I bought my 97 SE in March and a few months ago I began to notice weird behavior with the steering wheel. Whenever I made a right turn, the steering wheel would center itself at a right tilt, and likewise when I made a left turn. I had an alignment done, but of course that didn't solve the problem.
A very well known and respected mechanic at the local NTB drove my car and put it up on the lift, and said it was probably the rubber bushings. So I replaced these rubber bushings. The problem improved but has not gone away.
When I took the car back to this mechanic, he was surprised that the rubber bushings were not the problem, and he thinks the only remaining thing could be the steering rack is bad (since it moves from side to side when the wheel is turned). Has anyone had this sort of problem? I'm surprised that such a new car (1997) would have a faulty steering rack, and the only warranty coverage left is the powertrain warranty so I guess I'm screwed.
Any other ideas?
