View Full Version : LSD ...personal choice??

First post. I'm officially an S-Chassis owner again. :hsdance: I just recently bought an S13 240SX hatch.

I'm looking into purchasing an LSD's. My past S-Chassis was a 180SX from Japan. It came with an upgraded Nismo LSD...at least as far as I was told it did. I never knew which LSD it actually had though so it might have just been a factory LSD.

Regardless, I'm looking for suggestions. This 240SX of mine isn't going to be a dedicated drift car. It will be a daily driver for the summer months.

I'm not overly sure that a 2 way LSD would be the way to go. I was leaning more towards a 1.5 way.

What types of LSD's are you guys using for your DD's??

All suggestions welcome on specifics brands as well. I'm looking for something new preferably. Yet nothing over $2-$3K.

Wow, that's great. Thanks for the reassurance.

What hasn't been asked before? The reality is opinions change, products change, preferences change.

Ya there are a ton of threads on LSD's, what I'd like to know is what's good NOW though. What's a daily driven LSD look like these days for the S13's. Throw me some slack I've been out of the S-Chassis loop for five years now.

I had two s14's and ran two different 2-ways as daily drivers. 1 of them was the cusco type mz and the other is the kazz 2way. As for daily drivers, the kaaz didn't chatter and clunk as much as the cusco one. I guess I would say the KAAZ two way is probably more economical as far as smoothness goes....but if all you're doing is using it as a daily driver, it'll be pointless to get one anyways.

This is a rare time Ill recommend a vlsd. If is just going to be a street car and you dont want 1 wheel peels just get a vlsd.

If you really want a real lsd and want it for street use get a carbonetics. A little pricey but it wont be as annoying as others.

Sure lot's have changed, but LSD's haven't changed very much over the past few years. Same companies are still out there, just little improvements.

I daily with a Tomei 2-Way. It's about 3 years old.

I should have mentioned that my drift car has a tomie 2 way that I recently installed. I have put only a hand full of miles on it though. I broke it in as recommended with regular rear end greese and have filled/emptyed it like 2 times. Its probably only got 150 miles on it. Do you always run the tomie greese in it? Im going to put it in soon but wondered how often you change the fluid and what kind you use. Thanks

My diff has thousands of miles on it. ahha. I have NEVER run the Tomei oil. It's too expensive. Kaaz oil will work with it, and it's just like the Tomei oil...recommended but super expensive.

The best setup that I have ever run was conventional 75w90 with a little bottle of Ford Friction Modifier. You can get it at any Ford dealership. It makes the clunking go away pretty much completely.

NEVER use synthetic oil in your diff. It's bad for the clutches.

I kinda neglect my diff, in that I don't change the fluid very often. One because it's hard to get to, and two cause it's a pain in the ass. lol. I usually change it about every 4-5K miles.

Hope that helped.

Is that considered negleting it? 4-5k miles? I guess I can change it every engine oil change if needed, I dont drive the car much so that wont kill me anyways. I havent put in any of the tomie grease yet, but my diff came with a can of it. Probably 2 times worth. I guess Ill use it and then Ill try the ford friction stuff on it after I use up that can of tomie. how much of that ford friction modifier do you use? is it just 1 bottle in the diff and then top it off with regualr greese? I wouldnt mind it being quiet if that really works good for you! I was told to run normal greese on the first few fill ups and not to leave it in there long, Im just hoping that it wasnt a bad idea, like is it bad on the clutches? I have heard of people using it alll the time, just the cheap stuff but with the price of the diff, I dont want to skimp out.

How big of a bottle does that ford stuff come in and what ratios do you use in your diff? Or do you say mix 1 bottle with 1 gal of diff grease? How much does a bottle of that stuff run? I have a ford dealer in town so that would be real easy!

It'll be 95% of the time a DD.

That other 5% will be drifting or track.

I'm just wondering if it's not simply worth the extra cash to go with a brand new $800 KAAZ LSD over a used $300 S15 HLSD.

Not an option, this is mostly a DD in dry weather. Comfort comes into play a little bit and having one wheel hop and drag everywhere isn't exactly ideal.

Here are 2 awesome vids of me spinning out. This is with a vlsd that was in great working shape when I got it but it really went bad fast and you can see the sparatic operation of it pretty easy in the vids. It makes for a very unpredictable lsd and makes spinning out easy if only 1 wheel is spinning and all of a sudden the outside wheel decides to have some fun too.

just weld your diff. i DD mine in snow and rain.

i couldnt even last a month with my welded diff
1. I made U-turns like a truck
2. tires started getting bald quicker than usual
3. peel out in parking lots just turning into/out of parking spot
4. accidentally step too hard goin into onramps in the rain and u'll go sideways quick!!

other than that i think if u weld ur diff and plan to just drift at the track its great!! i ended up getting a vsld from a '95 j30, i think it was well worth it for the cost and how its gets the job done :bigok:
