The piping doesnt' matter to some people, to some it does. The steel tube is supposed to help cool your air a degree or so before it reaches the intake manifolds. A lot of people use the Injen set-up, probably because it has an adaptable cold-air-extention (CAE) rather than AEM. AEM also makes them for our cars, but no CAE is available.
K&N has filters only, I believe, no piping. Someone correct me, I may be wrong.
I'm also gonna put this in tech talk <img src="http://www.zilvia.net/f/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'>.

EVERY one will agree, get INJEN. I think the only reason nobody get's K&N is because it does'nt have the shinny tubes all it is, is a cone and a short tube. Just get the Injen there is no other choice.

Ram-air adapter comes standard. It doesn't hook up to your stock filter box.

K&N does have a full intake system for the S13's with a heatshield. I wish they made one for the S14's as well

injen has an optional heat shield, but i don't c much use for it if the filter ain't right next to all that engine heat. nebody think it's still worth it w/ the CAE?
I just got an injen intake with the cold air extension and it's awesome. It sounds great.
