YIKES!

I can't wait to get that crap out of my car. A/C's been dead for a while, I just never bothered to remove everything.

S13 auto seatbelts are upwards of 25 lbs.. I forgot exactly how much. The s14 belts I put in were less than 3lbs each.

Isn't it illegal to pull the auto belts out of the s13 and put anything else in?

[that's a funny question coming from me...with the SR and all]

Technically - yes - the S13's motorized seat belts are considered "passive restraints" under federal law and are required on passenger cars produced after 9/88.

But like a lot of things, if your state has no safety inspection program, or your safety inspections don't check for it, then there's nothing to worry about. A police officer isn't likely to know that S13s came with automatic belts, or that removing automatic belts is illegal. He'll just see that you're wearing a belt.

wassup everyone,
just welcome to be aboard on the zilvia.net forum. I not sure if this has been discussed before. But i just had a question on the motorized seat belts on the 89 240sx. Somebody correct me, but according to one other friend who drives a 240sx, supposedly he had the seat belts replaced from the nissan dealer, 100% free with no charge? Did those years ever had a recall or something? The reason im sharing this is because the motorized seat belts(driver side) on the 240sx im driving, is slowly going out, because the belt would sometimes stop half way, or would never retract? So yea, anyone's 50 cent on this issue would be greatly appreciated...thanks everyone...!!

Belts are replaceable for the life of the car at the dealer and airbags are 10 years if anyone cares....But you just bumped a thread over 2 years old that was about the weight of an a/c compressor/lines to ask this.

but other cars after 9/88 dont have auto belts like most other cars in existance. why would it be illegal to just go to shoulder and lap belt.

It's required to have a "passive restraint" system in your vehicle. Thats why you could put a 5 pt harness and still be considered legal. It doesn't matter what kind of seat belt system you have, as long as you have one. At least thats how it is here in CO, don't know about anywhere else.

Since we're on the subject and I always wondered about this, I did some research. In 1984, the DOT put out a proposal that unless 3/4 of the states passed seat belt laws, that by 1989, all auto makers would be required to put automatic seat belts in their cars. That's why almost all cars sold in the early 90s/very late 80s have stupid automatic seat belts. Once the states passed the seat belt laws, they were no longer required to put the most stupid "safety" invention ever devised into all of their models.
