I just put the shifter in, the trans shifts to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th with ease, however it is very hard to get it into 4th, and the trans will not go into reverse.

I have not installed clutch pedal/master cyl... - i'm hoping thats the problem. The car is not running yet either.

Tell me my synchros might still be good please!

eh?

Its just odd, i've never experienced that with SR.... this is my first serious RB build

With no load on the input/output shafts, trans should shift normally. In my experience, the fact that it doesn't means there is something wrong. I'm no trans expert though.

Dunno man it's been my experience that without clutching in the the shifter may not always go in every gear. Sometimes it will sometimes it won't. Get it hooked up and check it out...

sometimes i could get rb missions to go into gear with not pushing the clutch.

BUT sometimes i couldnt get all the gears in.

i think your fine.

I wanna see what ProjectRDM has to say about it...

mine would barely go into any gear except 1st and 3rd when i first swapped it. asked one of my more knowledgable mechanic friends and he said that its pretty common for trannys that have been sitting for excessive amounts of time. just drive it. it will get into gear when its all hooked up and you drive, but hard to shift. just have to drive it.

im no tranny expert but ive also read people with a similar situation to urs and a shift fork was loose/broken or misaligned.

Thats kinda a relief to hear, but my trans barely goes into 4th, you have to push it hard as hell and it won't go into reverse at all... Its funny cause i thought it would go into all gears when I bought the engine set... but maybe i was checking a different engine i was examining.

I'm throwing out symptoms here so bear with me, I can't actually figure what it could be, these are just things it couldn't be.
I bought a transmission that had been dropped and two of the forks were actually engaged at the same time, making gear change very hard in certain gears, but only the ones on those two forks. But since 4th and reverse are on different forks that's not it. If the clutch wasn't aligned or the T/O bearing had come off you couldn't get into any gear, so that's not a culprit either. If the shifter was put in while the car was in gear you'd have one fork on each side not lined up, so that can't be it. Assuming all that I'd say it's fine, just needs the input/output shaft rotated a little.

So should i get down spin the drive shaft see if it changes?

Yes, with it in gear and out. Can't hurt.

Turned drive shaft, everything fine, now i cant shift in 5th ;)

still cant get it in reverse but i prolly just gotta get the car moving.

i think all is well... btw... why are you so damn smart?

Years of practice.

The block rings are not always in alignment with the gears. What the syncros are for. When you try to dry shift you may not always get all the gears. Spinning the input shaft should get the sycros in a more favorable alignment with the block rings.
