Tranny grinding after redline MT90 GL4

my car: s13 with redtop SR20DET
i have done the research and i know that sr20 5 speed uses GL4. also everyone prefer redline MT90 75w-90. therefore, when i m changing my diff fluid, i bought my redline MT90 75w 90 GL4. put it in, and now its much harder to shift!!!! what the hell is going on? it almost like not pressing the clutch far enough. so i adjusted the pedal, didnt work. now i have to wait a little between shift. if i shift too fast, it will grind sometimes.
i bought the car with the SR swap and it was shifting smoothly. didnt know what fluid it was.
now i m stuck. i dont no what to do because i already put the right fluid.

ALSO, i have done a clutch job on my friend's smooth shifting KA recently and put GL4/GL5 capable oil after. it did the same as my SR. hard shifting and if force it to shift fast, grind.
PLEASE HELP! i m scared to change tranny fluid now.

ive used MT90 for YEARS (at least 6 years) on KA and Sr trannies w/ no issues
check your fluid levels

2.5 bottles is what it supposed to be like he said, you could also try penzoil synchromesh, it is way cheaper then royal purple and takes away 3rd gear grind in KA tranny's, it works wonders

this is what I use, it may be a little scratchy cold but when warmed up.. works very well IMO

im in the same boat you are in. Will be changing mines when i get my check this weekend. Royal purple synchro mesh. hopefully it will get better.

yup! i seem to get better after running a while. problem appears in cold driving.
i put almost 3 bottle/3 qt. and the car was level with 4 stands so can make sure it has enough fluid.
will it be master or slave cylinder related?

2.5 bottles/qts.over filling isn't a good idea.

How cold is i where you live??

cant really over fill it. If you do the fluid just pours out. Which is when you know you got enough.

It probably won't cause any actual damage. There's a chance it could cause a leak out of the input shaft seal or the tail seal.

It might make shifting slightly heavier.

dunno if it matters but yes the tranny uses gl4 while the diff uses gl5 oils.

yup yup 2.5 and your good i use redline mt90 but im lookin in to synchromesh still have a grind gettin into 3 at high rpms but no biggie

Confusing... but is the OP talking about his transmission or the diff? Reposted info but 2.5qt 75w90 gl4 for trans and 2qt 80w90 gl5 for diff carrier. Oh and not everyone prefers redline.

I had a similar experience with redline mt90 so I went with redline MTL and my trans shifts like butter.

Over fill = fluid blowing through the vent tube on the trans.

hey guys just as weissguy said even if is overfilled it will just blow out the vent tube on the top, and possible front or rear tail seal. Overfilling is is ok as you will possibly have heavy shifting and wont damage the trans but end up with gear oil on the floor as it is thick and sticky and you dont want to clean that trust me.
Now there is a couple of possibilities where the clutch is starting to get worn your trans will have a hard time shifting. This is a fact when these clutches get worn with stock clutches trans will get harder to shift as it wears then goes to slipping as it gets worse.
second is where you live and what type of gear oil you are using. normal cali temps are usually warm and 80/90 would be typically what most use on these trannies. Check with fsm with temps and what to use.
third thing it could be is MOST OF US now im not saying everybody but most tend to quick shift hardshift etc into gears.
I know blah blah shud up and get to point. lol
just keep reading. Inside of the tranny is whats called syncronizers. what they do is when you start changing gears it touches the next gear to bring it up to speed with the previous gear so the gears can mesh, instead of just a spinning gear touching a non spinning gear which would cause what?? cmon take a guess yes grind
Well syncros (short term word) tend to get worn down as they get used and abused depending on the person abusing it. cmon everybody loves to quickshift. lol
Now everybody knows synthetic is a special lube that everybody loves to use lol and know what synthetics are. if you dont look it up as you are outdated.
put worn syncros and synthetics together what happens SLIP! syncros cant get the next gear up to speed fast enough and GRIND!. i hope you arnt tired of reading.

NOOW IM NOT SAYING YOUR TRANS IS FUCKED!! READ FURTHER

you can try out different types of fluid as different companies have differend formulas. and also if you like the brand you are using try a different weights of oil as they have different heat ranges. Most will notice that shifting gets better as car warms up. but try different brands and weights. trust me it will work. workking at a trans shop for years.... i hated doing clutches with all the burnt clutch dust.... so try it out. if anything needs to be corrected just correct me if im wrong. im willing to learn too.
