View Full Version : No striker on my FRP hood, so WTF now?

not sure what to do really. i thought the striker (pretty sure that's what it's called) from my oem steel silvia hood would swap over to my frp hood i picked up. the frp doesn't have one and i'm not sure if it was supposed to or not, but i don't see any way to swap the striker from steel hood to the frp hood per the pic below. so am i screwed. i looked around, didn't see anything about this in any threads and looked around the net a bit and didn't see this part sold by itself or other aftermarket hoods saying anything about not coming with the striker or anything. so, kinda lost here. i'm obviously going to use hood pins, but i wanted to have both hood pins and the factory latch/striker.

Cut out the striker from the stock hood. Bolt onto the FRP hood.

You shouldn't rely on the striker alone though. You need pins.

good luck Silverstreek if you do try to get the factory one on, let us know how it works out.

i can't really cut it out though, since i'm selling the steel hood, can't have it all chopped up. ughh.... why do i have a feeling i've wasted money on this frp hood.

Just run the pins by themselves. It will be just fine if you get proper ones.
I use these. They are the shit.

i've seen those. i was just gonna go with sparco's, but those might be worth looking into. i still dunno though, i'd think it'd need the latch as well. kinda like how it's not really safe to run just a frp or cf hood with just the latch, i'd think it'd be the same with just running hood pins and no latch. if there were a way to remove that striker from the steel hood without hacking up/damaging it so i can still sell it (though that'd kinda screw over the person who's wanting to buy it) i'd do it. but looks as though i'm gonna have to think of something else or try and fab something else up.
if i knew who made the hood i could always contact the company and ask their opinion. but i don't see any marks or lables on it (i bought it used and it's primered black, so i can't see anything).
i dunno....

some race cars dont have latches.

You need hoodpins anyways, might as well get some locking ones.. better then having some fiberglass striker made by whoever made the hood.. that would more than likely fall off some point in time. and than delete this thread so no one knows they can jus go up and unhook ur pins lol.

The latch on FRP hoods are glued on. Sometimes the glue can become undone and the hood can fly up. It's much safer to use pins than just latch alone.

For street use I would recommend locking pins, but for race use I would not. Sometimes you need to get under the hood in a hurry and the locking pins can slow you down.

That happen to me once on the freeway... Driving blind at 70mph in traffic is not fun.

The latch is more for security reasons IMO, most hood pins can be undone pretty easily, the latch still needs to be popped from within the car. Also the added knowledge that I dont have to worry about driving blind on the highway and/or cracking a windshield is a plus.

yeah, this car is going to be track only. only time it may ever see the street again is if i had no other way to get it somewhere to get something done. and even then it'd be at speeds of 45 mph or less and not for a long distance.

Man, stop acting like a lil girl. Spend the money on some quality hood pins, install it properly and you should not have any issue. As long as you dont Mickey Mouse the shit, it should be as safe as it can be.

Plus think of the weight saving you get by taking the latch off...:ddog:

Ok OK i understand where you are coming from OP....But My Fiberglass hood was more than stable with some quality pins. Splurge and get the Aerocatch mentioned earlier, I believe Ken with Enjuku racing.com has a good deal on locking ones as well.
