Ok so basically I started thinking about the whole sr20 swap and how much I would end up paying, where to get it, etc but then I thought about emissions for some odd reason. I decided to look it up and I did a search on the site. Did a little bit of reading I guess you can get it to pass the sniffer but not the visual (california) I mean is it even worth the trouble? If I cant get it to pass visual I am kinda ****ed I am thinking about buying a KA24DE now and turbo'ing it I have not really read up on this yet but is it the same thing when it comes to the visual part of emissions or will I be ok with the KA24DET? I know this crap has probably been asked so much im sorry guys I used the search and only got a couple good tips of information so I wanna get this all straightened out so I can decide the most logical way to go about doing this.

yea this topic comes up every once in a while, but instead of bein one of those people that just says to use the search, im actually gonna give u some helpful info. yea its illegal, but alota people with sr20s say that they bribe the smog guy to pass them. its even better if you know some one that works at a smog checkin place. one guy i know and some other people online say that they just swap their ka24 back in every time they need to smog. i also heard that in CA their is a mobile smog checker or sumthin like that, but i dont have any info on that (if any one knows i'd like to know about that too). theres 1 thing that i was wondering about though. has any1 here been caught by the police for their sr, rb, or other illegal engine? im just wondering what kinda trouble your in for if your caught. yea every1 says that a cop probably doesnt know the diff between a ka and a sr if his life depended on it, but the cops r gettin smarter. i also heard about a book that has pictures of all the stock engines of certain cars bein used in CA. is that true?
PS: living in CA sux
one other thing, it would probably the eziest if you swap your engine right after you smog it, so that way you dont need to worry about smog checks for another 2 years.
hope that helps a lil

here's how I figure it, if your 240 is a 95+ and as low milage and wanna be on the safe side go for the turbo, of course adding turbo and all sorts of other crazy mods ain't really street legal ethier:rolleyes: but what can ya do..
if the car's got hella miles go for the SR IMO,
of course now you'll run into the problem of the endless battle of KA vs. SR engines. Ethier way if are willing to spend 5-6k on engine mods, you'll have fun ethier way
But, I'm also curious about what would some cop do if all of a sudden he's like "open the hood boy" and knows what u got isn't street legal. My biggest fear is that they would impound my preacious and I will never see her again

I remember reading somewhere, sometime ago about the idea of registering your car in a place that doesn't do smog (certain counties or other states), you just need a place for mail/registration to be sent like a family/friend/relative?... Not sure, like I said, read about it a while ago...

As much of this crap that comes up no one (I mean no one) has ever heard of anyone getting busted for an SR. But to the best of my knowledge and an uncle that is a Sherriff in PA:
1. The car will be impounded
2. You will have 30days to pay massive fines and put the correct engine back in
3. If those criteria are not met the car will be crushed
The car will pass smog if you keep all of the emissions systems in the vehicle - i.e. carbon canister, cat, stcock ecu.
As far as visual the guy that does my checks on my other cars wouldn't know an SR if it jumped up and bit him on the a$$. As long as you don't put a t3/t04e on a top mount manifold and have Greddy stickers all over the engine bay. They won't know it's modded in the first place.
Use common sense! If you weren't into Nissans would you know what an SR looked like...or hell what an SR was in the first place

I think I remember reading about that out of state registration thing as well. I wish they would bring the sr20 to the US god what a hassle. I still am unsure what im gonna do I love the 240 but I dont want to have to deal with stupid **** like this if I swap in a new engine. BTW someone said something about they match up the codes or numbers on the block and on the chassis are these numbers engraved in the block or is it like a steel plate that you can just take off. I know im probably an idiot and the only reason I dont go look is because its kinda pouring outside atm ill look later if no one responds but I mean **** if its a plate of some sort couldnt you just slap it onto the sr20 from the ka and then its all set and done.

You'll be in just as much trouble if you remove them. Also the serial number on the SR is under the exhaust manifold and due to the large amount of ic piping and turbo being in the way you can't see it without at least 4hrs of dissasembling
