hi guys,
i was under my car today and i was looking thru wires and what not. I decided to peel off the electrical tape around the female(i think) harness for my 5th gear sensor on the tranny. To my suprise. while in the middle of unraveling the tape, the wire just separated and saw that the wires from the sensor were just wrapped around each other and taped to the harness.. so basically i was driving around all this time with out a 5th gear sensor..
now, what could be potential problems if my 5th gear sensor is not even wired in?

No. the main reason why that sensor is disconnected would be to get rid of the rev limit at 5,000 rpm's. Otherwise, your car will just bounce on the rev at 5k and won't go higher. I don't believe there is any danger at all disconnecting that sensor.

I never connected mine, no harm, no foul

It's used for the speed limiter, not the rev limiter. Basically if the ECU sees 120MPH in 5th gear it cuts fuel. Not seeing those inputs, you have no speed limiter. It has no other purpose and can be deleted.

Speed limiter and in some cases rev limiter. My friends coupe some how was set to limit the revs at 5,000 RPMS, and disconnecting the 5th gear sensor worked. I think it had somthing to do with the ECU thinking it was in 5th gear all the time so it stopped the revs at 5k RPMS,which would in 5th gear be correct, limiting the speed to about 120mph, but in the other gears incorrect. I've seen it happen on a couple of cars.

A bad or disconnected switch wouldn't limit the revs in any gear unless the car was also doing 120MPH. A functional switch only limits in 5th gear, and only at 120MPH. So even if the ECU saw a constant 5th gear input all the time it wouldn't trip until reaching 120MPH. Your 'friend' had another issue not pertaining to the switch at all.

Haha great thread, very helpful, mine has been cut since I bought my car, I was just too lazy to ever ask if it mattered. Now my questions have been answered as well as the OP.
