NEW YORK (WABC) -- A delivery van backed into a large group of pedestrians Thursday, including a group of pre-school students, on a Chinatown sidewalk, killing two people and injuring 13 others.
The victims were hit by the van as it backed into the front of a restaurant on East Broadway, near Catherine Street, just after 11:30 a.m.
Witnesses said the van appeared to be trying to make a U-turn on East Broadway when it careened onto the sidewalk.
"He must've put his foot on the gas pedal because of the way it happened so fast," said Catherine Montalvo.

Another witness, Alma Torres said, "He hit the gas instead of the brake. He was going unusually too fast. He backed up, jumped the curb and banged into the children."
The driver got out, but the vehicle began to move without anyone at the wheel.
The van backed into a large group of pedestrians, including children and adults.
"He accelerated so fast that all you heard was boom, bang, screaming and hollering," said Montalvo.
Many were pre-school students, walking and holding hands in "daisy chain" formation while accompanied by adult supervisors.
A four-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene and a five-year-old boy later died at New York Downtown Hospital.
Chief Medical Officer Warren Lecht said, "There were extraordinary effort. Our emergency room team consisting of physicians, nurses, ems workers all tried heroically to do the best they could to save this child's life."
A third is listed in critical condition was taken to Bellevue Medical Center.
As many as 13 others, children and adults, were treated for various minor injuries.
The children were walking from a library visit back to the Red Apple Child Development Center at 25 Market Street.
Police closed a block of East Broadway for the investigation. The grey van, with the name of catering company China Catering, was at rest on the sidewalk.
Chinese interpreters were requested to the scene for the victims.

you know what make things worse...Chinese New Year is right around the corner...and this shit happens..I can't imagine how devastated the parents going to be...And I have a 4 yr old niece at home going to preschool 15 mins away from there...My bro works a half a block away from the scene...For those who been to chinatown, that block is packed....its like busting a u turn on times square...THIS FUCKIN IMMIGRANT THAT DROVE THE VAN SHOULD BE PUNCHED IN THE BALLS 100000x

Something like that happened last year in Chinatown in Chicago. A semi truck barrelled into a packed bus stop and took out one of the supports for the L (the train), ironically killing two and injuring 19. Poor kids, what a horrible scene for a class of preschoolers to have seen.

Well i'm not surprised, technically it was an accident the most they can do is give him a moving violation...

you forget, Japanese drivers make F1, the best of the best.. sadly no f1 world titles have been won by a japanese driver yet...

Im sure they released the driver, but he will still have to go to trial... My friend was in a simular situation where he was driving around a corner and some kids where in the street and he hit em, one later died from injuries... He was released/no jail.. but he was up for trial. They proved that there have been simular accidents at the spot of his incident and the city didnt have sidewalks, just dirt run off, so he didnt do any time. And now they have sidewalks and signs there. Im not saying that the driver of this topic should get away , he will face trial and investigations just like my friend did, and the court will determine the outcome.

How about this, average asian person sucks at driving.

Bar china (carnage at every other street corner), in my exp asians are a lot better drivers in asia. now asian american, and/or asian fob in the usa being generally poor drivers i can certainly agree with. here in los angeles, the worst drivers are in the san gabriel valley and korea town no question. I don't think its a racial thing. I think its more of a cultural thing.

There was a guy who was driving absolutely smashed at 4pm, drove up onto a persons lawn and took out a 11yr old kid on the sidewalk

They later picked up the guy doing 60 in a school zone and the 1st thing he said was "Did I kill that kid?" - yes, he smeared the kid all over the neighborhood.
