Sup everyone, not new to the board but my first post, awwwwww....i know. Ok anyway the thing is, bout a month or two ago i purchased a nismo 2way lsd for my S13. Starting yesterday, me and my friends finished getting it in tonight. We took out my entire pumpkin, took off the plate, took out the stock open diff, took off the ring and bearings, put them on the nismo lsd, put it back in the pumpkin, etc etc you get the idea.
So we put the pumpkin back on my car, started it up and spun the wheels. Great everythin worked!! We lowered my car and started out to test drive. It was fine, all the rumors and things people said about lsd's making alot of noise soon vanished as we went down the road; there was no noise at all!! So we pulled into a parking lot (after driving about 2 miles and i havnt gone over 3000 rpms at all) and i started doing little figure eights to break it in. Did about two 8's and it started making a clunkinig noise...thought that was normal. Then all of a sudden it started making a constant clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink noise when ever i was moving. Kinda like the gears aren't connecting right.
So basicly, the problem is that in a straight line, theres no noise....everything is fine. But the second i turn the wheel clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink. It dosnt sound normal, and its really loud. Is this normal?? Is it part of the breaking in process??

first of all. is your LSD new or used?
how long did you break it in for?
did you change your fluid since the break in?
ddi you use an LSD additive (will quiet it down)?
if those dont work, then take it to a pro. domestic shops should be able to help you too, since they use various types of LSDs.

Yes, its brand spankin new straight from nismo. I only broke it in as i said in my story: I drove it out of the nieghborhood, down the street about 2 miles, then into a parking lot to do figure eights; did about two 8's then its started making that noise. And yes i put new oil in (vavoline 80W90) and no i havnt put in an additive yet.
My question is: is this sound normal?; and mainly im trying to get some feedback from some people who have an lsd: how does thier lsd sound? how did it sound when you first put it in?

what was your break in process? is it in the directions included or thru another source?
my current LSD was used
but i have a Nismo SSS (1.5 and 2 way selectable) coming mid march.
also clutch LSDs engage and disengage a lot in turning. could be that too, bt that's more of a clunking (metal on metal sound).

no directions and dont really have a process. i just read that a standard break in process was to do a couple of figure 8's and drive around in low rpms like you have a new car. I didnt know there were specific break in processes for each different kind and/or brand of lsd; is there?

ahh ****
nah there is a very important break in process
http://www.kaazusa.com/
specifically:
on this page
http://www.kaazusa.com/answers.html
READ THE WHOLE PAGE!!!
and more qs answered
be sure to re-break it in because:
The best to break in and remove the noise is by driving in a “figure 8” pattern as shown below for about 30 minutes and let the plates rub in to form a good fit. If this initial break in is not performed and too much torque is applied to the L.S.D. at once, the plates will form strange angles. Then the chattering noise will continue and may even cause damage to the L.S.D.

Oh man, thanks, just what i was looking for. Haha, you don't know how relieved i am, i thought somthing was seriously borken. Also, what brand/kind of oil and additives would you guys recommend?

redline makes one
so does mopar (it doesnt mattre if its a domestic additive, clutch LSDs are clutch LSDS)
my friend uses redline
i dont use any, but i have a mehcanical right now
when i get my new nismo sss, i'll use redline as well
be sure to change your fluids regularly especially when the LSD is new
my suggestoin: change your fluid AGAIN after you break it in. cleas out the gunk that might be on the shims. also wil keep it running smooth. lsds arent cheap
but yo, give some more info on your LSD. where'd you get it? clutch type? 1, 1.5 or 2 way?
thanks and good luck! hoepfully that'll fix your problem! ENJOY!
LSD=the BEST mod anyone can do to their car. without a doubt. f*ck wheels tires and coilovers. LSD is the greatest. and not that VLSD crap. REAL LSD ownz

In that diagram, it says floor the clutch in the turns? So just coast while im turning and only accelerate in the straightaway?
And in the middle it says "...for each gear." How am i supposed to do that at only 30kph?
Dousan_PG
02-24-2003, 10:33 PM
yeah just clutch in and coast
each gear, um..not sure on that. you can do 3rd gear and 4th. it wont run smooth but i think the reason for that is because of the clutch in part. make wider arcs if you can, but you should be able to do a 4th gear go (and 5th) just wont run like it does in 2nd.

