. It still stutters a bit as well. I may possibly have an oil leak, too. This could be an unrelated problem, but now after my car warms up, my clutch feels rough and it's difficult to get it in gear.

I'm going to drive it more before I do anything drastic, but in the meantime:

What should I check? I know adding too much oil can blow out seals, but where should I look?
How do I check the rear main seal?
How can I tell if the valve stem seals are damaged?
How long should I burn oil before I think there is a problem?
What's 1+1?

It's a KA-T, if that matters.

It's also possible that cavitation due to over oiling caused you to oil starve your turbo or other parts of your motor.

I believe the turbo is okay. There was nothing out of the ordinary when I checked it.

I did a compression check and everything seems to be fine in that area as well.

according to your post there was nothing mentioned about overfilling?

Basically, the dipstick tube was about a half inch or so out of my engine block, causing the oil not to show up. I put two quarts in because I thought it was low.

I've never seen adding too much oil to be a problem

Cuz the pick up is at the very bottom of the pan and always under the oil

and there is never a time to where the oilpump is not or needs not to pump oil

Ive over filled mine a few time but... not two quarts worth

I could possibly see maybe over pressureizing maybe.... but i dont know how it would
Cuz the oil pumps are equipt with relief valves

In KA-T the oil drain is on the oil pan and if you over filled it the oil wouldn't be able to flow freely from the turbo and it might cause the oil seal to go bad i believe thats the cause of the smoke, take a look at it and i Hope this helped.

Did you do an oil change after you added the Sea Foam?? If not, you should change your oil as it breaks down your oil's ability to lubricate.

I overfilled my SR once and it had smoke coming out and since I let some of the extra oil out, it hasn't smoked since.

I checked with a local turbo shop, and they said my turbo was fine. Thanks for the input.

I added the Sea Foam in the gas tank after I changed my oil. Do you still think it will break down the ability for the oil to lubricate properly?

thats prob why its smoking, b/c it hasnt burnt off all the seafoam in the gas tank, seafoam makes it smoke like crazy

It's a KA-T, if that matters.

There is an inspection cover on the rear of the upper pan. If there is oil in there, your rear main is f'd.

usually puffin smoke on startup and take-offs is an indication of leaking valve stem seals

i think it's enough evidence to conclude that there is a problem...

3?

So adding too much oil could have damaged the valve stem seals? I've thought from day one the valve stem seals were done for but wasn't sure. It smokes when I start it and when I take off.

Do I have to pull the head to check/replace the valve stem seals?

Also, do you guys think the problem with the clutch is related to this issue?

Dip stick not in place kind of sounds like blow by to me

If it's in the gas tank, there shouldn't be much smoke at all, from what I remember doing myself.

You don't have to pull the head off to do the replace the valve stem seals per say, but you would need to pressurize the cylinders to check or replace the valve stem seals with the head still on the block.

SeaFoam in the gas doesn't cause smoking.

it CAN cause smoking, but usually its so minor that you dont notice it. I've had it smoke when put in the gas of my old pickup truck, but none of the 3 KA cars in the driveway have smoked when its in the gas.
its not going to be like the awe inspiring plumes that come out of your tailpipe when you put it in the vacuum line, though

I live by seafoaming all my cars. The only time it will smoke is when you add it to the vacuum lines to the intake. If you add it to the gas tank i promise no smoke. If you add it to your oil....DRAIN THE OIL AFTERWARDS!!!! Seafoam is a great cleaner but it turns engine oil to Pee Pee. I have no input on your problem...just future with a good product :).

Most good synthetics will already have good enough detergents to clean the oil. BITOG forums do not like seafoam.

Dont put that shit in your oil

That's correct.

I was thinking that as well.

Great. I really wasn't looking forward to taking the head off. Maybe I should dip into the wheel fund and buy some cams while they're off. :coolugh:
