Ok, so my car is a 1993 240sx. KA24DE with auto trans. when i drive it has a hard time shifting usually. but just recently it has been shifting unusually smooth and seem like it is slipping or something. it gives a whining noise. I tried searching the forums and read all kinds of opposing opinions on that noise.

it whines at idle, and gets louder as the revs go up.... but anyways, it will shift into 2nd, and as i accelerate it starts to rev faster without much speed increase, then a very slow/soft shift into 3rd, which does the same thing. the revs go up really fast with minimal increase in speed.

it still gets up to speed on the freeway, but seems like the trans is not grabbing or something....

any ideas, or needs more explanation....

thanks in advance,
jarredd

Mine went out on me december before last...if it's slipping your fluid might smell like its burning or so. If your not familiar with the smell, after driving your car for a while, take to a shop you trust and ask if the fluid on the dipstick for your trans smells like its burning. I actually lost my 3rd gear somehow, but shop that I had rebuild it, one of the mechanics said fluid smells like it was burning...cause basically I had to drive around with no 3rd which put alot of strain on the trans. Also any check engine lights..I actually threw a code for gear signal.

Last, whens the last time you had trans flush and filter change?

^ yeah, once you have done your 5 lug conversion you no longer need a transmission. :keke:

OP check the fluid level on a flat surface after driving for 20 minutes. Make sure its correct;

Then add 1 bottle of lubegard platinum, OR 1/2 bottle of lubegard black

It sounds like you need to change the oil and filter.

I installed an external oil cooler, it was $49.99. That with the lubegard made a big difference.

I then got a circuit sports Magnetic drain plug to absorb any shavings.

Now all I need is an inline external transmission filter to catch the smaller stuff.

5 lug conversion and transmission are linked? lemme go under my car to recheck somethin interesting. LOL

anyway, try lucas anti slip fluid to your transmission. It helped mine...for now.

Lucas isnt and never will be OEM approved.

Lubegard is the only thing tested and proved to work, without causing perminant fatal damage to the transmission when used correctly. The same can NOT be said for lucas. This is why OEM's use it.

thanks for all the advice guys... I will post a want add for an auto transmission... try the lubegard and see what happens... i got a quote from a shop saying that they could rebuild for around $1300... does that sound at all reasonable?

Isn't it just the torque converter that needs to be changed? Thats my guess. I hope you get things worked out. And yeah, people are getting rid of auto trannys all the time for cheap here on Zilvia.

dude, i wouldnt pay $13 for an auto trans let alone $1300. and to answer your question, you can get another one in good condition for like $50 from people who do "5 lug conversion". i wouldnt even bother repairing it if i were you.

You do know a simple flush, filter and fluid change with lubegard platinum most likely will fix your issue

Not if it's whining.

Lubeguard does not cause bearings to grow smooth again once they are galled and it surely won't restore the planet gears proper play as I see in about 80% of failed RE4R01a transmissions.

5 speed is the way to go unless your drive to work requires 4,000 pushes on the clutch pedal..........as in the beltway in DC or I-4 in orlando.

WTF does changing your 4 lug to 5 lug wheel assemblies have to do with the tranny ?:ghey:

^ murda c typed lug instead of trans in his initital response. I cracked a jack joke on it and then others soon followed.

There was some guy that deals with automatic import transmissions for performance, and he recommended lubeguard. Some dsm forum he use to post on, and people would always ask him questions concerning their automatics.

But yeah try flush b4 rebuild..thats what I did. Didn't help, but everyones car and situations aren't the same..as far as rebuild price...yeah that price is in the ball park of what I was quoted from various shops.

i am hoping to source an auto from the forum here for cheap and swap it out... eventually do a 5spd conversion when i have more time and can set up a space to do it.

for now, my car is out of commission. I will post what the problem is once a diagnose it just so everyone can be aware of what happened (for the sake of answering questions for people with the same/similar problems)

It should be pretty easy to find a Automatic trans in Cali. I know of a few auto's around here. If i see one for sale cheap i usually tend to pick it up or keep note of who has it incase mine goes out.