Accually when i bought it i was a real noob to lsd's and how they work. I jus knew that it was really good (that sounds so stupid but anyway) I got it from a Nissan dealership brand new. (no im not freakin rich, i got a deal)
But for sure its a 2 way; most definatly mechanical (according to that Kaaz website and the sound mine's making)

cool
glad to see you buy a LSd instead of crap performance parts. no mattre how much power you make you need a LSd.
if you want to drift/drag you need a LSD
LSD imho is the most vital part of car. gladto see you spend money on that rathre then something else
best of luck. enjoy the LSD. i cant live w/o mine. the reason i am upgrading mine ot a more agressive one. :) hehe..i love LSD!!
cool! so now let's see some photos of your car, and some specs. :) What are your plans for it? Race or show or what? How much (if you don't mind me asking) DID you pay for it, and did that include output shafts? or did you already have vlsd? :D

I really want to get my lsd soon. Thinkn about a Kaaz 2way. As for the output flanges, I need to get S14 w/vlsd ones correct? Dousan, got any info about the Nismo SSS? advantages are...switchable ways? Doesn't also use more plates or sumtn. Do you plan to select 1.5 for daily driving and 2 way for drifting? QUESTIONS GALORE!! :D

i was thinking of getting LSD for drag purposes, since it helps get off the line. at first i was thinking NISMO 2way..but it cost 1000shipped..im sure i dont need a 2way..probably juss a 1way is good enough. but i plan to do some other things to my car as well..as leanring how to drift..juss for the hell of it..and autoX as well. juss to have better skills with manual
so im still unsure of which way to go with.

nismo SSS is 1.5 and 2 way selectable. it has 40% increased engagement over the standard nismo 2 way, more clutch plates as well
engages faster and harsher, locks harder. just what i want. not too streetable it seems. its the same koguchi, nomuken, kazama, etc pro d1 drivers use.
why'd i buy it? i want the top. i dont want to have to upgrade in a few years. LSD=done. i should have it about mid march and on the car by april 6 RS*R drift event. SWEET
oh to adjust it is a bitch. have to drop the diff and take out side shaft and such. im leaving it two way all the time.

Good stuff...sounds like top of the line = $$$!
Anyways, you going to install yourself? Probably shop right. Man, I want to get mine soon!! Is signing up for the driftshowoff event in march closed already? If i could get my lsd in by then and break it in, I would love to enter the event. ahh ahhh *panic*
Aaron, you also have a PM

well adey no photos yet (digital camera broken  ) Specs?! haha. Im a poor drifter, cars basicaly stock. I have an Injen short ram intake that i grabbed from my friends wrecked 240 for $50, my *sigh* Nismo LSD, and uhhhhhhhhh some nice air fresheners hahaha.
My cars purely for drift/race (not normal "street racing" as most think :p anyone can go in a straight line. I dont belive in that.) Even though im making it a Sil-Eighty later on.
I DID pay for it yes. I pay for my car and everything on it. Cant say how much it was, cause i got a really good deal on it from my friend and he might get in sh1t if i say. (hes on this forum too btw) and no i didnt buy new output shafts. I jus bought the lsd it self, no pumpkin, no nothin. If u read my first post i said how i did it (briefly)

Ok, back on subject. I broke in my lsd bout an hour ago, and it's still makin NOISE!!! It's not getting worse (i think) but its still the same clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink clink.
But going straight it dosnt make the noise. It only happens when im turning.
I might think the problem is the output flanges. Are there newer ones that you have to buy when u put in a new lsd? Like flanges made for lsds??? Can't you use the stock ones??

I don't know about light clinking noises, but my mystery clutch-type lsd makes huge clunking noises in part-throttle low speed turns. Tried all sorts of gear oil to quiet it down including Kaaz oil, but Redline 80W-140 has worked the best so far. It might help you out.

Thanks orange-grey, that's the next oil i was gonna try.
Im just glad to know that all that noise back there is a normal thing.
So does anyone know anything about the output flanges? If i have to change them cause they make different flanges for open diffs and lsds?? I just think its wierd that the noise ONLY happens while im turning? Is this normal too?

um..im pretty sure you need certain type of output shafts w/ LSDs, call KAAZ USA tomorrow and ask about it. they might know/be able to help you. KAAZ is hella cool and knowledgable

what output flanges are you currently running with your Nismo LSD?

The stock ones, just took the ones out of the pumpkin that were workin with the open diff and used them on my new lsd. Thats my problem, im not sure if this setup is ok.

pretty sure that it is NOT right. you'll kill your LSD's gears/teeth. i say search Japan Nismo site www.nismo.co.jp
maybe email them as well, sometimes they reply/understand english

Holy Sh1t! Well.....im not driving my car for a while
Well has anyone here had the same problem? Anyone had to replace thier output flanges when they put in lsd?
ZodiacSR
02-26-2003, 02:38 PM
Its a given to change your output flanges to LSD ones when putting in LSD. I forgot which side, but the open differential flange is a little bit longer then a LSD flange. Call a Nismo distributor for info. Good luck, let us know how it turns out.
zODIAC
:D May I refer you to the current thread "LSD Complications"... there should be (almost) all the info you need there.
have fun dismantling your LSD; I hope you didn't already kill anything!
